CHARITY SPOTLIGHT STRICTLY STAR TO OPEN Dinner Dance event The Dog Trouble Foundation ADVERTORIAL lavia Cacace, and her husband Jimi Mistry, will be opening Wokingham’s Dog Trouble Foundation Charity Dinner Dance on Saturday, 16th August. Strictly Come Dancing’s Flavia will also be offering dance workshops earlier in the day, with all proceeds going to The Dog Trouble Foundation. Flavia commented, “I am so excited about being involved in this event, it is going to be a great night. I am in full support of this worthwhile charity. The work that Jo does is something I'm very interested in and believe could help so many dog lovers and dogs live the happiest lives alongside each other.” The Black Tie event will take place at The Dog Trouble premises in Wokingham, with all funds raised going to the newly established charity. The Dog Trouble Foundation was set up by founder, Jo Cottrell, to provide on-going support and dog behaviour training to rescue centre staff and volunteers, in conjunction with behaviour rehabilitation for dogs in rescue centres who require more specific rehabilitation to improve their chances of being rehomed. The Foundation also helps to educate young people and Flavia will also be delivering two adults regarding the 30 minute dance workshops correct care and handling of dogs to in Jive and Argentine Tango ensure the welfare of on Saturday 16th August at 4pm the dog and the safety each workshop costs £25pp of both the handler and the general public. There will also be a raffle and an auction – donations would be gratefully received for both. At 4pm on Saturday 16th August, Flavia will also be delivering two 30-minute dance workshops - in Jive and Argentine Tango. Each workshop costs £25 per person. Jo Cottrell, Founder and Owner of Dog Trouble said, “This event is about raising funds to help educate and support Rescue staff in dog behaviour and rehabilitation so that Rescue centres can provide the basic behaviour fundamentals with dogs in their care. Current studies have shown that of the dogs rehomed by the RSPCA, 16% are returned, 68% of which are returned due to problem behaviour. Our goal through the work of this charity is to reduce that number by working together to ensure they have the best chance of being permanently rehomed. Through the charity education programme we can also provide education for people, particularly children on staying safe around dogs and how to care for them, with the view to preventing dog behaviour incidents.” For further information about the Dog Trouble Foundation and to book tickets on-line, please visit www.dogtrouble.co.uk. 2 LOOK IN LIFESTYLE AUGUST 2014 3 4 LOOK IN LIFESTYLE HELLO welcome ith the holiday season now in full W swing and a lot of us enjoying a little Mark Collins-Wood extra time due to the school holidays, we hope you find our August edition EDITOR interesting and useful. There is a whole world of wines out there (at Laithwaites we have almost 2000 wines to select from) so really you are spoilt for choice, it’s just a case of trying before you buy and letting somebody help you make the right selection. Any good wine merchant should have somebody to advise you on your selection, and should offer to organise a private wine tasting for you to try your selections to put your mind at ease, after all it is the most important day of your life. Here are our top tips for some of the most common questions we are asked when discussing wedding wines. A Ask for a copy of our new Wine Wedding Service brochure or simply book a free, in store wine tasting at your local branch. prosecco or champagne? Well this is simple in my eyes and normally the decision comes down to budget. Prosecco is far cheaper than shelling out for Champagne and is incredibly fashionable at the moment, so my top tip is get Prosecco for the toasts and spend the savings on your wine for the wedding breakfast instead. is there champagne that i can serve with weDDing cake? Well the good news is yes in most instances, although it does depend upon the cake so for a sponge cake I suggest a demi-sec (slightly sweeter style) of Champagne, and for a fruit cake I’d pick something with a higher proportion of Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier to give the Champagne a little more body. what is rose champagne? Rose Champagne is basically Champagne that has during the wine making process has been pressed slightly harder the colour come from the skin of the grapes where the juice from the grape has had contact with the skin of the grape after pressing. Champagne is traditionally a blend of 1 white grape (Chardonnay) and 2 red grape (Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier) varieties. reD or white wine, what shoulD we serve our guests on the Day? This is where your wine merchant should come into their own & be able to help you with your selection, be it matching the wines to the food that you have selected, or simply picking out a selection of wines that will appeal to the guests. It’s always worth remembering that with a wedding you are looking for a wine that will please everybody, not just you, I always suggest that as it’s your big day why not have a bottle of something special just for the top table if you have a favourite style that might not appeal to everybody’s taste buds. what is the correct way to open a bottle of champagne? Opening a bottle of any sparkling wine can sometimes be tricky; the corks do often have a life of their own and can quite often want to escape prematurely. My top tip is grip the cork in your weaker hand and keep that still (perhaps even cover the cork with a tea towel or napkin for added protection), and then slowly turn the bottle by its base using your stronger hand, with the emphasis on slowly. Over the years Champagne glasses have changed size and shape according to fashion, however modern thinking is that Champagne flutes are now preferable. The reason for this being the case is that the flute’s shape is designed to enhance the aromas of the Champagne and aid the flow of the bubbles, a key aspect when it comes to drinking fizz. how many bottles of wine will i neeD for my guests? Well this often depend on the guests is my normal reply, however its a safe bet to say that over dinner on average it’s half a bottle per person. From a standard sized bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine you can expect to get 5-6 glasses of champagne and for still wines you can expect to get 4-5 glasses depending of course upon the size of the glasses and the person pouring. isn’t it more expensive to take your own wine as you have to pay corkage? Often this actually isn’t the case, on average a venue will charge somewhere in the region of £10-£15 per bottle for corkage, my tip is haggle. Always negotiate after all if you don’t ask you don’t get, and its worth asking for a flat fee for corkage instead of paying by the bottle. Some venues even have a free corkage policy as selecting your own wines is becoming even more popular. House wines are generally priced at £18-£30 per bottle depending on the venue and on occasions can be less than thrilling, so spend £8-£15 on a great bottle of wine from your merchant and pick something that you really enjoy & negotiate the corkage. In the early days I remember vividly one particular bride. I was applying her foundation and instantly knew that something was different. I had only done the makeup trial a couple of weeks prior to the big day, which had gone well. The bride had good skin; even-toned and unblemished. But today, on her wedding day, her skin felt different; the makeup literally glided on and practically blended itself. When I remarked on how amazing her skin was and the make up was going on like a dream, she revealed that she’d had a facial the week before. I now tell everyone that a facial is a must before any special occasion where you want your makeup to look a little extra-special. It helps the makeup appear more natural and you, a more polished version of yourself rather than cosmetics just sitting on your skin. So, with this tale in mind, we have put together a series of beauty recommendations in preparation for that big day... H HydraFacial MD scheDule a series of facials We recommend a facial every four weeks, starting six months before the wedding. Depending on the skin issues you want to tackle before the big day, you usually have to ‘pick a lane’ when it comes to facials or otherwise experiment with different kinds a brightening peel one time, a rejuvenating antioxidant facial the next, or a deep cleansing galvanic - to see what your skin responds to best. But what if you could get the results of ALL these facials from just ONE facial? introDucing the hyDrafacial The HydraFacial® is like no other other facial that you’ve ever experienced! It is a clinically proven treatment that is designed to work in the skin, rather than just on the skin to produce instantly visible results that last. Often referred to as the ‘Red Carpet Facial’ because of it’s celebrity fan base which includes, Beyonce, Kate Winslet, Paris Hilton and Alex Gerrard to name but a few, this seriously special facial leaves skin super hydrated, plumped and glowing. HydraFacial is performed using a vacuum based exfoliation tip that is loaded with a cocktail of serums, including antioxidants and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin and combat skin issues. This is the only treatment that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, 22 hydration and antioxidant protection in 5 steps: Step 1. cleansing and exfoliation - Dead skin cells are removed to reveal healthy new skin. Step 2. acid Peel - An infusion of glycolic solution which helps to loosen impurities, blackheads and debris from pores without irritation. Step 3. extractions - Painless, automated extractions use vortex suction to clean out pores and remove blackheads. Step 4. Hydration - Antioxidants and Hyaluronic Acid are vortex infused to plump, nourish and protect the skin. Step 5. maintain - The HydraFacial Daily Essentials help maintain, prolong and enhance results between treatments. The treatment can also be tailored to individuals with ‘add on’ treatments for acne and anti-aging. If you’re used to squirming and wincing during a traditional steam and extraction then you'll be pleasantly surprised. In fact, the HydaFacial is pretty much pain-free. For skin that needs a little more attention we recommend two treatments spaced two weeks apart, followed by monthly maintenance. Otherwise one a month is suffice. With virtually no discomfort or post-treatment downtime to get your skin looking it’s best for your wedding Kate Winslet LOOK IN LIFESTYLE WEDDING SPECIAL FEATURE AUGUST 2014 23 BEAUTY see an brow specialist “Aim to look like the best, not a different, version of yourself.” You need lead time to sculpt brows or grow back sparse spots. Our experts will follow the natural line of your brows and take a conservative approach. The most flattering shape for brides is full with a nice arch. Book shapings every four to six weeks leading up to the wedding, and refrain from DIY plucking between visits. Remember: Well shaped brows can frame the face and your makeup. Suzie Coxon, Aura Spa I always say that on your wedding day you should “aim to look like the best, not a different, version of yourself”. Interacting with the bride is so important. One thing I always discuss are lashes! I always recommend either the LVL lash lifting or Nouveau Lash Extensions, so you aren’t worrying whether strip lashes will end up on your cheek by the end of your wedding day! go in for a makeup trial test run a spray tan get a manicure & peDicure You may be an old hand at applying self-tan, but why risk streaks and orange hands on your big day? Your best bet for a faux glow is to leave it to the spray-tanning pros. If you plan on getting bronzed before the big day, a trial application is a must. Be specific about the kind of color you're hoping for (and remember to err on the side of sun kissed it's better to be barely bronzed than overly orange plus you can deepen the tan with an at home gradual self-tanner). If you're unhappy with the results or have second thoughts, a five-week period will allow your tan time to fade and trial another one. Book a manicure and pedicure for one day before. By giving yourself a 24-hour grace period, you won't be rushed and your nails will have adequate time to dry and harden. To ensure polish perfection on the big day, keep an extra bottle of polish and a file on hand for last-minute chip repairs. Too much of a worrier?… Then opt for gels that are instantly dry and won't chip or smudge. So if you are due to get married, or have any other special occasion you want perfect make up for, don’t leave it till the last minute… the secret is all in the preparation. One of the most important parts of the trial is the initial consultation. Getting the bride to communicate how she envisages herself looking is imperative. Pictures are a great guideline so we can get an idea of the type and strength of look, colours and style of make-up you want to achieve. It is important to be realistic though! I often experience brides bringing in pictures of a model that has a completely different face shape or colourings. You can see the picture has been touched up so much that the girl in the magazine probably doesn’t even look like the girl in the magazine! But now that warm weather has arrived, the extreme heat and humidity can make it difficult to spend any time outdoors - let alone exercising. Whilst exercising in the heat is generally safe for most people, taking a few extra precautions will help you stay cool and prevent problems. Y illness can worsen, causing symptoms like confusion, unconsciousness, vomiting, breathlessness and skin that feels hot and dry (a sign that the body isn't sweating). These are signs of heatstroke, which is deadly and requires immediate medical attention. But you don't have to give up exercise just because it's hot outside. 13 tips to help you beat the heat get your doctor’s okay If you are new to fitness or taking any medications, check with your health care professional before exercising in the heat. Newcomers to exercise will be more sensitive to the heat, and some medications can impair your body’s ability to regulate temperature. 1 wear ‘wicking’ fabrics While cotton is comfortable, it doesn’t wick away moisture very well. Choose a loose-fitting polyester/cotton blend instead, or synthetic fibres designed especially for wicking during exercise. 2 Protect your skin Apply sunscreen with SPF15-30 (or higher) to prevent sunburn - even on cloudy days. Use an oil-free formula that won’t interfere with your body’s ability to cool itself down and select a sweat-proof variety to prevent sunscreen from irritating your eyes. Clothing with tight weaves, sunglasses, and a lightweight hat with a brim can also help block the sun’s harmful rays. 3 drink often Hydrate your body before, during and after your workout by carrying cold water and drinking it often. Staying hydrated and getting out of the heat can help prevent and treat heat exhaustion. Lower your exertion (intensity) level during physical activity on days with extreme heat and high smog. This dangerous weather warrants easy walking, relaxed cycling or light gardening instead of vigorous exercise. 7 acclimate to the heat Even the fittest people can have trouble exercising when it's hot and humid. Start by exercising in the heat for only a few minutes each day and gradually increase the amount of time you can tolerate outdoors. Seek shade Parks, trails and other tree-lined areas can help you stay cooler than direct sunlight. 8 9 monitor your heart rate If your intensity level rises above your target range, slow down or stop to avoid further stress. Listen to your body If you notice any symptoms of heat illness (see "Danger Signs"), stop your workout. 10 AUGUST 2014 It's not a good idea to "push yourself" in extreme heat.
