Meg’s Gifts Providing Personal Gifts for Special Occasions Article by Debbie Faircloth Photography by Bert VanderVeen 16 GUILFORD WOMAN | DECEMBER 2011 E ver since she was a small child, Tami Hendrix has sought out ways to give back to others. This innate part of her being has not only led her to develop a lifelong central core of caring, but has influenced her in her career choices and her business and personal life even today. A former teacher and veteran of the home furnishings industry, Tami opened Meg’s Gifts just over three years ago, filling a need in the Piedmont Triad for providing personalized gifts as well as ways for others to show their thoughtfulness, gratitude, love, and friendship for the special people in their lives. “Meg’s is about giving,” according to Tami, “and this store is a natural extension of my philosophy of life.” Meg’s (which actually is an acronym for the store’s specialties of monogramming, engraving, and gifts) provides popular gifts for the current trend of personalization. Though monogrammed and engraved items have long been staples of Southern homes, Meg’s website has created a national base of customers for these unique and special items. “We live in a society where we are inundated with internet messages, social media, and visual overstimulation. Meg’s encourages our customers to slow down, select a gift that will be special for you or a loved one, and thus create a lasting memory. “We provide a platform for giving, an intimate shopping experience, and pride in personalization. There is value in taking the time to select a personal gift for others and not relying on a cookie-cutter approach to gifting. Our goal is to develop a neighborhood feel throughout all we do.” Meg’s offers gifts that are affordable and accessible, ranging from $10 to $50. A rotating sale section also allows customers to pick up great gifts at bargain prices. The vast selection includes sorority gifts, scarves, book bags, wine totes, coolers, beach towels, bath wraps, baby gifts, acrylic and jewelry items for engraving, collegiate items from areas schools, Tervis Tumblers, tennis totes, garment bags, insulated lunch totes, men’s gifts, and diaper bags. Customers can also bring in gifts purchased elsewhere for personalization. At Meg’s, presentation is as important as the gift itself. Meg’s prides itself on providing stunning wrapping presentations that can make a less expensive gift look like a showpiece. Such celebrations as weddings, birthdays, holidays, retirements, graduations, and baby showers can also benefit from Meg’s special touch. Representing a variety of vendors, the staff can help you select your special remembrance while keeping within your budget. “In a struggling economy, people are seeking value for their money. Meg’s Gifts helps customers select practical gifts that let them reflect and honor the giver as well as the recipient.” In keeping with Tami’s philosophy of giving back to the community, she has established an umbrella charitable foundation. The GIFT 2012 Trends for Holiday Gifts • Personalized ornaments—Meg’s can create a one-of-a-kind remembrance by hand-personalizing an ornament with a name or date. Additionally, Meg’s offers collegiate ornaments for that avid Tarheel, Wolfpack, Mountaineer, or Deacon fan. • Monogrammed scarves—Pashminas, cashmere-feel scarves, in solids and patterns, to keep you warm through Winter and into early Spring. • Celebrate “The South” plaques, defining this special part of the country—ideals for the native southerner, or the Yankee transplant. • North Carolina glasses and dishtowels, a perfect way to show pride in living in or visiting this beautiful state. • Personalized ceramic gifts, frames, mugs, towels, aprons and trays—bring your creative ideas, let Meg’s do the rest! GUILFORD WOMAN | DECEMBER 2011 17 GIFT Foundation Giving It Forward Today is an umbrella foundation that facilitates and supports causes that give forward to people and animals in need. This includes: • Meg’s Community Garden—an initiative that encourages people to donate their excess produce from their vegetable gardens. Last year, Meg’s Gifts more than 100 bushels of produce to area churches and shelters, including Open Door Ministries, who feed more than 400 hungry and homeless each day. • Humane Society’s Fill the Food Bowl—a program that collects dry and canned food for people who cannot afford to purchase these animal necessities for their pets. • Ava’s Elephants—an effort to help babies with craniosynostosis, a condition in which a child’s skull sutures fuse much earlier than they should. This condition prevents the child’s head, brain, and skull from growing properly, leading to pressure on the brain and possibly resulting in developmental problems. Meg’s offers personalized elephants for these patients in order to provide comfort and encouragement as they brave through multiple surgeries and recoveries. • Meg’s Gifts for Kids--a relatively new partnership with Family Services of the Piedmont (High Point division) that offers personalized pillowcases and Christmas stockings to children needing a sense of comfort and security. (Give It Forward Today) Foundation, that facilitates and supports causes that give forward to people and animals in need in an effort to raise awareness and help the community.
