Happy New Year!
What a strange thing to write – not the actual words, but when I write them, December
11th, and I am already planning what is happening in the New Year and have not even
celebrated Christmas yet. Early this week I printed off the Group Diary for 2015, and
somehow seeing the whole year planned out is quite scary.
I wonder if this is in some way an indication about how many people live their lives?
and by that I mean that they do not live in the present, they have no time to enjoy the
moment, and are always instead looking at the next thing that has to be done?
As Christians we, I think, should be doing both, and doing both well. We have to live in
the moment in order to deal with current issues, to pray for the world and those around
us who need our prayers, to allow time for God to speak to us in our daily lives, and to
do all that we need to stop daily and pray, take time out of the world and spend that
time with the Risen Christ. BUT how many of us actually do that?
I know that on quite a few occasions I have to miss the morning office at Church as I
have to be an early meeting in Truro, and so I often pray in the car on the way to the
meeting – I pray about the decisions that need to be made, and ask for Gods guidance –
but it is not the same as taking actual time out to sit with God, to listen to his words. I
find that if I miss the morning Office too many times in a week then I become
unfocused, disorientated, sometimes even despondent – mainly, I think, as I need to sit
and be still, to listen to God and to spend time in Gods company.
Once we have listened then we also need to act, and that also means that we as
Disciples of Christ have to also plan for the future, we have to look ahead, we have to
lift our eyes heavenwards to plan for the future. If we do not then the Church will fail.
Why? Well as Bishop Chris said ‘Christianity is a generational religion, and if a
generation fails to pass on the faith then the faith will die.’ So it is our duty to pass on
our faith, and that means planning how we do that, it means getting involved as
Christians in the world around us, and not just in raising money for the building. It
might also mean sacrificing something that we value in order that others might come to
faith – perhaps that is also what we should be looking at as we try to come to terms
with the Diocese increasing the MMF (Mission and Ministry Fund) by 28% this coming
year. The MMF goes some way towards the cost of providing ministry here in
Cornwall, and over the last few years the Diocese have been using its reserves to pay
for the shortfall. The time has now come for us, we, me, to give sacrificially to the
church in order to ensure that the Church is here for future generations.
Margaret and I have decided to increase our giving by more than 28% as we feel very
strongly that we should be leading by our own example. This will not be easy, but living the Gospel in our lives in never easy, and God is so generous to us in our lives that
we should be generous in return by giving back to God what he has given to us in supplying Margaret and I with employment in this ‘Gods County’. We have also decided to
change how we give to the churches. Since arriving Margaret and I have given monthly
to the Group of Churches by paying into the Group account to allow the Group to ask
less of each of the parishes. However, due to the increase being asked of each church
we are now going to split what we give between the churches in the Group to show our
Persecuted Christians in Egypt
support for each Church, and to try and help each PCC to find the extra 28% that is
being asked from them.
I firmly believe that this is NOT an impossible task, and that God will provide for us.
This will mean hard work in fundraising, but it will also mean that each and every one of
us will have to look closely at what we currently give to the church, and if possible to
increase this amount. I know that this will simply not be possible for some people, but I
would ask that you then look at how else you might be able to help. Could you become
active on the PCC? Could you become involved in the Community Lunch? Might you be
able to host a coffee morning to help your church?
If the church is to grow and flourish, and indeed have a revival, then we all have to be
actively involved in the wider life of the church, we have to be involved in community,
we have to accept people for who they are and welcome them in with open arms, not to
ignore them when we see them as we do not agree with what they say or how they act,
we have to listen to the voice of God and then act in his name, letting go of our inhibitions and being filled with the Spirit so that we can truly Discover Gods Kingdom and
Grow the Church.
It seems appropriate here to remind us all of the Stratton Deanery Prayer which does
challenge us to look outwards and asks God to help us in this task.
O generous God,
you invite your people to discover the Kingdom
and grow the church;
give us, then,
the courage,
the strength
and the vision
to share in the mission and ministry
of your Son
that with the Lord of the Church
we may be, truly,
the Church of the Lord.

Christianity came to Egypt early when the Apostle Mark founded a church in Alexandria in
AD 42. This became the Coptic Orthodox Church, Copt being the Greek word for Egyptian. By the 5th Century most Egyptians were Christian. Following the Arab conquest in
641, Islam gradually became the majority, and the tensions between the two have continued
ever since. Today the Christian community is around 10% of the population.
Over the centuries Christians have suffered peaks and troughs of persecution, but since the
1980s this has become more intense and violent. Added to this, tighter and tighter social
and employment controls compound the difficulties of the Christian minority. Women in
particular have suffered greatly at the hands of Muslims. The revolution of 2011 at last
brought hope of equal rights for Christians. Sadly, the opposite came true with the election
of the Muslim Brotherhood under President Morsi and the new constitution of 2012. The
lot of Christians worsened significantly, and even though the regime did not last long, and
the new President El-Sisi promised reforms, compensation, and equality, these have been
very slow to materialise. The ousting of President Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood unleashed an horrific outbreak of violence across the country, with the destruction of 60 plus
church buildings, scores of Christian homes, businesses and schools, few of which have
been rebuilt. Today the position is still fragile, with few reforms, and frequent attacks on
individual Christians. Many have to meet in ruined buildings, and are fearful of violent
attack or kidnapping for ransom or worse if they venture out.
Please Pray for:The restoration of order in Egypt, and that the unjust scapegoating of Christians will stop.
Give thanks for the election of President El-Sisi and pray that the promised reforms will
not only be implemented soon in the next new constitution, but will also be enforced on
the ground.
Pray for all Christians who have lost family, friends, homes or livelihoods in antiChristian
violence, asking God to comfort them in their sorrow and trauma, and to give them a
forgiving spirit.
Give thanks for the faithfulness of our Christian brother s and sister s in Egypt as they
continue to meet and worship in their often ruined churches.
Pray for their continued faith and strength and deter mination to praise and glorify
God,
even in these very difficult circumstances.
Pray for the Egyptian Muslims who car r y out these attacks, that they will repent of
what
they have done, and will come to know Jesus themselves.
Marshgate WI
Ding dong merrily on high, the members of Marshgate WI got a double
whammy when they arrived for their December meeting….not only did
they enjoy a Christmas party with all the trimmings, but also got to explore their brand new village hall, opened only a couple of weeks earlier.
The two dozen ladies, including guests from the area, enjoyed party games,
a sketch, crackers and presents with a good tea and Christmas cake, all
finished off with carols round the organ. The warm surroundings of the new
Otterham & St Juliot Hall, with its underfloor heating and shiny new décor,
made the guests almost reluctant to leave at the end. The competition for
the best wrapped parcel, won by Pauline, meant there was a Secret Santa
gift for all those attending. On wishing everyone a Happy Christmas the
President took the opportunity to thank Brian and Cherry Whitehead for
bringing the musical accompaniment for the carols and for judging the
competition.

Boscastle WI
We have had an interesting variety of speakers in 2014 and our November speaker, Janey
Coomber, was no exception. Janey spoke on ‘Contact the Elderly’, a little known charity,
which organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for people over 75, who have little
social interaction in their lives. One Sunday a month, a team of volunteer hosts and drivers
provide tea in the hosts’ homes and transport for groups of six to eight guests. Each host
entertains once or twice a year. The friendships that develop are enjoyed by the hosts and
drivers as much as they are by the guests. One 91 year old lady is reported to have said ‘It
is nice to meet other people after being alone and indoors for so long’. 2015 will be the 50th
anniversary of the charity. Not bad for an idea that began when a Londoner visited an
elderly neighbour and realised how isolated she was, although living in an urban block of
flats should have brought her into contact with many people. The organisation now has
groups throughout the country.
Four members of Boscastle WI had a pleasant start to December when they received an
invitation to St Gennys’s Christmas Tea Party. It was just as a Christmas party should be,
with plentiful home-baked delicacies (we have all come to expect tasty morsels when the
WI is involved in catering and we were not disappointed); silly party games (proving that
the child in all of us is still alive and kicking) and a surprise gift for all guests at the end of
the afternoon, many thanks to the St Gennys organisers for starting our Christmas
celebrations off with such a fun afternoon.
We substituted our December meeting with a Christmas Tea at Boscastle Farm Shop. It
was a chance to chat and exchange Christmas cards, whilst tucking into the Farm Shop’s
cheese scones, sandwiches and cakes. For some it was also an opportunity to do some
Christmas shopping.
Our January speaker will be Alice Gribble who will, no doubt, demonstrate the Easter
Cookery goodies she proposes to tell us about, so why not come and visit us at the village
hall. We meet every second Tuesday in the village hall at 2 pm. Come and get to know us.
