A Note From the Artistic Director
We constantly try to track the pedigree
of our art. What past playwrights
influenced the current crop? How did
Waiting for Godot change theatre? Many of
these questions will be debated forever but
there is one thing we can say with absolute
certainty — the Pulitzer-prize winning play
Clybourne Park doesn’t exist without A
Raisin in the Sun; they’re married together.
Clybourne was written as a response to
Raisin and while both plays are complete

and satisfying works in their own right,

like any good marriage, they are even
stronger together. Also like many great couples, they may have been
born to be together, but the actual pairing required a touch of luck.
I saw Clybourne Park in New York and immediately called the
playwright Bruce Norris to begin discussions about bringing it
to the Taper. A few weeks later I went out to see Ebony Repertory
Theatre’s production of A Raisin in the Sun. I knew it was a terrific
play and I’d heard great things about this production, so I went
into the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center prepared for a great
night in the theatre. Those expectations were clearly exceeded.
It was in the middle of the first act that a light bulb went off.
A Raisin in the Sun opened a conversation about race that we are
still struggling with 50 years later. Clybourne Park continues that
conversation, adding context and then bringing it into the present
day. I spoke to Ebony Rep’s Founder/Producer Wren T. Brown at
intermission and said I wanted CTG audiences to see this production.
A Raisin in the Sun and Clybourne Park are powerful works on their
own but the chance to see them together is an opportunity that
I couldn’t pass up. I hope you will feel the same way.

Kenya won a full
tuition scholarship to
the Carnegie Mellon
School of Drama. In
Kenya’s senior year
she accepted an elite
invitation to attend a semester abroad at
Europe’s premiere theatre school, MXAT
(Moscow Art Theatre School). During the
course, Kenya received intensive discipline
in Russian language, ballet, singing, scene
study and Droznin, the incomprehensible
ability to leap over furniture and run up
walls! With these tools, Kenya is blessed
to be chasing her dreams in the City of
Angels. I want to thank God and my family

discrimination led to her father winning an
anti-desegregation case before the Illinois
Supreme Court. A Raisin in the Sun was
loosely based on these events. When it
opened in 1959, it was the first drama by a
black woman to be produced on Broadway.
It also won the New York Drama Critics’
Circle Award as the best play of the year.
Hansberry portrayed individuals — not only
black — who defend their own and other’s
dignity. “All art is ultimately social: that which
agitates and that which prepares the mind for
slumber,” she once said. Lorraine Hansberry
died of pancreatic cancer on January 12, 1965.
Her premature death, at the age of 34, cut
short her promising career.

RUTH E. CARTER (Costume Designer) has
over 25 years experience as a costume
designer for film, television, commercials and
theatre. Beginning her career at the Santa
Fe Opera and then moving to L.A., she is a
two-time Academy Award nominee for Spike
Lee’s Malcolm X and Steven Spielberg’s
Amistad. Ruth is a long-time collaborator with

Spike Lee; she has designed 11 of his feature
films and numerous commercials. Currently,
she designed costumes for Keifer Sutherland
in the FOX Television pilot Touch and has
just completed a remake of the film Sparkle

re-launched from the Ebony Repertory’s
production. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree
in Theater Arts from Hampton University

DAVID BLACKWELL (Production Stage
Manager) became the youngest stage
manager on Broadway at age 16! His work
on original Broadway and national tour
productions include A Raisin in the Sun,
Dreamgirls, Sweet Charity, The Wiz, Timbuktu,
Showboat, Sophisticated Ladies and Beauty
and the Beast. In 1988 David moved into his
television career as key stage manager/guest
director for A Different World, Fresh Prince of
Bel Air, Sister Sister and Last Comic Standing.
Most recently David returned to theatre for
Twist at the Pasadena Playhouse. He brings
to every project he approaches the gifts of a
culturally rich childhood and the invaluable
professional and ethical lessons learned from
his phenomenal parents, the beloved Mr.
Charles and Mrs. Frances Butler Blackwell.

EBONY REPERTORY THEATRE (ERT)
was founded in 2007 by Wren T. Brown
(Founder/Producer), Israel T. Hicks
(Founding Artistic Director, 1943–2010)
and a small group of concerned residents,
artists, politicians and colleagues. The
mission of the organization is to create,
develop, nurture and sustain a world-class
professional theatre rooted in the experience
of the African Diaspora and shaped by a
dynamic perspective that incorporates
an understanding of, and respect for,
the unique African American journey to
freedom. In February 2008, ERT became
the Resident Company and Operator of the
Nate Holden Performing Arts Center. As the
first African American professional (Equity
contract) theatre company in this city’s
history, ERT’s inaugural production (2008),
Two Trains Running, garnered three NAACP
Theatre Awards (Best Production, Best
Director, Best Set) and two Ovation Awards
(Best Production – Large Theatre, Best Lead
Actor – Large Theatre). In 2009, Pasadena
Playhouse joined ERT for a co-production
of the L.A. debut of Crowns, which received
an NAACP Theatre Award (Best Ensemble
Cast). Most recently, ERT’s 2011 production
of A Raisin in the Sun received critical
praise, winning two Ovation Awards (Best
Production – Large Theatre, Best Featured
Actress in a Play). While theatre is ERT’s
cornerstone, they have presented Dance:
Complexions Contemporary Ballet and
Rafael Amargo, Music: Ahmad Jamal,
Dianne Reeves, and Speakers: Dr. Cornel
West and Dr. Keith Black, among others.
Ebony Repertory Theatre produces an
annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. and a month-long Celebration of Black
History. This production is dedicated to our
Founding Artistic Director, Israel T. Hicks.
MICHAEL RITCHIE (Artistic Director) is
in his seventh season as Center Theatre
Group’s Artistic Director, and has led
over 100 productions to the Ahmanson,
Taper and Douglas stages since his arrival
in 2005. From 1996 to 2004 Michael
was the Producer of the Williamstown
Theatre Festival and prior to that he was a
Production Stage Manager in NYC. At CTG,
he premiered five musicals that moved to
Broadway – The Drowsy Chaperone (which
won 13 Tony Award nominations), Curtains
(eight Tony nominations) 13, 9 to 5: The
Musical and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.
He has produced 26 world premieres
including the musicals Minsky’s, Leap of
Faith, Venice and Sleeping Beauty Wakes,
and the plays Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad
Zoo (a Pulitzer Prize finalist that also
moved to Broadway), Water & Power and
Yellow Face, and he presented a broad

EDWARD L. RADA (Managing Director)
returns to Center Theatre Group this
year after previously serving as CTG’s
Chief Financial Officer for 12 years (19962008). Rada spent the past three years as
President of the Music Center Foundation,
a non-profit corporation that holds and
invests the endowment and reserve funds
for the Music Center and its resident
companies (including CTG). Prior to his
years at CTG, he was the Director of Finance
at The Old Globe in San Diego and principal
of Rada & Associates, an accounting firm
that specialized in entertainment-related
non-profit organizations and theatrical
productions. He is a graduate of Occidental
College in Los Angeles with numerous postgraduate coursework and credentials. He
currently serves on the board of trustees for
the pension, health and welfare and 401(k)
plans of I.A.T.S.E. Local 33 Stagehands
Union, on the board of directors of Theatre
@Boston Court, and on the board of United
Support of Artists for Africa/USA for Africa,
among other affiliations.

KELLEY KIRKPATRICK (Associate Artistic
Director). Since arriving at CTG in 2005,
Kelley has produced over 35 productions
at the Ahmanson, Mark Taper Forum and
Kirk Douglas Theatres, many of which have
gone on to have future lives on Broadway,
off-Broadway and beyond. He has had
the privilege of collaborating with local
and national theatre artists including The
Civilians, Rainpan 43, David Henry Hwang,
Ken Roht, Eric Rosen, Matt Sax, Lisa Kron,
Michael Friedman, Culture Clash, Alex
Timbers, Rude Mechs, Itamar Moses,
Melissa James Gibson, Danai Gurira, Nick
Jones, Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa and Roger
Guenveur Smith.
GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic
Director) led the Taper throughout its first
38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions
to its stage and winning countless awards
for himself and the theatre — including
the Tony Award for theatrical excellence,
Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s
Award for the Arts and a Guggenheim
fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels
in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in
consecutive years and, in 1994, three of
the four plays nominated for the Tony
Award for Best Play were from the Taper
(Angels in America won). In 1989 Gordon
took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004,
he produced the inaugural season in the
Kirk Douglas Theatre.
