What’s On
Jan – May 2015
Cambridge Corn Exchange - The Future...
The Corn Exchange opened in 1875 as a place dedicated to trading corn but went on
to be transformed into a live arts venue trading entertainment instead. Over the years,
the Corn Exchange has gained an exceptional reputation, bringing some of the most popular
and inspiring names in music, comedy and dance to Cambridge.
A quarter of a million locally made bricks were used in the construction of the Corn Exchange
but the number of wonderful memories embedded in the fabric of the building is even greater.
The running of the Corn Exchange will transfer from Cambridge City Council on 1 April 2015
to Cambridge Live. Cambridge Live is a charity set up to take responsibility for the successful
future stewardship of the venue, as well as Cambridge Folk Festival and other live
events in the city.
The charity inherits a venue with a great history and
we believe that the artistic and creative potential
offered by the new charity will add to our collective
store of memories and enhance the reputation of
the venue in years to come.
Antoinette Jackson
Chief Executive
Cambridge City Council
Cambridge City Council took the decision in 1971, to embark on the major refurbishment
project necessary to transform the Corn Exchange into the exceptional
live arts venue it is today.
Once again the city council has looked forward, carefully planning for the long term future
of this well-loved and valued city asset. The result is another inspirational and brave decision,
this time to place the future stewardship of the venue into the hands of the new charity,
Cambridge Live.
The venue’s reputation for excellence today is a testament to the dedication and work of
all the staff and supporters throughout the years. It is with great anticipation and excitement
that we look forward to building on that foundation and embracing what the future holds.
So, on Wednesday 1 April please do join us as we open the doors of the Corn Exchange
and Guildhall Halls to welcome you ‘behind the scenes’
for a day to celebrate Cambridge Live.
A full list of all activities along with a full running
orders will be available soon at

In Mexico, Morrissey has always been a prophet with honour. His songs of love, loss and longing,
with powerful imagery and metaphors have found a huge audience and chimed with generations
raised on rancheras and mariachis and their singers who were not afraid to cross the line.
Now the love can be returned, with a band made in Mexico City reinventing Morrissey’s
songs south of the border. Together they sound like a brass and accordion led combo from
the smallest village with the biggest bleeding heart.
The first of the gang is Camilo Lara, the force inside Mexican Institute of Sound, who together
with Sergio Mendoza (Orkesta Mendoza/Calexico), has put together a team of musical
gunslingers from Mexico’s finest bands. Viva MEXRISSEY!

When Beth Hart sings, clocks
stop, hearts dance and neckhair tingles. And when she
tells her rollercoaster story,
in a West Coast drawl that
could distil whisky at fifty
paces, it’s every bit as
compelling.
Naming themselves after the
unemployment benefit form,
UB40 formed in 1978, before
releasing their debut album
Signing Off in August 1980 –
considered by many to be one
of the greatest reggae albums
ever released by a British band.
Her latest album Bang
Bang Boom Boom is heavily
influenced by her formative
tastes with nods to gospel,
blues and features an
impossibly tender vocal on
the Billie Holiday-flavoured
Baddest Blues.
It was the start of a career
that has since seen the band
have over forty UK Top 40
hit singles.
A founding member of Planxty
and Moving Hearts, Christy
Moore was once named
Ireland’s greatest living
musician. The legendary Irish
folk singer-songwriter is back
touring and remains a relevant
force in today’s contemporary
music scene.
Line up features:
Robin Campbell, Brian Travers,
Earl Falconer, James Brown,
Norman Hassan & Duncan
Campbell.
His back catalogue includes
Ride On, The Cliffs of Dooneen
and Black Is The Colour, yet
more recently Moore has been
famed with the Penguin Book
of Irish verse which included
his song Lisdoonvarna.

Al Stewart’s seminal Year of

1976 was his first commercial

An evening in the company of an idiot. Or is he? Yes he is. Only
come if you like jokes though. If not you’ll be cross.
