As the year 2015 begins, we
hold out hope for the
possibilities contained in a
new year. We envision a
better version of ourselves
and vow that this will be the
year we make that vision a
reality. I am excited as I imagine the best
possible Temple Beth Shalom, a true
community where we learn together and
from each other, support one another, make
deep and lasting relationships, pray, engage
with our faith and values, and work together
to make the world a better place.
In Midrash Ecclesiastes Rabbah, a rabbinic
commentary that’s nearly 2000 years old,
the Sages taught that the Creator led Adam
around the Garden of Eden saying, “Look at
My works. See how beautiful they are, how
excellent. See to it that you do not spoil or
destroy My world -- for if you do, there will
be no one to repair it after you.”
The environment is a hot topic these days.
It seems like everywhere you look, there are
stories about eating organic, growing your
own garden, or concern about the effects of
climate change. While a focus on ecology
seems like a recent phenomenon, it has
existed in Judaism since the inception of the
religion nearly 3500 years ago.
Temple Beth Shalom has been awarded a
Covenant Grant, one of the most prestigious
awards in the Jewish community, for our

A Covenant Grant is like the Jewish
equivalent of a Fulbright and will enable us
to transform the congregation. For many
synagogues, “escapes” to nature have
become central to their programming
calendar, through overnight trips, retreats or
other excursions from cities and suburbs to
more remote locations “in the country.”
Here, “in the country,” we at Temple Beth
Shalom have a great opportunity to go
“beyond the walls” of the synagogue and
enjoy the beauty and bounty of the natural
world around us.

A Message from our President
What are you thinking?
Now that is a loaded
question.
What is on your mind is
constantly in the state of flux
and varies in degree of
intensity and importance as
much as the ocean rolls onto
the shore of Ocean Beach at Fire Island.
The reality is that living is not easy. Working 50-80
hours a week is extremely draining. Caring for our
loved ones can be excruciatingly hard. Saving
money for bills and pleasure is a monumental task.
Finding me time is an exercise in futility.
Yet, I pose again the question “ What are you
thinking?” Do you think that how you think can
have a direct impact on what you think…what you
feel…and the quality of your life?

knowing subconscious.
There is our surface, external, interpersonal plane of
thought, which we utilize to interact with our
friends, family, coworkers and the strangers we
come in contact with as we go about our day.
For those unacquainted with the term mantra, it may
be an utterance, which may have a sacred meaning;
it may be numinous sounds or a syllable word or
group of words.
But I want to know, “What are you consciously
thinking just below the surface?”
MAN – To Think
As the waters rush onto the shore we see the tops of
the waves, the white caps, the sea foam. Just
beneath the churning waters are shells and pebbles
and fish and sand, all swirling around in their own
little sub world of the wave.
Have you ever had the experience of getting a song
stuck in your head?
This level of thought encompasses our sensory
stimulation field and our memories. Our sense of
smell, touch, hearing, sight and taste and our
memories inform and motivate us each millisecond
of each moment of each day we are alive.
For many people there are but just a few simple
thought patterns that can be detected at this
particular level.

Have you ever had the occasion to have the smell

Have you ever been so excited about something or

Utilizing a mantra is a slightly more sophisticated,
specific and conscious means of thinking in a
positive way.

Spotlight on New Members
An “Out of State” Family Joins the Temple

State borders can’t stop Ari, Heather and Jacob
“Jack’ Samson from calling Temple Beth Shalom

Fairfield, Connecticut, is not exactly Fairbanks,
Alaska, when you measure distances. Truth is, says
Heather Samson, the temple is only about 25 minutes
from their home, which is less than a mile over the
New York line.
In fact, Mahopac is a lot more convenient than even

to me,” Heather said. “And Ari has enjoyed meeting
the men. He really enjoyed working with other
congregants in helping to build the Succah.”
When Ari is not building Succahs, he finds time for
both work and play. He owns a software business
with headquarters on Long Island, but he spends
most of his time working out of his home or the
company’s data center in Thornwood.
Ari’s commitment to Judaism grew, in part, from his
favorable experiences at and long commitment to
Camp Ramah.
“Ari grew up in Rockland County and grew up with
the New City Jewish Center,” Heather said. “We
really loved that temple and the rabbis, but when we
moved to New Fairfield and Jack, our eight-year-old
son, was to start religious school, it just made sense
to find a temple closer to home.”
“Ari spent 11 years as a camper at Ramah in Nyack
and New England, and he worked at Camp Ramah
for five more years.”
The family looked around at temples in the area,
including one very near to their home, but TBS stood
out as their choice. They were also influenced by the
assistant rabbi at the New City Jewish Center, who
recommended our temple. It seems Temple Beth
Shalom is, indeed, becoming known in the lower
Hudson Valley.
Heather is a busy stay-at-home, keeping especially
active tending to the needs of their son. When free
time presents itself, she, also, loves to read, and she
enjoys sewing as well.
“We really wanted to be part of a Jewish community,
especially so for Jack,” Heather said. “We felt
comfortable when we visited and participated in
services at Temple Beth Shalom. It had a similar feel
to the temple my husband grew up with. We felt that
there was more of that community for Jack at Temple
Beth Shalom, and he has responded enthusiastically.
“He really loves going to Hebrew school,” Heather
added.
When asked about her husband’s leisure interests
today, Heather said he collects wines and is an avid
reader.
Jack is a second-grader in the New Fairfield
Consolidated School. He’s a Harry Potter fan, studies
Tai Kwan Do and loves swimming.
Ari has his roots in New City. Heather grew up in
New York’s Capital District, in the Troy-Clifton Park
area. While Ari was raised in a traditional Jewish
household, Heather’s family is Catholic.
“I am committed to bringing Jack up Jewish,”
Heather said. “I want him to develop a happy
relationship with G-d. We want him to be
comfortable and at home in the temple.”
She also acknowledged that it is not only their son, a Heather is interested in the Torah classes, so she can
learn more and share that information with Jack.

as they would have hoped. They do expect to attend
regularly when things become more settled.
In the meantime, the family seems very content with
the commitment they have made.
“Jack and Ari are very comfortable at the temple,
and everyone I’ve met has been very welcoming,”
Heather said. “We are very happy with the rabbi and
are thrilled that she brings to her position a woman’s
point of view and the sensitivities that come with
that. Rabbi Sarah is very easy to talk to, and she is a
good listener.”
Count the Samsons as just one of the newest families
to join Temple Beth Shalom, drawn by the warmth
of our congregants and our clergy.

Message from Jonathan Billig
Hi there. My name is Jonathan Billig and I'm a local educator with a passion for Jewish life and connecting
with nature. My career journey has taken me from the slopes of Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire,
where I initiated a thriving volunteer program, to the hills of the Hudson Highlands, where I farmed and
taught as the Lead Farm Educator at Eden Village Camp. But my roots are in local community, from my
days as a religious school kid in Westchester, to my time as an undergraduate at the Jewish Theological
Seminary and Columbia University in New York City.
In the last few years (and with the help of some great teachers), I've come to realize that my love of nature
does not have to be apart from Judaism. Take, for example, the holiday of Passover; it's a classic celebration
of new life springing forth, liberation not just from the physical land of Egypt but from the hardship and shut
-in-ness of winter. Yes, we celebrate spring by eating fresh green sprigs of parsley, but also the bitter herbs
we eat were originally the young, bitter first leaves of Middle Eastern lettuce. It was the harsh cold of April
in Eastern Europe that brought us the tradition of eating horseradish, which is much more hardy and
available in Poland in April! (that's also why our bitter herbs are not exactly bitter, but sharp tasting.) There's
about a million more cool things where that came from, because, as I hope we'll find together, Judaism is a
kind of treasure map for nature connection. I could explain that intellectually, talking about how Judaism
was once an agricultural religion that has preserved its original reverence for nature through thousands of
years of exile. But it's more effective (and fun!) to experience the natural rhythms of Judaism first-hand.
That's why we called our program experiencing Jewish life through the seasons.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you all, asking and answering some questions, and sharing an
experience of Jewish life through the seasons with you this year.

On Line SCRIP is here!!! By Lynn Michaels
In order to better serve the needs of our congregants, we’ve revamped the Temple
Beth Shalom Scrip Program. Effective November 1st, we have increased our stock
on hand of Scrip Cards. This enables you to simply turn in your order form to the
office and, for our popular items; you will likely walk away with your order in
hand. We will restock once each month (the first Sunday of each month) as well as
fulfilling your orders of the less popular items that you couldn’t take with you.
Of course, there are many scrip items that are available for purchase, right from
your home PC. As of this writing, there are 132 such items, and the list is growing
every week. They are delivered to you via E-mail, generally in about 90 seconds,
and can be used either on line or in the store. This is called Scrip Now and it’s a
fantastic improvement in “how scrip is done”.
Simply log in to http://ShopWithScrip.com and click the Green “Sign up” box. The
Temple Beth Shalom enrollment code is 47AELAD51LL75.
That’s all it takes to begin taking advantage of the easiest and most convenient
fundraising program you’ll ever use. Start using ShopWithScrip.com today!

Learning Can Be Fun by Bernice Guest
The ritual committee is excited to announce a new
educational program.
•
We know time is tight but many would love to learn
and have fun doing it. Therefore, we have decided •
to introduce mini-courses. These classes can meet
as little as one day/night or as many as five days/
•
nights or more.
Some of the classes that we thought might be of
interest to our congregants are:
•
Life -Cycle Events--- bris/baby-naming, b’nai
mitzvah, wedding, and death/shiva
•
Camp Ruach (spirit) Revisited—learn z’mirot
(songs for Shabbat and all year round)
Mitzvah Knitting – donate final pieces ( any
volunteers to facilitate this would be appreciated)
T’filah- learn prayers and become active participants in the service
Kashrut—what is involved in keeping a kosher
home
If anyone is interested in taking any of these classes, teaching/facilitating these courses please contact me. Also if you have any other ideas and
would like to see the classes given or are able to
lead these let me know as well.
Thank you from the adult education sub-committee.

Holiday Traditions including cooking and baking ( volunteers needed to facilitate the cooking/
baking)
The following is a letter written to the editor of a local newspaper. It is the opinion of our member
Elaine Jacobs. Comments are welcome.
To the Editor,
The results of the last election were disappointing. I can’t tell who disappointed me more the Democrats who
failed to get to the polls or the Republicans who voted blindly on the party line without thinking about the
quality of the candidates for who they voted. Only half the registered Democrats voted. Assemblyman Steve
Katz, who agreed to only one debate, said “I’ve been an assemblyman for the last four years. The people of my
district know who I am.” Do they? Do they know his voting record or that when he was stopped for speeding
was found to have marijuana in his car and then announced he now supported medical marijuana despite having
voted against it. Newly elected State Senator Terrance Murphy’s campaign took negative campaigning to new
heights.
On the cover of the November 13th Mahopac News the headline read ”Mahopac Celebrates Veterans Day”
with a red, white and blue banner and two smiling children proudly wearing their grandfather’s VFW caps. Inside the paper is a two page spread with pictures of marches, speeches and wreath laying. On the nightly news
there were reports of towns across America celebrating Veterans Day, yet only 36 per cent of Americans voted.
In Putnam County 47per cent of those eligible voted. While this exceeds the national average it is far too low
for our educated community.
We all want to remember and pay homage to those who fought and gave their lives to protect our democracy,
but perhaps the way to truly HONOR them is not just by pomp and flag waving but by THOUGHTFUL voting.
That is what they fought and died for.
Elaine Jacobs

PJ Library by Jeff Guest
Dear PJ Family,
I know from speaking with some of you how much you and your children
enjoy your participation in Temple Beth Shalom’s PJ Library initiative. At this
point our membership has become rather stagnant. I know that I have asked you
to talk to friends and relatives in our area who you feel might benefit, as you are,
from participation in PJ Library. Now I am going to ask you one more thing. If
you have an idea for a PJ Program, or a comment on what is good (or could be
better) please share it with me at [email protected] I would also love to here
from your children (with your help). Comments may be published in the next

Relocation specialist in the Tampa Florida area
My name is Mark Newman, a young Jewish professional in the
greater Tampa area. I pride myself on going the extra mile. Tampa is
on the west coast of Florida, an up and coming area with several great
synagogues, pristine beaches, and George Steinbrenner Stadium
( Yankee feeder league) Plus all the comforts of the NY area:
Professional Ice Hockey, Baseball & Football Teams, Theatre, comedy
clubs Busch Gardens, and the Tampa Zoo are all within the Tampa
metro area. It is perfect the perfect place for singles, families of any
size and retirees. In addition to finding your new home I will also
help you find one of the wonderful congregations sprinkled throughout
the Tampa area and help you get situated with all your Kosher needs.
Now is the right time to buy or invest in the Tampa area. Even if
you are years away from a move, I can find you an awesome property
that can be rented seasonally or year round until you are ready to
relocate.
