Penn’s only other dual meet against a team from Iowa inside the state came in 1998 against Iowa in Iowa City as part of the National Duals. Quakers Look to Even All-Time Series with Cyclones Penn enters today’s dual with a 1-2-1 record all-time against Iowa State in dual meets. Without Lorenzo Thomas in the lineup, the Quakers were unable to match firepower with the Mountain Hawks. C.J. Cobb and Joe Heyob had the wins for the Quakers. No. 25 Rider Holds Serve at Home, 21-12, Over Penn With Jeremy Schwartz injured, Penn knew it needed to put up points early against No. 25 Rider to complete a doubleheader on Nov. 30. The Quakers won the first three bouts in exciting fashion, with Caleb Richardson, Jeff Canfora and C.J. Cobb each picking up late wins. However, the wins were decisions and Penn’s 9-0 lead was quickly erased with losses in the next three matches. An overtime win by Lorenzo Thomas had the Quakers back in front, but three successive wins to close the dual secured the win for the Broncs. Quakers Clobber Clarion to Start Dual Season Youth was served for the Quakers in their first dual meet of the season, as four freshmen picked up wins in their dual meet debuts to lead the Red and Blue to a 25-13 win over Clarion on Nov. 30. Penn won the first four bouts of the dual, building a 14-0 lead. Major decisions from Marc Mastropietro and C.J. Cobb added bonus points, and a tech fall from Lorenzo Thomas late clinched the dual. Mastropietro, May Bethea, Joe Heyob and Patrik Garren each recorded their first dual meet wins as collegiate wrestlers. Thomas Reaches Final at Keystone Classic Penn placed three wrestlers at its annual Keystone Classic on Nov. 23, led by Lorenzo Thomas who took second at 184 pounds. Entering the tournament ranked No. 3 in the country, Thomas was edged in the final by No. 4 Max Thomusseit of Pitt, 5-3. Caleb Richardson was 5-1 in the tournament, taking third at 133 pounds. Freshman Joe Heyob was fifth at 174, posting a 3-2 record. Lorenzo Leads Way With Title at ESU Open Penn began the 2014-15 season with a grueling day at the ESU Open on Nov. 16. Returning All-American Lorenzo Thomas led the way with a championship run at 184 pounds, posting a 5-0 record -- highlighted by a 4-2 decision over Penn State’s Matt McCutcheon in the semis and a tech fall win over Taylor Jackson of Rutgers in the final. Caleb Richardson was fourth at 133, going 5-1 with two falls. Penn Plays Host to NWCA All-Star Classic The official start to the 2014-15 collegiate wrestling season took place at The Palestra on Nov. 1 as the Quakers hosted the NWCA All-Star Classic. Over 5,000 fans packed The Palestra as 20 AllAmericans and five NCAA champions competed. Penn had two wrestlers in “Feature Bouts” before the main event, Lorenzo Thomas scoring a tech fall at 184 and C.J. Cobb losing a close decision to Virginia Tech’s Devin Carter. Penn Wrestling Visited by Three-Year Old Cole Davis The University of Pennsylvania’s wrestling team had an extra body at practice on Dec. 11, with three-year old Cole Davis joining the Quakers for their afternoon practice. Cole, a Michigan native, has been coming to Philadelphia since 2012 to receive treatment for retinoblastoma – a form of cancer that develops in the retina and is the most common type of eye cancer amongst children. Cole, who has been receiving his treatments at the Willis Eye Surgery Center and Jefferson Neuro Hospital, comes from a wrestling family. His father, Clint, is a wrestling coach back home in Michigan, and Cole has been joining him in wrestling rooms for most of his young life. During the family’s many visits to Philadelphia during treatment, the Davis Family has visited many of Philadelphia’s landmarks, and Cole’s mother, Leanne, thought it might be time to add a visit to a place of comfort and familiarity during their most recent trip. After contacting head coach Alex Tirapelle, a surprise visit was planned for father and son to spend time with the team during a workout session. The visit for Cole and his family with Penn Wrestling was part of a successful trip to Philadelphia as it was recently determined that Cole’s tumors – which he has been battling since he was four months old – are cancer-free and with this round of treatment just completed and a fourth and final one in January all that stands between Cole and preventing future reoccurrence. Members of the Penn Wrestling program (L-R assistant coach Matt Valenti, head coach Alex Tirapelle, 149-pounder C.J. Cobb, 141-pounder Jeff Canfora, and assistant coach Pete Friedl) present Cole Davis with a Penn Wrestling t-shirt following his visit on December 11. Alex Tirapelle - Quaker Notemeal...
