We have been hearing a lot of confessions here at St. James. To be honest, it is my favorite sacramental priestly activity. While I like saying Mass very much, I love hearing confessions. It is such a shame when people make a mistake and then do not take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It is akin to punishing yourself twice: once for sinning and once for not going to confession. We all need to be loved and to be reminded that no one loves us more than God. As a mother or father loves a child, God loves us even more. While it may be hard to believe that, it is true. For some of us, it is hard to believe that anyone could love us, and while it might be hard for some people to love us, it is never difficult for God. That is why He is God. We have heard the confessions of all of the students from the Academy of St. Francis as well as two groups of children who are preparing for the reception of First Holy Communion. Confessions of students in our high school program will take place this week. After these many years of hearing confessions, I honestly thought I had heard it all. Recently, one of the young ones confessed to “hiding the broccoli.” Prudence told me not to ask where the broccoli was hidden. In my younger years, you would have seen me celebrating Mass on St. Patrick’s Day in the Cathedral of St. Patrick, treated to soda bread and tea in the Cardinal’s residence after the Mass, and then on to the steps to watch the thousands of marchers who walked up 5th Avenue, with bagpipers and snare drums accompanying them. Now, a glance on the television is about all I get to do. Does anyone remember Jack McCarthy who used to serve as a television commentator of the parade for a score of years or more? For the rest of the year, he was Captain Jack on a cartoon show on Channel 11 which featured Popeye and his friends every late afternoon, right before dinner was eaten. If memory serves correctly, we had channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13. Of course, it was all in black-and-white, with rabbit ears on the television, and we were quite content with the simplicity of it all. The teachers in our sacramental preparation for both First Confession and First Communion are Kathy D'Antonio, Diane Capone, Regina Casini, Ruth Lacera Pillsbury, and Alyse Berardi. We thank them for their commitment and unselfish help. They are good people and are helping our young people become good young adults. This past Sunday, we installed the following into the ministries of Eucharistic Minister and/ or Lector: Matthew Amador, Rosemarie Brino, Noemi Santiago-Corrado, Trisha DiDio, Neil DiDio, Jasmin Figueroa, Michael Greco, and Leila Stephan. It is nice to see people involved in the liturgy and actively participating in the ministries offered to them. The lecture, offered on the 24th of March, is entitled, “Be Happy.” It is full, and we thank those who have signed up for it. A blend of Sacred Scripture, cognitive psychology, and philosophy will be presented, and, hopefully, those who attend will be happier after the lecture than before they entered the room. The covered crucifix and statues in our Church indicate, through this symbolic gesture, that Lent is here and almost over. Hopefully, it has been a positive journey for most of us. Our Church and traditions are rich in symbols which help us focus on this penitential season, and we are grateful for them. We are grateful to Jim Aulino for his maneuvering through the crawl space over our sacristy in the effort to make sure the wiring for our sound system works. We thank Michael Agures who is always there to help, and John Waryas for his assistance in keeping this campus moving in the right direction. Our stomachs are grateful to Josephine Fitzpatrick and Rosemarie Picarelli for the delicious stew they sent over. We thank Giovanna Paniscotti for the delicious apple cake she sent over on St. Patrick’s Day and Noreen Colluccio for the loaves of Irish Soda bread which was gobbled-up rather quickly. If you have not yet gone to confession, dig deep, if you have to, for the motivation needed to go. We all need confession. It is good for the soul and for our peace of mind as well. FRANCIS OF ASSISI School News for March 21/22, 2015 Our Preschoolers are getting ready for Easter! This mouth our Religion program focused on prayer. We talked about the times of day we can pray, praying together with our family and praying together at church. We also talked about all the good things we could do during Lent, especially being kind to everyone. This month we are learning about the Five Food Groups and ways we can stay healthy. We are also learning about different types of seeds and are growing plants in our classroom. We went on a nature walk to see the different types of plants growing around our school! We can‛t wait for all of our plants to start growing!
