2014 – 2015 OFFICERS
Grand Knight’s Message
Chaplain
Very Rev. Msgr. Charles Cicerale
Dear Brothers:
It’s hard to believe that I am halfway through my term as the Grand Knight of
Middlesex Council #857. When I started back in July I had no idea what the coming
year would bring but I asked for everyone’s help and support. I had no Idea at that time
what that request would bring, but I knew OUR Knights stick together.
I couldn’t have been more accurate with my prediction. The amount of help and
cooperation I have been given by our members is truly humbling. Whenever something
would come up that I needed help with all I had to do is ask. I was NEVER told no;
perhaps “I’m tied up, but let me see what I can do” or “I can’t, but I’ll call so and so I
think he could help”. I can’t tell you how much that means to me, as I have limited free
time in my personal life.
The officers that serve this council with me have also gone above and beyond!
From our DGK Dan Langon who is also our Columbian Club Treasurer, down to our
Inside and Outside Guards Ray Bober and Ed Kuchie who ran a Kids Halloween party
and Thanksgiving pie sale each officer has done more than just hold a title. Some of
them hold two or more offices, but still are able to do what the office requires. I also
would like to recognize the different committee chairs that carry out all the programs
that the KofC does. Every one of them plays a very special role in our council.
Perhaps the greatest respect I have found is for the “Senior” members & past
officers of the Council. They continually pitch in and help, never having the attitude “the
other members can do it, I’ve been here longer” or “I held the office it’s his
responsibility now”. They help with whatever is needed time and again. What took a
little getting used to is to have a member who has been here 20 or more years calling
me “worthy”. What I’ve come to understand is that it’s not about the person it’s about
the office.
In the last six months, we have had our share of good times and bad. We continue
to hold events and social gatherings that seem to get bigger and bigger all the time.
We are more than a council we are a family and like a family there are times we must
grieve. Sadly we have lost some of our brother Knight’s during this Columbian Year. I
would like us to keep them and their families in our thoughts and prayers in this New
Year.
Finally I would like to close, continuing my promise from my first Grand Knight’s
message. I will continue to do the best I can for our council for the rest of my term.
With your continued help, I hope when the time comes in July I’ll be able to look back
and feel that I am turning the Council over to the next Grand Knight a little better then
when I received it.
Grand Knight

Knight of the Month January 2015
Ed Lenart
Ed has been the Youth Chairman for the council for some time now, and once again
this year is running the Free Throw Championship program for our council held every
January. He also stepped up in a big way when the coolers in the hall failed. Not only
did he find new coolers and arrange for the sale, he then managed the transportation,
installation, and removal of the broken ones. Ed also arranges for our Monday Night
NFL parties in the fall. Congratulations Ed and thanks!!
Wedding Anniversary Certificate
We decided at the officer’s meeting that we would follow the state guidelines for
presentation of the certificates. This will be for anniversaries of 25 years and 5-year
increments thereafter (30, 35, 40, etc) for both state & supreme. If this applies to you

THE COUNCIL COMPASS
Columbian Club Report
Brothers:
We have had a few glitches getting the heat running in the council and hall this
year but it seems that all is running smoothly now. I would just like to remind the
membership that the shut off switches located in the stairwell to the basement and
the one located in the boiler room are designed to be used in an emergency. If the
heat is running needlessly please just turn down the thermostat, DO NOT use the
switches. Thank you
With the cost of electricity constantly being one of our biggest expenses, we
are beginning to switch over from regular light bulbs to dimmable LED lights. The
switch has already begun in the hall and will continue around the premises as long
as we can receive the LED bulbs at a reasonable cost. Led bulbs last longer than
regular bulbs and use less energy both of which would hopefully save the club
funds in the long run!!
We had an unfortunate surprise during the set up for the Christmas Social in
the Club when we found out the Music Channels on the TV had been removed by
Comcast as well as difficulty with one of the boxes. We are working with Comcast
to address the issues and will keep everyone advised.
There are still many unresolved issues that continue to be worked on such as
the Parking Lot, ceiling repairs, weatherproofing, etc. With the holidays past us I
hope to be able to pick up steam and get these issues completed!

Supporting Pregnant Women in Crisis Program / Life Choices Resource Center
Pregnant women are often women in crisis, and it is these crises that often lead to abortion. We can assist
these women by supporting Birthright centers and the other Problem Pregnancy Organizations by our
donations. This includes the Life Choices Resource Center located in Metuchen, NJ that is going to receive
the proceeds of this month’s RTL “Dinner and a Movie” hosted by John Brower. This program basically
asks each Council to make a monetary donation of $200 to one of the local Life-Saving organizations, which
John often exceeds. You can see all the good work they do at http://www.lifechoicesrc.com/

Amber Alerts
Each year hundreds of children are reported missing, presumably abducted. With the trust that a young
child has, many times he or she doesn’t even realize they’re being abducted. This is why we as Knights of
Columbus have to take advantage of the different messaging systems put in place by the National center for
Missing &Exploited Children (NCMEC). Please visit the Amber Alerts section of their website to find out
different ways you can receive Amber Alert Messages at http://www.missingkids.com/AmberSignUp
Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest
Ed Lenart will once again be running the KofC Free Throw Contest this month. This year we were
considering having an additional day for children of the members of the Council in addition to the times that
are held at St. James School. Unfortunately we didn’t receive any replies from council members. Therefore
the program will run as it has in the past. GOOD LUCK to all participants in this year’s contest!!
Bishop Dougherty Scholarships
Do you have a son/daughter who will be entering their freshman year of college next fall? Then they may be
eligible for “The Bishop Dougherty Scholarship Fund” which provides up to four (4) $1,000.00 scholarships
for children, siblings or grandchildren of our fraternal brothers. Applicants must obtain a copy of the
application from the Grand Knight, and the completed application should be returned to him by 3/1/2015.
CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE
The Young Prophet of Pakistan
She is an extraordinary young woman. She came to the world's attention that
horrific day two years ago. She was on the village's rattling old bus, returning home
from school, when gunmen stopped the vehicle, went to her seat, and shot her in
the head and neck. Her crime: passionately believing that women should be able to
go to school.
Sixteen-year-old Malala Yousafzai survived the attack by the Taliban, the Muslim
clerical group that believes in adherence to a strict version of Islamic law. Where it
can, the Taliban has imposed rules forbidding girls from going to school, listening to
music or taking most jobs. After a year of intense medical care and rehabilitation,
Malala became an even more vocal and effective advocate for the rights of children
in her native Pakistan and around the world. Last month her courageous witness
was recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize.
In an interview on The Daily Show with John Stewart a few days before the
award was announced, Malala was asked what she would do if attacked again by a
Taliban gunman. She responded: "I would tell him how important education is and
that I would even want education for your children as well. That's what I want to tell
you, now do what you want. "If you hit a Talib, then there would be no difference
between you and the Talib," she continued. "You must not treat others with cruelty.
You must fight others through peace and through dialogue and through education."
Malala has put aside her own fears and has taken on whatever the
consequences to speak a "prophesy" of hope in the midst of fear, of peace in
response to turmoil, of justice in face of demagoguery. To be a prophet of
God's justice begins with embracing God's vision of what the world can and
should become and then giving ones self totally to the work of realizing that
vision. In baptism, each one of us has been called by God to the work of the
"prophet," using whatever talents and skills we possess to transform the
wastelands around us into harvests of justice and forgiveness, to create
highways for our God to enter and re-create our world in his compassion and
peace.
