I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:7-11) A Line in the Sand History remembers the famous event of June 22, 168 B.C. Antiochus IV Epiphanes arrived with his army to capture Egypt and instead was met by the Roman Senator, Gaius Popilius Laenas, who ordered him to leave Egypt or become an enemy of the Roman people. When the king said he would think about it, Laenas answered, “Think about it here,” and drew a circle in the sand around him. Baptism is a Line in the Sand Baptism is a line in the sand drawn by Jesus. It requires us to think about our faith and our relationship with Jesus. We cannot delay our answer. The Lord is waiting. Christian Baptism “The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist had an important influence on the theory and practice of Christian Baptism. St. Thomas Aquinas regarded it as the occasion of Christian Baptism.” (Brown, John, v. I, p. 54) John the Baptist reminded his listeners what Isaiah said in the 8th century B.C., “Prepare the Lord’s road; make straight his path.” “Like a modern bulldozer the angels were to level hills and fill in the valleys.” John the Baptist’s mission was to prepare a road for God to come to his people. His baptizing and preaching in the desert was opening up the hearts of men and women, leveling their pride and filling in their emptiness (p. 50). Pride keeps many from living their faith. The emptiness we discover in our lives can either be filled by God or by the world “which is passing away.” (1 John 2:17) To answer God requires a metanoia. It is a Greek word which literally means “a change of mind.” This is what Laenas required of Antiochus IV. He arrived with his army ready to occupy Alexandria on the Nile Delta. He expected to win. Now he had to change his mind or be declared an enemy of Rome. Pride keeps us locked in place. The metanoia we need is the “turning” back to God from sin. Fr. Paul Gary STEWARDSHIP AT ST. LUKE PARISH... Stewardship involves a change of heart, embodied not just in a single action. Nor even a series of actions, but in one’s entire life. The Building Peace Committee did not know the amount of taxes, interest or the miscellaneous charges for property improvements when the original Goal was set at $875,000. With 9 months left in the Campaign which ends as of June 30, 2015, we are now able to reset the Total Goal at $985,000. What happens if St Luke reaches the Total Goal? When the Total Goal is reached, St Luke will payoff the mortgage, all interest and taxes. We will own the new property outright! What happens to any funds collected over the Total Goal? The Diocese has granted St Luke capital campaign status until July 1st, 2015. St Luke will apply excess funds over the Total Goal towards future construction ( see Building & Planning Concept Drawing). How can I assist to reach the Total Goal? Please continue to use your green Building Peace envelopes to place in the collection baskets. If you do not have a green envelope, put your name on an envelope and place in collection basket. Administration will provide an annual total contribution listing for qualified tax deduction. If you prefer, contribute cash/check in the 2nd Building Peace collection on the first of each month. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.
