From the Director Lately we’ve been telling you a great deal about the new integrated system software for our catalog, circulation system, and back-room functions. Like all large computer-based changes, this transition is not without bumps and bruises, but we’re confident that it’s worthwhile. You will have more flexibility in customizing and streamlining your library use. Access to our digital resources will be more convenient. You will be able to choose the library location where you pick up your reserved books. Many additional service enhancements will appear in the coming months. This is made possible by the cooperative commitment of all 77 libraries in the SWAN consortium. The System Wide Automated Network serves over one million registered library users. We offer a combined collection of more than eight million books, magazines, movies, CDs, and other items, throughout the western and southern suburbs. SWAN is one of the largest, busiest, and most effective such enterprises to be found anywhere. Materials, data, and customers move seamlessly throughout the SWAN system, resulting in more powerful and more effective library service than any community would be able to provide on its own. It works because each library treats its neighbors like its family. Your DGPL card makes you a local citizen, wherever you go in SWAN territory. None of this is new. Libraries in the Chicago suburbs began serious cooperative efforts more than 40 years ago, removing barriers and building connections. The result is a robust, responsive library system that makes life better for all. If you haven’t used our services lately, be sure to visit us at 1050 Curtiss Street or www.dglibrary.org. Rick Ashton [email protected] Senior Spelling Bee Test your spelling skills! Adults age 50+ are invited to compete for $25 gift certificates on Saturday, May 9 at 9:30 a.m. at Oak Trace Senior Living, 200 Village Drive. Breakfast will be provided by Oak Trace. Our youngest book lovers (babies, toddlers, and preschoolers) can win by listening to stories as members of our Read-to-Me Club. All others can sign up at the Kids Room Desk beginning May 17. Entering grades 7 – 12? Read three books, magazines, or graphic novels of your choice to win (hint: your required high school summer reading book is one). Attending programs also counts on your entry form. Prizes include candy, Tivoli tickets, and Cocomero gift card raffles so get reading and bring your forms to the Ask Us Desk. Read three books and win a Tivoli ticket—it’s that easy! For every three additional books you submit to the Ask Us Desk, you’ll get another shot at Downtown Downers Grove gift certificates, raffled weekly beginning June 8. Save the Date!
