brand — in stores and restaurants. It’s
tart, crisp, dry with puckery grapefruit
peel, lime, lemon zest and subtle grass
and herbs. It’s a classy wine, perfect for
seafood, aperitifs, chicken and pork, and

refers to Lake County’s latitude. Lake
County is north of Napa and Sonoma and
is named for Clear Lake, the largest
freshwater lake in Californina. It’s home
to a number of wineries. Line 39 is a
brand of Ceccheti Wine Co., founded by
Roy Cecchetti and his wife Rachael in
2007. The company makes five
brands: Austerity, Backhouse, Exitus,
Line 39, and Redtree. Bob Broman is the
winemaker.

Show categories for this competition are
a little different. There are four: Best Chardonnay, Best Riesling, Best
Cabernet Sauvignon and Best Ice Wine. So you can see how important
Riesling is. This year’s Best Riesling is Michigan’s Chateau Fontaine 2011
Semi-Sweet Riesling — which is amazing in such a big field of Rieslings.

In the recent International Eastern Wine Competition’s Riesling
Championship, Michigan bested NY again with the 2011 Riesling from
Laurentide, a new winery on the Leelanau Peninsula.
Also in the Finger Lakes competition, Michigan’s Black Star Farms Arcturos
2011 Pinot Noir and 2011 Riesling grabbed Double Golds. See the complete

Oh, and about those two competitions and the Michigan winners — both
wines were made by Shawn Walters at French Road Cellars — the custom
winemaking business in Lake Leelanau.
Michigan’s Brys Estate on Old Mission Peninsula
New vintages of this boutique winery’s most popular wines are being
released today — the Pinot Noir/Riesling, Naked Chardonnay, Dry Riesling,
and Pinot Blanc, all from the 2012 vintage. The 2011 Merlot also is available
for sale today. The Naked Chardonnay (unoaked) is one of my all-time
favorites from this winery.
In honor of Stephanie Maryann Brys Sr., vintner Walter Brys’ mother, who
loves her son’s Rieslings and will turn 95 on April 5, the 2011 Brys Estate
Riesling will be sold at a 20 percent discount for the month of April.
