The Church needs to walk with its people. For most of us, the death of a loved one is the most trying of times, when the support of our faith and others is needed. To this end, another group, called “New Hope,” has formed. It is a self-healing group for those who have lost a loved one through death. Those who have participated in this group have one more session to go. It meets on Mondays in the Parish House. We are blessed to have large numbers of people involved in the liturgical life of this parish. The number of Altar Servers is the highest it has ever been, and we have a strong complement of Readers, Eucharistic Ministers, and ushers. A convening of all involved in the liturgical ministries of the Church is scheduled for the near future. A wonderful development is the number of high school students who feel comfortable and committed enough to continue to serve in this capacity. Do you know why our priests look so neat when they come out to celebrate Mass in the morning? It is because our three sacristans not only make sure everything is in its proper place but make sure we don’t come out looking like unmade beds. If one person has mentioned how nice the outside of our Church looks for this Christmas season, one hundred have. The wreaths and white lights are tasteful and elegant, and the white manger set reminds all of the reason for the season. It isn’t your ears or your hearing. The organ is sounding better because according to the man who looked at it, it is the first time it has been repaired since it was installed. About eight hours of repairs went into getting this fine instrument up to snuff. More on this later. On the practical side, we now have four groups of money tabulators who assist with the Sunday collections. We also have a number of women who make it a point to assist with helping out in the Parish House. They are a great help in keeping this home for our priests functioning and organized. A number of people have commented on the openness of the Parish House, where people feel at home and can often be found having a cup of coffee or tea in either the kitchen or dining room. This is an intentional effort on our part to allow the people of the parish to feel as though the Parish House is their house. It is encouraging to note the number of new parishioners we have at St. James. We are averaging at least a dozen new parishioners per month. Along with our present congregation, our new parishioners give us great hope for the future. Every pastor worth his salt realizes the importance of good advice. Priests, like everyone else are limited in their experience and skills. To this end, we have a Parish Council, a Pastor’s Advisory Board, a Finance Committee and, of course, our two Trustees. All of these people bring insight, experience, and expertise to our collaborative discussions and assist in making the best decisions for the parish. The amount of time the above people give is a testimony to their goodness and love of St. James. Likewise, the amount of out-reach the people in this parish extend to those who are going through difficult times is nothing less than astounding and even miraculous. Gifts large and small, for children and adults, those in institutions and living on their own were endless. If all the gifts received were placed in Church, the center and side aisles would have been full. Clothing, toiletries, and foods being received were non-stop and were testimony to the belief that Jesus is found in the poor which rests in the hearts of our people. The first of the last three articles focused on ownership, that people of two or three generations ago had for their ethnic parishes, and how those parishes thrived. The Church in general, as well as our parish in particular, has evolved over these last decades. St. James had a strong foundation which was laid by a few who are still with us and by many who have worked hard to make this parish the fine one it is. Like them, we are called to do our part to ensure that St. James is the vibrant Body of Christ it is (Column continues on next page) (Column continues) called by Jesus to be. Ownership is the key. If each of us accepts the challenge to do what we can, spiritually and materially, we can come to realize that this parish will be as good as we allow it to be. Jesus will be present and our lives will witness to His love through our faith and actions. FRANCIS OF ASSISI SCHOOL NEWS / WEEKEND OF JANUARY 10 / 11, 2015 “A blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you. Deuteronomy Happy New Year! Entering the New Year marks the mid-point of the academic year. Education is a privilege that we are given and the next couple of months will be extremely busy for everyone. Before leaving for Christmas break the eighth grade students enjoyed the culture and art of New York City. They visited the magnificent Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and attended the highly-acclaimed production of The Nutcracker. By taking time from their normal routine the students grew a deeper and genuine love for each other, becoming more like family. This is an exciting time of year for 8th-graders who took the COOP exam. The Catholic High School Cooperative Entrance Exam is a test taken by eighth graders for admission to a Catholic High School. As they are waiting for their letters of acceptance, the students need our prayers to prepare for the next step in their education: the challenge and support they will find in Catholic high schools. What an exciting year to be studying American History, from exploration to present day, we are making history! Mr. Fatovic, (Mrs. Shire’s brother) spent the day at the Academy with the middle school students reenacting the Battle of Monmouth, during the Revolutionary War. The students were reminded of the importance of learning from history in the pursuit of peace and justice in our community and the world. Peace and all good things!
