THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
TODAY’S REFLECTION
A wise older priest I served with
many years ago would often
reply “That’s a ‘why question.’”
whenever I asked about some
questionable human behavior.
The implication was that my question could not be
easily answered, if at all.
As we close out the Christmas season, and come today
to our annual celebration of the Lord’s baptism, one of
those persistent “why questions” arises, namely, “Why
would Jesus Our Lord, the sinless Son of God, need
baptism?
St. Mark is no help. He skillfully bypasses the question,
and puts his focus mainly on Jesus’ identity. In his
gospel, written later, St. Matthew knew that the question
embarrassed the early Church, precisely because of the
belief that baptism takes away sin.
The dilemma: “What sins does baptism take away?”
The present Catechism, brought into being through the
efforts of Pope St. John Paul II, finally gives us an
answer: “Our Lord voluntarily submitted Himself to the
baptism of John, intended for sinners, in order to “fulfill
all righteousness.” (God’s plan of salvation.) Jesus’
gesture is a manifestation of His self-emptying.”
Of course, all this probing to answer a legitimate “why
question” could distract us from a more important
personal issue. It’s another “why question.” Why do we
keep violating our baptismal innocence? In other words,
why do we persist in our sins? Why do we procrastinate
about the whole business of personal reform? Could it
be that we think we don’t need reform?
A new year, barely ten days old, is a fine opportunity for
a resolution that has nothing to do with losing weight or
stopping smoking. It could not only change us for the
better now, but also our future life in heaven. Could it be
that personal reform is just too hard? Or that we don’t
want to give up our favorite sin?
The difficulty some people have in entering the doorway
to the kingdom of God is very much like the experience
of the boy who got his hand caught inside an expensive
vase. His upset parents applied soap suds and cooking
oil, without success. When they seemed ready to break
the vase as the only way to release the hand, the
frightened boy cried, “would it help if I let loose of the
penny I’m holding?”
So it is all too often with us. We cause others great
anguish and risk the truly valuable because we will not
2
let go of the insignificant things we possess today.

To whom have you been guilty of
showing partiality? What can you do to correct that?
