500 Main Street, Metuchen, NJ 08840 CONTACT: Nancy Goldberg (732)632-8502/ [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NJ SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA QUINTET TO PERFORM CHILDREN’S CLASSIC IN METUCHEN The Metuchen Arts Council, in cooperation with St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, will present Sergie Prokofiev’s beautiful rendering of the classic tale Peter and the Wolf, performed by members of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in a family concert on Sunday, February 1st at 4:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church in Metuchen. In 1936, commissioned to write a symphony for children, the Russian composer Sergie Prokoviev adapted the story of Peter, a self-described young pioneer, and his encounters with a hapless wolf. The composer assigned each character its own instrument and melody. This chamber music concert, arranged for woodwinds quintet by Robert Wagner, features the instruments of the woodwind family combining the imagery with a focus on the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn. Children and adults alike will love following the story as it is told through the music, aided by a colorful narration that will be read by the Rev. Barbara Crafton. The program will also feature an “Instrument Petting Zoo” to introduce the children in the audience to the different instruments used in the performance. The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, under the musical direction of Jacques Lacombe, is comprised of some the country’s finest musicians. Artistic excellence, innovative programming and community engagement are hallmarks of its mission. The Metuchen Arts Council is grateful to the NJSO and its funders for making this concert available to the Metuchen community. The concert starts at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 1st. St. Luke’s Church is located on the corner of Oak and Middlesex Avenues in Metuchen. Admission is $10. Children 12 and under are free. 1 Seating is limited.
