It always seems odd to be writing a letter wishing you all a Happy New Year when you will probably be reading this before Christmas! So if you are reading this before 25th December, may I wish you a happy Christmas; and if you are reading it after, I hope you had a fabulous one! I do hope that 2014 was a good year for you but I know that for some of you, there will have been personal disappointments, break-down of marriage, loss of job, bereavement and it will be a year you will be glad to see the back of. This time of year is a time for reflection of the past year but also a time of looking forward to all that this next year has to offer. There will be a General Election, so we could have a change of government and my particular plea would be for the next government to leave education alone for a while! For each one of us, a new year provides the opportunity to start afresh, to make those resolutions and keep them. Each year we make our resolutions with every good intention but somehow, as the weeks and months go by, they fade into the recesses of our minds. Most of us fail year after year. I can’t even remember whether or not I made any last year! The good news about God is that he doesn’t mind if we fail. He helps us to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off…and start all over again, as the song says. Each day we are given a new opportunity to do better than the day before, to be better people and to help to build a better world. Most of us don’t have a very wide sphere of influence but if we all try to make our corner of the world a better place, eventually all the corners will join up to form a big circle! If only we could get that message out right across the nations, what a wonderful world this would be. (I seem to be speaking in song lyrics this month!) Whatever your resolutions and plans are, I pray that God be with you all at the beginning of this New Year and that you will know his blessing, his peace and his love in your hearts and homes throughout the coming year. May God bless you all. To remind you, the Neighbourhood Plan is everyone's chance to get involved in saying how the village should, or should not, develop in the years ahead. It’s your chance to say what you like about the village now, and what you would want improved, particularly where planning is concerned. Early in January we will be starting our first consultation with as many people in the Parish as possible. The consultation will be in the form of a survey delivered to every household. Please complete the survey; we know it will take a little time but everyone’s opinion is valuable and needed if we are to prepare an effective Neighbourhood Plan. Each street has a ‘champion’ who will help you complete the survey and thus create a combined view of what the village wants for the future of Eckington. We have recently received assurances about the extent that the Plan will be taken into account when planning decisions are made in the future which is why this is so important for the village. If you have any concerns or questions please telephone Ian Pickford on 01386 751335 or email: [email protected]. We also have a new web site that gives details of the work we are doing at www.eckingtonplan.co.uk. Page 8 Light Up the Community – Eckington Clara Zurick-Ball (aged 8) On a snowy Christmas night Jemima was going out on the Christmas window trail. She walked down Boon Street with her Mum and brother. Lit up in the windows she saw Mary & Joseph with baby Jesus, a window with five gold rings, an angel and a partridge in a pear tree. They turned the corner into Drake’s Bridge Road when she found a window she really liked. It had a Christmas tree with elves holding hands and dancing. The elves had green outfits and green matching hats with bells on top. Jemima was watching it so carefully that she didn’t notice her big brother Matt walk on with her Mum. Then suddenly she realised that an elf on the window had toppled over. Jemima touched the window and her finger went right through it. She climbed through and the elves all started throwing snow balls at her. “It’s all right I’m just trying to join in” said Jemima calmingly. “What’s your name?” interrupted an elf with a security outfit on. “Jemima” answered Jemima. “But we’re busy” said the elves. “Busy doing what?” “Ain’t your business that we’re stealing the new slide from the rec.” “Gulp!” said the security elf. “Why do you want to steal it?” asked Jemima. “Because, because... .” Long pause. “We want to.” “But it’s for the children to have fun on. Anyway it’s stuck to the ground” explained Jemima. The elves stood there looking confused. Suddenly a loud scream broke the silence. Jemima’s Mum was standing outside and couldn’t see Jemima in the street. “Uh oh” thought Jemima “I’d better be off!” But when she tried to leave there was a pane of glass stopping her. Then she remembered the slide and slid down it. She fell into a cold muddy puddle right next to her brother Matt in the rec. “Brilliant.” Jemima walked with her brother back to her Mum. Jemima explained to her Mum “I went into the window picture and all the elves were trying to steal the slide from the rec.” Mum laughed “Don’t be silly, it was just your reflection in the window. Suddenly one of the elves jumped out of the window and shouted “Oi! You weren’t meant to use the slide escape, you were meant to stay with us.” Mum gasped “You were telling the truth!” “I always do!” replied Jemima and then she asked “Can the elves come and live with us?” The elf asked “Does the security elf have to come? He’s so strict.” Mum replied “Yes, you should all come. As long as you tidy up the park rather than steal things.” The elf replied “Of course I’ll tidy. I’m good at that” and he started straight away tidying up the twigs that were lying around. Once he’d finished the elves got all the twigs together and made a magnificent hut which became the place for the under fives group to meet and play. In springtime the elves came back to the rec and built a little garden in the woods for everyone to enjoy. Page 9 Page 10 Page 11 Leave a light on and keep your home safe and secure Lighten up! Most house break-ins are opportunistic. Don’t give thieves a chance! House burglaries remain relatively low in West Mercia - less than 1% of homes are burgled each year. However, when it is dark outside, unlit houses can be a target for thieves. You can significantly reduce the chance of your home being burgled by taking a few simple precautions: A well-lit home gives the impression that someone is in. Use timer switches to turn lights on while you are out. Save energy and money with low-energy or dusk to dawn sensor light bulbs. A low-energy bulb costs less than 5p per week to run (if left on for six hours each day). Lock windows and doors and keep gates well secured. Invest in external lighting. For more practical home security tips, visit: www.westmercia.police.uk For More Information please contact Pershore Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team: PC Sean Woods & PCSO’s Julie Pardoe and Steve Tinkler on 101 or via email [email protected] Page 12 Bonfire Night: Just to say a huge thank you to everyone that donated pancakes. We raised £207 which was great. A special thank you to 2 ex Eckington school children Jonty Doyle and Tilly Bennett who helped serve on the night. They worked extremely hard. Auction of Promises: What a night! Fun was had by all, we have received excellent feedback on the evening which is always lovely to hear as we all put a lot of time and hard work in to organising and setting up this event. Thank you to EVERYONE who helped, donated, bought tickets, bought promises, starred in the DVD & produced the DVD it wouldn’t of happened without you. Starting the evening with a delicious glass of mulled wine prepared by Anne, almost a full turnout of members enjoyed a social evening of games and quizzes, including Smite & bingo. A selection of nibbles was enjoyed throughout the evening and we finished with teas and coffees and a slice of a Snowman Cake made by Alex. As well as prizes for the games and some wonderful raffle prizes, each member was presented with a small gift so no-one went home empty handed. It was a lovely evening on which to end our year. We did discuss a small amount of business, mainly to remind members about the Xmas Lunch at the Bell on Tuesday 9 December and also to update them on our first 2 skittle matches (we lost!). Our next meeting on 7th January will be an evening with Paul Harding to “Discover History”. Paul is part of a small, friendly team of professional historical interpreters who like to concentrate on providing historical accuracy and authenticity through demonstrating the personal lives of how our ancestors lived, worked and enjoyed their pastimes. What period of history will he be talking about at our meeting? Come along and find out!! Visitors will be welcome at the Village Hall at 7.30 pm, cost £4.00. The following issues were brought to the attention of the Parish Council: Tewkesbury Road, uneven surfaces (footways) – Matter reported to WCC, although no specific issues found – route is inspected on a monthly basis, any defects identified and addressed; Nafford Road – overgrown hedges and ditches in need of clearing – reported to WCC; Re-surfacing of Station Road (footways) – resurfacing is not due to take place in the immediate future, although another inspection will be made shortly. This may result in maintenance patch work being undertaken. 30mph speed sign, Pershore Road – WCC confirm that this will not be moved further into the village, this being due to lack of density of housing along this stretch. The Clerk will continue to pursue the matter with Safer Roads Partnership; Jarvis Street/School Road (cones) – The matter will be raised with the local Policing team, in order to ascertain the long term plan for this area; Road markings within the village – The Parish Council will carry out an inspection in the Spring to see whether any road markings within the village require re-painting. It was reported that the initial consultation period in relation to the Neighbourhood plan had now concluded. WDC had received 5 non-contentious responses. WDC will prepare a report for the January or February Planning Committee meeting. It was noted that WDC have approved the NHB application for the Village Hall (in relation to improvements). An application has also been lodged for Eckington Under Fives (in respect of Forrest School equipment). Maintenance/clearance work in relation to the left hand side of the Cemetery has now been agreed and is due to be carried out in January. It has been brought to the attention of the Parish Council that residents have been experiencing problems relating to the local bus service. If you have been affected in some way regarding this matter, the Parish Council would urge you to write to the bus company, with copies to Worcestershire County Council and the Parish Council, in order that the relevant bodies are made aware of the issues. th The next Parish Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 13 January 2015 in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. All are most welcome to attend. If anyone wishes to raise any issues direct with the Council, you may do so during the public open forum which is at 7.30pm prompt.
