Let trailing plants roam interior landscape

plants are versatile, can be
manipulated to perform a
myriad of tasks, and sport
attractive foliage — and sometimes bloom.
One of the most common trailing plants is the ivy. This
venerable house plant has been used by indoor gardeners for
years to beautify their surroundings.
The most common ivy grown as a house plant is English
ivy and there are numerous cultivars to choose from, many
of them having colourful variegated foliage and small leaves
produced on long trailing stems.
As with most ivies, the distance between the leaves on the
stems will depend on light levels.
If the plant is receiving some direct sun, the leaves will be
close together and the plant will be quite bushy; the leaves of
a plant exposed to less light will be spaced further apart. Any
variegation will gradually disappear under low light conditions;
the stronger the light, the more variegation the leaves will
have.
Swedish ivy, which is a member of the Plectranthus plant
family, has round scalloped leaves in various shades of green
and many have white variegation. Members of this plant
family like bright indirect light and are often grown as hanging
plants.
Besides the well-known Swedish Ivy, other members of the
Plectranthus plant family are useful trailing plants. Some of
them are rather brittle so they have to be located where they
will not be bumped or brushed against.
Most philodendrons are vines that trail or climb. One of
my favourites is the heart-leaf philodendron whose leaves, as
the name implies, are shaped like hearts.
The so-called split-leaf philodendrons are much larger plants
and are often grown as upright plants although there are
cultivars that have a more trailing habit.
No discussion of trailing plants would be complete without
mention of pothos, a wonderful low light plant that often has
marvellous white or gold marbling on its bright green leaves.
It is a fast growing, vigorous trailing plant whose leaves are
spaced widely apart on thick trailing stems.
Grape ivies are popular because of the soft texture of their
dark green foliage — one has leaves shaped like oak leaves.
Other trailing plants include tradescantia, and various ferns,
including the cascading asparagus fern.
With such a large number of trailing plants to choose from,
it is no wonder that they serve a variety of functions in the
interior landscape.
Here are some ways that trailing plants can be used in the
interior landscape:
• Place a couple of pots of pothos or heart-leaf philodendron
on top of the kitchen cabinets and let them ramble, allowing
some leaves to cascade over the edge. Add a few decorative
objects to the display and allow the vines to wind among them.
• Place a grape ivy or Swedish ivy into an attractive container
and let its foliage tumble over the edge of a mantle or high
shelf.
• Place an attractively variegated English ivy into a unique
container — perhaps a bright, shiny copper bowl — and place
it on a side table and let it ramble over the table top.
• Use trailing plants as ground covers in some of your large
foliage plants such as schefflera and palms. The trailing can
spill over the edges of the container and create a cascading
effect.
• Train a pothos, philodendron or ivy onto a tall pole or
trellis; either set it on the floor or on a shelf. The larger the
container, the larger the plant will grow.
• Use trailing plants as hanging plants; use attractive
containers and interesting plant hangers.
• Add trailing plants to plant groupings and have the trailing
plants wind their way among the foliage of the other plants.
• Espalier a trailing vine, such as ivy, onto a part wall or
room divider, or around a piano window.

‘Small town throw down’ coming to your town
Canadian Wrestling’s Elite is anxiously getting ready to celebrate
six years of operations with the sixth anniversary “Small Town
Throw Down Tour” that will see six blockbuster events in
Saskatchewan and Manitoba over six days — including three in
Westman.
The tour will kick off with CWE’s first event in Saskatchewan
in almost four years when CWE returns to Yorkton on Tuesday,
Jan. 13 and then we cross back over to our home province with
events in Virden, Souris, Winnipeg, Gladstone, and Morden the
days following.
This historic tour is headlined by former World Champion and
WWE/WCW/TNA alumni “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner.
One of the biggest active icons in professional wrestling today will
join the stars of CWE on the road, giving residents of small town
Central Canada a very rare opportunity to meet a true wrestling
celebrity live and in person.
Rejoining the CWE crew is Ring Of Honour superstar “The
Zombie Princess” Jimmy Jacobs who will be on hand for all six
events, including challenging for the CWE Championship in
Winnipeg on Jan. 16. CWE is also pleased to announce that, due
to popular demand, this tour will also host women’s wrestlers and
wrestling throughout the tour when Winnipeg native Kat Von
Heez returns home to join the tour.
There will be three women on the tour, including the highly
decorated Spike TV/Impact Wrestling star ODB who is a fourtime TNA Knockout Champion. Also joining them is British
Columbia star and one of half a twin sister duo, Violet.
The CWE Champion “Hotshot” Danny Duggan will be on
hand throughout the tour as well as New Japan Pro Wrestling’s
newest star “The Crown Jewel” Chase Owens, top stars from
across the U.S. and Western Canada and, of course, the top stars
of Canadian Wrestling’s Elite.

Drip on leather – sour; honey better than sugar – sweet!

I own a beautiful black
leather chair that I somehow
got a drop of nail polish or
superglue on. I am not sure
which it is. Do you have a
solution in your magic bag that
will work on either? Terrie
Dear Terrie,
Although
superglue
instantly bonds to surfaces, it
has one weakness — acetone.
On a variety of surfaces,
both superglue and nail
polish can be removed using
an old toothbrush soaked
with acetone. Acetone is the
key ingredient in many nail
polishes, and may be
purchased on its own at
hardware stores.
The bad news is that acetone
will discolour fabrics, and dyed
leather is a perfect candidate
for discolouration.
Another option is to place
ice onto the area and freeze the
glue. Chip off glue and lightly
sand, being careful not
to damage the leather.
Or heat the area using a hair
dryer, as the spot softens, peel
off mess. Rather than trying to
remove the glue or nail polish,
it might be safer to cover up
the area with a permanent
marker or leather touchup
paint.

Do not wash berries until
ready to use. Using a large
baking sheet, wet a tea towel
and lay it on the sheet. Spread
berries onto the baking sheet
so that they do not touch each
other. Wet another tea towel
and cover the berries before
putting the pan inside the
fridge. Berries will be beautiful,
even after five days.

one step further by soaking the
strawberries in vinegar and
water before laying them onto

Avoid cracking eggs on the
counter edge or bowl rims and
instead get cracking directly on
the flat counter surface. You
will find that as the egg cracks
the shells will not sneak their
way into your bowl.

I would like to share
something I discovered while
making salsa. Every time I
made salsa, it was runny and
I wanted a thicker consistency.
To overcome this, I discovered
a solution: After the salsa has
boiled for a while, I ladle off
as much liquid as I can. It
becomes so that I only need to
add one can of tomato paste
to the salsa. The liquid that I
have taken off I boil a little
longer in a separate pot and
the softener compartment with

end loader washer machine
(between uses) with the door
open between laundry days, it
alleviates the musty smell. I

many cavities as table sugar
because it melts into a liquid
very quickly and does not
adhere to teeth. Table sugar
contains no nutrients.

HOSPITAL AUXILIARY HELPS FUND PAIN MANAGEMENT
One in five Canadians lives with chronic pain daily. The Brandon Pain Management Clinic, which began seeing clients in May 2014,
is able to offer state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment for people living with pain. Thanks to another generous donation from the
Brandon Regional Health Centre Auxiliary, a radiofrequency ablation machine and interventional pain procedure treatment bed has
been purchased. These new pieces of equipment greatly assist in providing enhanced pain care. The donation for the two pieces of

If it’s cold out keep those pets inside
I suppose no matter how
hard you wish it away; the
cold weather is bound to
come sooner or later. It looks
like this New Year will be no
exception.
As temperatures drop, we
find ways to shield ourselves
from the cold and we bundle
up with a little extra padding
to keep warm. Our fourlegged friends are born
wearing a coat, and those
that live outdoors develop a
thicker natural coat as the
weather grows colder.
Animals that live outdoors
wear more than extra layers
of fur. They keep warm by
adding layers of fat that acts
as additional insulation from
the cold and this fat also
provides them energy and
fuel for the winter.
But on the coldest nights,
when there is a sharp bite in
the air, most outdoor animals
seek shelter to keep warm.
Mother Nature may have
designed some animals to
withstand
very
cold
temperatures, but at the end
of the day, most animals
keep warmest by finding a
place that is sheltered from
the wind and insulated from
the cold where they can cozy
up.
From hollow logs and
fallen trees, to caves and
carefully placed burrows —
wildlife can be quite
innovative when it comes to
finding places to keep warm.
In urban areas, there are so
many more options and most

human dwellings offer spaces
in garages, under porches and
under parked vehicles.
A vehicle that has been
recently used can be
particularly attractive to
animals in the cold — as a
warm engine provides heat
and for a small animal, like
a cat, the space under the
hood is warm, easy to access
and sheltered from the cold.
Parked vehicles provide a
little shelter and warmth to
cats that are left to roam the
city streets in the winter, but
they often don’t stay parked
for long. In many cases, the
very next day that vehicle is
going to start up and the turn
of a key changes the safe
house into a potential death
trap.
There are many cases
where cats sleeping under the
hood of a car are caught in a
fan belt, or tangled up in the
moving parts around the
engine. A cat sleeping in the
wrong space has only a few
seconds to move before it’s
too late to get free.
Cats that do survive
through strategic placement
under the hood may escape
from the running vehicle. But
when they hear the engine
roar, many cats hunker
down, hold on — and end up
going along for a ride.
Depending on the driver’s
plans, it could mean a drive
five minutes from home or a
trip to a completely different
town.
There are cats that survive

soot and some burnt
whiskers. But there are cats
