Take a look at this list of CEOs and major influencers if you don’t believe me. People generally don’t like waking up early because it means you have to go to bed early and sacrifice socializing and TV time. The fact that this behaviour is a common trend amongst some of the most successful people in the world should be reason enough to try it, but if that’s not enough for you, here are 5 reasons why waking up early can help you become more successful. 1. The rest of the world is asleep Between 5 and 6am, no one is awake. There is no one texting you, emailing you, calling you or wanting your help or advice. Your social media feed is at a standstill. The world completely belongs to you and even better, it’s quiet. Whatever you’re doing, you’ll be undisturbed. If you’re working on your own side business or full time business, this is your primetime. The hustle and bustle of the world doesn’t start until at least 8am in most places, and when you need to think and produce valuable things for yourself or anyone else, a quiet mind is essential. This way you’re guaranteed to get it. 2. You get your stuff done before anything else You have probably heard the financial experts say to “pay yourself first” each time you get paid at work. This means before paying rent, bills, before anything, you put an amount aside in a savings account so you can start getting ahead. Waking up early is the same. Whether you’re working on a big project at work or breaking away entirely to be your own boss, getting up early is paying yourself first. Before you’re doing work for anyone else, you’re doing work for yourself to get ahead. No one can take that time away from you and you’ve had it when your brain is at its most alert and productive. 3. It’s in your DNA Humans have an ancestral trend of going to bed when it gets dark and waking up when it’s light. It’s called a circadian rhythm in case you haven’t heard, and living your life in accordance with it gives you far more energy and vitality than staying up late. You may very well be someone that works well at night, but by then you’ve already had a hundred demands on your time, energy and brain. You’ve made hundreds of decisions already and you’re now left ISO Certified College with the dregs of your mental energy when everyone else has already gotten the best of you. Like I said above, pay yourself first. 4. Routine To get up early and actually have energy, you need to go to bed early consistently. You can’t get up at 5:30am and be energised when you go to bed at 11pm one night, 10pm the next. The human body loves and thrives on routine, and when that routine coincides with your circadian rhythm, your body can start performing at its peak. 5. It gives you a big reason to get to work Let’s face it, at the end of a long day it’s easy to just plonk down on the couch rather than getting to whatever you should be doing to improve yourself. When you get up early in the morning, the last thing you want to do is waste time. You’ve sacrificed going to bed late and doing enjoyable things such as watching television, movies, playing games and so on so that you can get up early and get to work. When you get up early, it feels natural to just get straight into it. The last thing you feel like doing is bumming around and wasting that sacrificed time by not using it to its fullest. If a recruiter finds out that the information provided on your resume is inaccurate, you won’t have a chance at of landing the job – and you run the risk of developing a bad reputation in your industry. 6. Meaningful language, not clichés While some industry buzzwords are helpful, be careful not to overdo it with the clichés. Instead, use smart, meaningful language that will truly tell a recruiter about your character, your work ethic and your professional experience. 7. Words, not pictures Unless you’re applying for a position based on looks, don’t include a picture of yourself on your resume. Save the photos for social media, and focus on language that describes you and your accomplishments. 8. The benefits of hiring you Don’t just make your resume a list of positions held and duties accomplished. Frame your work history and skill set as benefits for the company hiring you – whether they’re quantitative, like increased sales, or qualitative, like great leadership. 9. Conventional formatting Creativity is great, but resumes aren’t the place to go wild with colors, fonts or backgrounds. Stick to white or beige paper, normal font types, and basic resume layouts. Note: Creatives (graphic designers, etc.) have a bit more wiggle room. 10. Consistency and neatness Use the same consistent pattern and formatting for spacing, bolding and highlighting throughout your entire resume. It will make it easier for recruiters to scan it quickly and pick out the important parts. 11. Correct spelling and proper grammar Proofread, proofread, and proofread again. Ask someone else to read it, too, to catch any errors you might have missed. Spelling, grammar and attention to detail say a lot about you, and they can help you make a great first impression with your resume. 12. Subheadings and bullet points Resumes with subheadings and bullet points for each section, company, job, and accomplishment are easier to read than long paragraphs describing skills and work experience. 13. Active words, not passive words Avoid passive phrases like “supported,” “aided” or “was responsible for,” and go with active phrases like “took charge of,” “headed up,” or “managed.” Use solid, active verbs that define exactly what you did and emphasize your role in doing it. 14. Academic achievements Academic achievements are important, especially if you’re recently out of school. Recruiters are almost always interested in education, handson training and other projects – and academic achievements can help boost your resume if you don’t have a lot of work experience. 15. Past experience List your work history for up to 12 previous years. More than 10-12 years of past work experience isn’t necessary, and will only waste a recruiter’s time. 16. A list of accomplishments Recruiters are interested in knowing what you did and how well you did it – with specific evidence when IN PRINT AND ON-LINE 23 possible. Listing your achievements and responsibilities individually makes them stand out more. 17. Continuous employment history It’s crucial to check your resume for anything that might look like chronic job-hopping or habitual flakiness. Though a few career switches are fine, most recruiters want to see a somewhat consistent work history with at least a few long-term positions. 18. Relevant qualifications List your qualifications in order of relevance to the position you’re applying for. If you’re applying for a web design job, for example, don’t list your former lifeguard position first. 19. A match with LinkedIn Most recruiters check out candidates on LinkedIn, so keep your LinkedIn profile up-to-date and consistent with your resume. Don’t have a LinkedIn profile? Now’s the time to create one – it’s a must-have in today’s job market. 20. A lasting impression Recruiters will go back to the resumes that leave a lasting impression. To create a lasting impression, highlight your skills and achievements, relate them to the position you’re applying for, and show exactly how the company can benefit from hiring you. They have stacks of resumes to review, and only seconds to look at each one. That means that your resume needs to pack a punch in a short time – and a small amount of space. To move onto the next round of the hiring process, you want to include the information recruiters are looking for, in the format they prefer. But what exactly do recruiters want? Below is a list of 20 things recruiters want to see on resumes, and how you can implement them for better results in the job hunt. 20 Things Recruiters Want To See On Your Resume: 1. Clear contact information List your name and contact information clearly, at the very top of the page. If the recruiter or hiring manager can’t easily contact you, they’ll move on to another applicant before you can say “Next!” 2. Your location In addition to your name and contact information, be sure to list your geographic location. Recruiters often look for job candidates in the same area, and if it’s not readily apparent that you’re local, you could get passed over. 3. Your career objective After your contact information, list the specific position you’re applying for, as it’s stated in the job description. It’s the first thing recruiters will look for when scanning your resume, and it’s an easy way to ensure that yours gets put in the right pile. 4. A short and sweet summary Grab recruiters’ attention with a short and sweet overview that outlines what you have to offer, in 50 words or less. Think of it as a two-sentence summary of your accomplishments and your goals that will make the recruiter want to keep reading. 5. Accurate information The number one rule of resumes? Here’s everything you need to know about cover letters! 1. What is a cover letter? A cover letter (sometimes referred to as an ‘application letter’) is a letter that is sent to a prospective employer, typically accompanying a resume. 2. Why are cover letters important? I would strongly recommend a job applicant to send a cover letter because it works as a brief description of the applicant’s abilities, capabilities, experiences and qualifications. I believe the only time you may not write a cover letter is when the employer states they do not need it. Further, what is written on the cover letter can make or break your chances of being called for an interview. Basically, application letters give the employer the first impression about the applicant. However, as we all know impressions can be deceiving yet employers bank a lot on the impression they perceive on the cover letter. 4. What should I include in my cover letter? In a cover letter, an applicant states why they are best suited to be awarded the job they are seeking. It is advisable to make the cover letter clear, brief and to the point, briefly outline your skills and experiences. 5. Should I still send a cover letter when it’s not requested? Some people believe that if they’re not explicitly asked to send a cover Jan. 10 – Jan. 24, 2015 letter, then it isn’t necessary, simply because employers find relevant employment information within the CV. This assumption is incorrect. Not only are cover letters an important part of the job application process – they also give you the opportunity to share relevant information that may not fit into your resume. 6. Do I need to include a cover letter with email applications? Cover letters are important to send when you are doing a request for employment by email. The cover letter can either be sent as an attachment alongside the resume, or it can be written on the body of the email. If you’re sending the application directly to a specific individual’s email address, you can address the person you’re sending the application to in a more personal manner. For example, instead of saying ‘Dear Hiring Manager’, you can use ‘Dear Ms. McGregor’. Experts encourage and recommend applicants to make use of the subject heading to attract the employers’ attention on exactly what you are applying for before reading the rest of the body. Even with the changing technology, cover letters have been encouraged by human resource managers as a tool for easy assessment on the viability of a candidate. Furthermore, human resource managers use the cover letters to grade the applicants and weed out the ones they think are not equipped for that particular job.
