Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time  Sunday, October 26, 2014
SAINT LUKE CATHOLIC CHURCH
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2014
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Thirtieth Sunday of the Year
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they assembled in a body; and one of them,
a lawyer, in an attempt to trip him up, asked him, “Teacher, which commandment of the law is the greatest?” Jesus said
to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul and with all your mind.’ The second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments the whole law is based, and the
prophets as well.” (Matthew 22:34-40).
A Gothic Tale from the Deep South
Jeremy and his younger sister, Scout, lived with their father, a middle aged lawyer in Maycomb, Alabama during
the Great Depression. “Maycomb was an old town. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the
sidewalks and the courthouse sagged in the square.” Jeremy was ten years old and his sister was six the summer they
befriended a little boy named Dill. His real name was Charles Baker Harris, but who would call a four and a half year old
that? Their friendship was sealed over many hours in the tree house suspended between two trees in the back lawn.
The neighbor’s house fascinated the three young friends. The house was run down and looked abandoned. It
was known as the Radley Place. Someone lived there, but he hasn’t been seen in years. The shutters and the doors of
the house were closed. Everything that went wrong in the town was blamed on the mysterious force that lived in that
house. People would even cross the street if they had to pass in front of that house.
One day Jeremy, known as Jem, was pushing his younger sister down the street. She had curled herself up inside an old tire. Her arms were tightly wedged between her chest and knees. “Dizzy and nauseated,” the “tire bumped on
gravel, skeetered across the road, crashed into as barrier and popped” her out “like a cork onto the pavement.” There
she was in front of the Radley Place. Her older brother, Jem was screaming at her, “Don’t just lie there! Get up. Ain’t you
got any sense at all?”
To Kill a Mockingbird
This novel was published in 1960 and became an immediate success winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1961. The book
is a classic of American literature that was adapted into a movie in 1962. British Librarians listed this book in 2006 as
one every adult should read before they die. The character that lived in the Radley Place eventually becomes known and
everyone is surprised. In the story the children watch out for each other and try to protect their friends from danger. It’s
what God does for us, if only we would listen. “Ain’t you got any sense at all?” The world is full of danger and evil lurks
everywhere. We should also look out for each other as the Gospel said, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Fr. Paul Gary

Sharing our talents arises from the fact that God has given each of us the
ability and gifts to do certain things well, and we are to develop those
talents for the good of others.

Center regarding "Pathway to
Citizenship.” Presenter is Silvia
Falconi of the Latin American
Coalition. She will present guidelines on setting up a day to begin
application process for eligible residents to become full
United States citizens. This is not the actual application
for citizenship, merely an instructional time to know what
is involved and benefits to be realized from making the
application. Anyone interested in knowing more about
this process is welcome to attend.
As the cold weather
approaches, we are
called to remember
our brothers and
sisters who are living on the streets without a place to call "home". This will
be our 10th year to host the Blanket Banquet where we
gather in community with our guests living on the streets
and in homeless shelters to share food, music and fellowship, as well as to distribute much needed supplies.
Please help us to gather these items to help our guests
prepare for the months ahead. We are collecting the following items for both men and women to be distributed at
the Blanket Banquet: new or gently used blankets, sleeping bags, backpacks, hats and gloves, new underwear, socks and toiletries ,snacks for snack bags
(crackers, granola bars, etc). We are also collecting
gently used, clean winter coats, warm clothing and shoes
for both men and women. Canvas grocery bags are also very useful. Please leave any donations at the boxes
in the back of the church labeled “BB” for Blanket Banquet.
Volunteers are needed to make this event a success!
Please call or email Cindy Platko 980-236-7098/ [email protected] or Linda Flynn at 704-776-3787/
