Unwinding from the past
RUST BUCKET
Len Rust
As we move into 2015, fast moving technologies are hitting the headlines. Complex changes and trends that will rede=ine business markets plus loads of wishful thinking! At the same time we have stories of vendors that are continuing to split apart. New business models, many new strategies, changing leaders, new competitors all are challenges for vendors and buyers. The CIO’s role also continues to evolve to master the business demands and issues from customers plus security concerns.
Faster, smarter, leaner business is today being shaped by Cloud Computing, Mobile and Big Data Analysis. An explosion of app.’s, devices, platforms and social media are all transforming the marketplace. For both IT and business executives knowing which vendors seem to be moving in the right direction is a key factor in decision making, especially considering all the moving parts that are now shaping our industry. The mobile web world is transforming enterprises on how connections are made with customers and also the interaction with partners and employees.
Leadership is being redeFined in today’s real-‐time world, with many companies moving from huge data centres to software as a service. The cloud vendors and the channel partners that focus around services have the best chance of winning. Many vendors especially those that have older sales models built around moving hardware, software and building data centres all areas where margins have been squeezed over the past three years are now being pressured to make technology changes to stay competitive.
The cloud model today represents a major stage in the relentless disaggregation of businesses – breaking up organisations and roles and functions into new logical components and also In this week’s industry player profile interview we speak to

keeping in-‐house those that are core and letting someone else run everything else. This model requires new kinds of management styles, new ways of managing teams, new buying and evaluation processes and new ways of valuing the enterprise itself.
Many vendors as they ‘unwind from the past’ are also creating speciFic business units looking at verticals in each space. As part of this strategy they are also acquiring companies with deep domain knowledge and skills to service the chosen sectors. These sectors are mainly where organisations are Figuring out how to unwind themselves from the past and move into the current business landscape.
There is a lot happening – smart devices are the fastest-‐growing element of the Internet of Things where everyday objects are linked to the internet to collect and receive information from other connected devices and web services. Disruptions are the norm as digital businesses today open the Floodgates to the technologies all of which will have a huge effect on the most powerful assets of digital business – staff and customers.
Towards 2020 there is a smorgasbord of digital opportunities for companies to foster a renaissance allowing many of them to reconnect with what made them industry leaders in the past. Restructuring company’s portfolios is like trying to repaint the Sydney Harbour Bridge. By the time the crew reaches the far side of the bridge it’s time to start all over again. Most IT organisations are now engaged in a never ending task of technology renewal. IT modernization also requires a substantial culture change within the organisation and particularly in the relationship between a widening audience beyond the walls of the business and the IT organisation.

Complexity of storing and managing data
hinders ANZ business innovation
Complexity of storing and
managing data hinders ANZ
business innovation
More than three in four IT decision makers in Australia and New Zealand claim that the complexity of storing and managing data is impacting their ability to innovate, according to new research by Nimble Storage. At the same time, deploying new storage solutions which are automated and include easy-‐to-‐use storage management features are highly prized by 89 per cent of professionals when considering a new storage solution purchase. The survey found found that storage solutions which reduce management complexity, enable storage performance to be monitored and slash costs in the long-‐term are attractive to 91 per cent of respondents and deemed to provide extra value. However, 64 per cent of IT decision makers purchase storage capable of more performance than they can consume because they lack conFidence in the vendor’s ability to measure and conFigure precise real-‐time demand for performance. Mike Israel, IT Manager at Knox Grammar School in Sydney, said, “ When we look to deploy storage solutions, we look at a vendor’s whole of support strategy from the technology itself to proactive monitoring offered by the vendor’s engineers as well as functionality support provided by automated telephone and email alerts.” The Nimble survey found also that the ability to leverage existing in-‐house staff skills, the size and Financial stability of a vendor and certiFied support for a speciFic application were important to only one quarter of respondents when selecting new storage infrastructure. An existing relationship with a vendor, industry speciFic expertise and pre-‐qualiFied solutions/reference architecture was of interest to less than one in Five respondents.
Five digital workplace trends on
the rise
Many workplace procedures are still just an online version of their analogue predecessors with clunky, manual processes that get in the way of doing business, according to new research from Concur. Matt Goss, managing director – SMB, Concur, said, “Employees have grown accustomed to the friendly, intuitive experiences that smartphones and tablets deliver. Businesses need to come to the party and deliver the same experience in the workplace. Often, businesses use outdated practices not because there aren’t better alternatives out there, but through force of habit. “While technology doesn’t necessarily mean less work it does hold the promise of bringing new, intuitive tools into our work lives to make it better.” INSIDER EDITION
Five digital workplace trends on the rise 1. Digital contract-‐signing. Signing a contract can still involve a surprising amount of hassle and take days to complete, with printing, signing, scanning and emailing. With e-‐signature services like Adobe Echosign and Docusign, a contract can be sent, signed and delivered with a few clicks. e-‐signatures can lead to a bigger deal size, shorter sales cycles and higher win rates. 2. Smartphone as your wallet. Wallet-‐free living is coming soon. ApplePay ensures that we’ll see much more innovation in this area very soon. Google, PayPal, Visa and MasterCard are all in various stages of developing mobile banking systems. 3. Conference calls that work. New solutions like UberConference automatically call you when it’s time for the meeting to start, show you who’s in the meeting and who’s speaking, plus how long they stayed, all without lifting a Finger. 4. Hands-‐free commuting. OfFice culture exploded in the post-‐industrial era, which meant that the morning commute became accepted as a torturous, yet necessary, part of working life. With advances like driverless cars, adaptive trafFic signals, and road trains bumper-‐to-‐bumper trafFic may soon become something of the bygone era. 5. Paperless receipts. The promise of paperless ofFices has long been with us and yet only now with smartphones does this vision seem to be within grasp. Evernote’s ScanSnap is one example of how painless it can now be to capture and organise important documents, like receipts. With a single button, you can ditch paper-‐bound methods for good. OZAPP Top 20 finalists selected

HP reveals cost of cybercrime in Australia escalates 33
percent
RUST E-RESEARCH
HP recently unveiled the results from a third annual study conducted by the Ponemon Institute that documents the rising cost, frequency and time to resolve cyber-‐attacks in Australia.
Conducted by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by HP Enterprise Security, the 2014 Cost of Cyber Crime Study1 found the average annual cost of cybercrime incurred by a benchmark sample of 30 organisations in Australia was $4.3 million, representing a 33 percent increase since the study was initiated three years ago. According to the 2014 Cost of Cyber Crime Study, smaller organisations in Australia experienced a higher proportion of cybercrime costs relating to web-‐based attacks, malicious insiders, malware, viruses, worms, trojans and botnets. In contrast, larger organisations in Australia experienced a higher proportion of costs relating to denial of services, malicious code, phishing, social engineering and stolen devices.
Companies deploying security intelligence systems experienced a higher return on investment (ROI) at 23 percent, than all other technology categories. Advanced security intelligence tools such as Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solutions, Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) with reputation feeds, network intelligence systems and big data analytics have helped companies detect and contain cyber-‐attacks to achieve a lower annual cost of cybercrime.
“Adversaries only need to be successful once to gain access to data, while businesses must be successful 100 percent of the time to stop the cascade of attacks their organisations face each day,” said Shane Bellos, general manager, Enterprise Security Products, HP Software, HP South PaciFic. “No amount of investment can completely protect organisations from highly sophisticated cyber-‐attacks, but improving the organisation’s ability to disrupt the adversary at every step of the threat lifecycle will signiFicantly improve attack containment and reduce the Financial impact”.
Key Eindings from the 2014 Cost of Cyber Crime study include: • Cybercrimes continue to be very costly: The average annual cost of cybercrime incurred was $4.3 million, with a range of $409,959 to $15.8 million; an increase of 8.4 percent over the average cost reported in 2013.
• Cybercrimes are intrusive and common: The 30 organisations from Australia in the study experienced 47 successful attacks per week, compared to 41 attacks per week when the study was initially conducted in 2012.
• Cybercrimes require more time to resolve: The average time to resolve a cyber-‐attack was 23 days, while the average cost incurred during this period was $276,323. Results show that malicious insider attacks take an average of 51 days to contain.
The most costly cybercrimes • The most costly cybercrimes are those caused by denial of services, malicious insiders and malicious code. These account for more than 50 percent of all cybercrime costs per organisation on an annual basis.
• Business disruption continues to represent the highest external cost, followed by the costs associated with information loss. On an annual basis, business disruption accounts for 40 percent of total external costs (down 4 percent from last year), while costs associated with information and revenue loss account for 54 percent of external costs (the same as last year).
• Detection and recovery are the most costly internal activities. On an annual basis detection and recovery combined accounted for 53 percent of the total internal activity cost with productivity and direct labour representing the majority of these costs.
• Organisations in energy, utilities and Financial services experience substantially higher cybercrime costs than organisations in hospitality, consumer products and retail.
Deployment of security intelligence solutions makes a difference
Organisations in Australia using security intelligence technologies were more efFicient in detecting and containing cyber-‐attacks. For those having deployed a SIEM solution, the average cost savings were $1.9 million per year compared to companies not deploying security intelligence technologies. Prevention System (IPS) and Next-‐generation Firewall (NGFW) boasted a 21 percent ROI result.
“Executives should have a disaster recovery plan in place for IT breaches, just as they do for natural disasters,” said Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder, Ponemon Institute. “Based on more than 2,000 interviews, the annual Cost of Cyber Crime research provides valuable insights into the costliness of different attacks to help businesses prepare the right protection and response strategies to minimise risk”.
In addition to the third annual study of organisations in Australia, Ponemon conducted cyber cost studies for organisations in France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. A study of Russian companies was conducted for the First time this year. Of the countries surveyed, the U.S. sample reported the highest total average cost of cybercrime at $12.7 million, while the Russian sample reported the lowest, at $3.3 million. The global results are available in a separate report entitled, 2014 Global Report on the Cost of Cyber Crime.
Polycom’s top 7 workplace of the future predictions
for 2015
RUST E-RESEARCH
The way we work is changing. Collaboration technologies are ushering in a next generation workplace that is more productive, ef=icient and delivers meaningful cost savings to organisations of all sizes across the globe. With new, more advanced mobile devices giving employees the freedom to work from anywhere, these technologies will only continue to reshape the look and feel of the “of=ice”. As such, Polycom is unveiling its top seven technology predictions for 2015 and beyond that we believe will transform how we work now and in the future. Globalising companies will rapidly adopt and use collaboration tools
Global expansion means working across time zones, borders and cultures. The future of business requires collaboration tools that extend business and defy distance and time. Ultimate success comes when organisations embrace individual collaborative preferences and build a culture of collaboration by accommodating a variety of tools from email, telephony, social media, video and content sharing. In 2015, more tools that enable visual communication from people to content will help break down communication borders and enable more global success. Integration, not just interoperability
Video conferencing is altering business models, according to the white paper, “Revolutionising the Future Workplace” by futurist Jack Uldrich. It is quickly becoming one of the most used collaboration tools and is expected to overtake email as the preferred tool by 2016. But mass adoption does not happen unless it is made contextual to an end user’s preferred work style. Integrating collaboration technology, such as voice, video and content sharing tools into communication systems, business applications and workFlows will drive adoption. New technologies such as WebRTC, standards-‐based video, rich software development kits and a deeper understanding of uniFied communications applications, make this a reality. New industry-‐
speciFic solutions—particularly in healthcare, government, Financial services and retail—will increase the use and relevance of video this year.
The workspace itself will evolve
The workspace itself is changing signiFicantly. To reduce real estate space and related expenses, some companies are moving from rows of cubicles to more open workspaces and offering employees Flexible work arrangements. As a result, we expect workplace innovation from a distance to deFine the future of working. New technology innovations, like noise cancellation, lighting adjustments and digital white-‐boarding, will support this transformation. These technology innovations, coupled with a stronger desire for open collaboration, will render the current ofFice-‐based workspace obsolete. More emphasis will be placed on connecting to anywhere, from anywhere, at any time. The Age of ‘Supermobility’
In “Revolutionising the Future Workplace,” Jack Uldrich predicts smartphones will grow to 2.4 billion units by 2018—a ratio of 6:1 to PCs. In 2015, device-‐to-‐device communication will enable contextual-‐based collaboration. We are entering the age of “supermobility,” in which mobile devices will provide all of the tools and technology that employees need to be productive on the go, including voice, video and content collaboration solutions. This “supermobility,” which will include more use of near Field communications (NFC), Wi-‐Di, Ultrasonic and other wireless technologies, will give mobile device users easier and more secure access to an enterprise’s visual collaboration tools.
The SMB market will accelerate the use of cloud-‐based collaboration solutions
Fueled by the evolution of mobility and the cloud, subscription-‐
based services provide organisations with the ability to collaborate and achieve more. More than ever, large scale movement of small-‐ to medium-‐sized businesses (SMB) to cloud-‐based VoIP, video and content sharing services will grow. Traditional PSTN infrastructure is becoming outdated, and with a regulatory mandate to move all voice services off PSTN within the next Five years, cloud-‐based voice, video and content use will rise dramatically. New applications and capabilities that were previously hard to get in the traditional premise-‐based world will become much easier to deploy with these cloud-‐based collaboration services.
Browser-‐based collaboration solutions will become the tool of choice
Companies looking for simple and effective communications willturn to the web browser in 2015. Enabled by WebRTC, companies globally will come to depend more on the browser to perform communication functions within work streams. Simplicity will ultimately rule this change, as more businesses look to make © Dialog Marketing Services 2015 | www.rustreport.com.au | [email protected] Page 4 | January 19, 2015

will still require an enterprise solution. We believe 2016 will offer even greater adoption. Meetings as you know them are changing for the better
Meetings are changing because technology continues to foster new ways to communicate. Better quality and easier to use collaboration solutions are making it feel as natural as being there
—so users have a common experience regardless of their location or device. Video conferencing solutions also will easily connect to third-‐party audio services, such as Skype for Business (Microsoft Lync), increasing business-‐to-‐consumer (B2C) and business-‐to-‐
business (B2B) communications. Expect 2015 to be a signature year for advancement of collaboration tools around the globe. With work environments shifting from traditional to more advanced collaboration environments, more employees will look to their employers for Flexible yet productive “ofFices” to conduct work from wherever they choose. Video collaboration is eliminating the distance between locations and the barriers to communication with as good as being there experiences. The workplace is changing for the better, and we expect visual communications to be one of the biggest catalysts in next generation team collaboration.

Peter O'Connor, VP APAC and Japan, Nimble Storage
VIP TOLD ME
Please provide a brief overview of the company? Nimble Storage is a global provider of disruptive data storage solutions that offer our customers and service providers unprecedented value. Our industry leading price performance arrays drive data efFiciency improvements, operational simplicity and aggressive ROI outcomes for all users. Nimble was founded in January 2008 and to date has installed more than 7000 arrays across more than countries through 1500 partners. In December 2013 Nimble Storage successfully listed on the NYSE and now employees over 800 staff including 30 staff in Australia and New Zealand. Peter O'Connor
What sets the company apart from your competitors? have now chosen Nimble as their storage platform. Who are typical prospects/customers?
Our customers are from all industry verticals as we typically target workloads such as Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, SQL, VMware virtualised environments, Oracle, SAP, Splunk, and VDI (Citrix and Vmware) etc. Now, with added Fibre Channel capability our addressable market is four times larger than when we were solely an iSCSi array. This also means access to larger enterprise customers many of whom are FC users. When talking to customers/prospects what things are top of their agenda’s today? Quickly going are the days of purchasing years of storage in advance. Many larger customers have a preference for paying as they consume or Opex versus Capex. This is why Nimble recently announced ‘Storage on Demand’ for service providers and enterprise customers. This model means Nimble owns the asset and rents to the customer under a capacity consumption model.
Migration is almost a thing of the past in a heavily virtualised market like Australia. These days it’s all about ease or use, power consumption, data centre space, support and performance. Cloud adoption is a popular topic of conversation but so far only less critical workloads or archived data is moving.
What are the company’s greatest challenges right now? Nimble can store more data in a smaller footprint than traditional storage vendors can by using a combination of SSD and affordable NL-‐SAS drives more efFiciently. Our products offer users sub one millisecond latency for both reads and writes, are very easy to conFigure, install, and operate while using less power. Annual data growth rates of 40-‐50% plus increased reliance on colocation facilities means affordable efFicient storage is imperative. Being able to supply customers solutions that can reduce operational resources, power usage, data centre space and increase productivity is key. We have no software charges and can scale capacity, cache and controllers plus update Firmware releases and add additional nodes all non-‐disruptively. This ensures the highest levels of availability which is why more than 435 service providers We would like to have wider channel coverage so we can contest a larger volume of opportunities. We know if we have the good fortune to be invited to compete Nimble will win the majority of the time as our value proposition cannot be matched. The larger the opportunity the greater the gap there is in value differentiation between us the competition. So building relationships with key partners who serve the enterprise market is just as important as building a loyal reseller community to service the SME and mid-‐
market. Finally I’d say that we have attracted and hired some great people into Nimble. We need to ensure our past hiring standards are maintained as we continue to grow at this current rate. © Dialog Marketing Services 2015 | www.rustreport.com.au | [email protected] Page 7 | January 19, 2015
And opportunities?
The opportunity is truly great. Having a purpose built model File system provides an unfair advantage over 20-‐30 year old disk bound File systems from major competitors including EMC and NetApp. It’s very difFicult for these products to be competitive against a File system that was purpose written in modern times for high performing multicore CPU’s and Flash. We anticipate the trend of replacing more of these older systems to accelerate. What are the core messages you want the marketplace to know about your company? Nimble has an extensive evaluation / trial program. Just ask for a no commitment test of our product and the results will surprise those that try. Nimble has an amazing proactive support service of which much is automated. If I surveyed our hundreds of Australian customers today what they like best about Nimble the majority of times the answer would be the support. Most customers have never experienced anything like it from any vendor in IT net alone storage. Our customer satisfaction drives everything. If customers are considering ‘all Flash arrays’ then take a look at Nimble as our hybrid systems are outperforming all competitors for a fraction of the price. NICE Systems launches Contact
Centre Fraud Prevention
NICE Systems has launched its Contact Centre Fraud Prevention solution, which tracks fraud patterns and screens all phone interactions for fraud against a watch list of known fraudsters. The solution brings together NICE Actimize’s extensive expertise in fraud with NICE’s years of experience in the contact centre. The solution can be deployed as a standalone contact centre solution or as part of the NICE Actimize enterprise fraud offering. The solution enables businesses to pinpoint fraudulent callers according to their unique voice print by using voice biometrics to automatically cross-‐reference each call with a suspicious watch list of known fraudsters. It also implements NICE Interaction Analytics to identify fraud patterns and social engineering attempts based on speech analytics, emotion detection, talk patterns, and interactions. For example, shouting at the agent or trying to change an address or phone number could be part of a fraudulent behaviour pattern, and certain keywords may raise a red Flag. Telephony and other contextual data, such as IVR events, caller location and ANI matching, also known as caller ID, are also examined to determine potential fraud. Centrify opens app gateway for
remote access to web apps
UniFied identity management company Centrify has launched an app gateway for its Centrify User Suite that securely delivers remote access to internal web applications without the hassle or risk of a VPN. Available immediately in Australia and globally, Centrify’s new capability changes the game by dramatically simplifying access to internal apps. By clicking on a shortcut in their Centrify portal, users can immediately access their favorite apps, using a single sign-‐on (SSO), just like with all their external SaaS apps. The Centrify app gateway also lets users, including partners and suppliers, securely access corporate resources from any device, including smartphones, tablets and personal computers. Security is another key component of the Centrify app gateway. It is safer than a VPN because the user is granted access to only the target app and not the rest of the network. Another beneFit of the Centrify app gateway is that on-‐premises apps such as Microsoft Sharepoint can now be as securely accessed as SaaS apps leveraging all of http://www.novatechventures.com http://www.novatechventures.com http://
