The race is on!
RUST BUCKET
Len Rust
Driven by a combination of consumer demand and the development of new products and services, the ICT world is rapidly transforming. Everybody is worried about another disruptive technology suddenly popping up. The CEOs of large IT companies must have a greater awareness and vigilance these days when it comes to ferreting out breakthrough technologies. They must look far and wide for the next disruptive technology before it takes away their market share.
Today almost every major company has a toe in the cloud and big data sector. There has also been a series of acquisitions and new partnerships which clearly illustrates how the competitive landscape in the tech industry and beyond is being fundamentally changed by the evolving the cloud and data phenomenon.
Big data has got everybody’s attention with many of the smaller vendors growing at 50% or so a year. Big Data has grown from being a highly touted category and over hyped technology and several companies have now built leadership positions in mission critical opportunity areas. Flexibility in the Cloud has also become not just a core beneFit, not just from cost savings but how it allows for improved business agility and the faster development of new applications. The ongoing price wars between the major cloud platform vendors will continue as they lower the cost of their services in an effort to entice more customers to their ecosystems.
Several of the industry leaders are now facing new competitive challenges that they have never experienced before. They now also have an increasingly urgent need to be leaner and more efFicient to seek and seize new opportunities and at the same time to build their bench strengths. This means in many cases also asking their leaders worldwide to think entirely differently, not only about their current situations, but how their getting their numbers and deFining what “results” will be like twelve months on!
Welcome to the Rust Report. In this week’s Industry
Player Profile video we talk to Dr Terry Percival,
Director Broadband and the Digital Economy, NICTA.
View the interview in a new window here.
The real challenge is that many leaders today are not prepared through their education or experience for the roles and demands of today, roles that require them to think strategically (quicker) and to drive the market rather than just reacting to it.
The IT business over the years has continually been called a “rat race”, a suitable euphemism because to survive the business challenges one has to stay ahead of the competition. There are several ways of doing this: become lean and fast, have a good nose for proFits and develop and maintain a strong market position. Also to rely on instinct and cunning or continually streamlining company operations, updating and upgrading business procedures, marketing and branding and still leave room for expansion and adaption to new market sectors.
The traditional sectors of the ICT ecosystem whose members include enterprise service providers and the purveyors of internet services and social media are all blurring and converging. Change has been with us, seemingly forever. This is very clear today, certainly both in business and technology and especially so when it comes to the critical area of beneFicial business application delivery. Application delivery is a value stream that starts with an idea or problem to solve and ends when customers are able to beneFit from a solution. To be more successful, businesses will have to become more agile, Flexible and dynamic than ever. Creativity will unleash many new ideas and technologies that will help put those ideas into organised and effective action. We used to say “the sky’s the limit’” but we now have to go a lot further.

The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) has reported for the First time on NBN-‐related complaints in its Annual Report, released last week. Consumers made 3,982 new NBN-‐related complaints during the 2013-‐14 Financial year. Most were about new connection delays, with 1,122 internet users and 783 landline consumers reporting a delay. More than 500 consumers complained about missed appointments. “Complaints increased every quarter over the Financial year. This is predictable given an increased roll-‐out of the National Broadband Network,” Ombudsman Simon Cohen said. “A theme in these complaints has been communication breakdown, with consumers often reporting that they don’t know who to turn to solve their problem.” NBN-‐related complaints proved difFicult to resolve, with 800 conciliations and 98 investigations. More than 18 per cent of all TIO investigations concerned NBN-‐related complaints.
A new web and app-‐based well-‐being program will be evaluated in a group of Victorian schools, thanks to a grant from the Victorian Government Technology Innovation Fund to not-‐for-‐proFit organisation Smiling Mind. Smiling Mind delivers free web and app-‐based programs, with a speciFic focus on supporting resilience and emotional well-‐being in young people. Tools and strategies are provided to manage stress and everyday pressure and increase concentration levels, in a bid to prevent long-‐term mental illness. Minister for Technology Gordon Rich-‐Phillips made the announcement at Frankston Heights Primary School, emphasising the opportunities presented by new, highly-‐accessible technologies to support well-‐being in young people. “The project will trial and evaluate the online and application-‐

The vein visualisation devices are portable, and project an image of the veins onto the skin’s surface using non-‐invasive near infra-‐red technology. The Blood Service is aiming to Find out if this procedure reduces anxiety, improves donation comfort and makes donors more likely to donate again. The study will assess the responses of 300 First-‐time and 600 return donors aged between 18 and 30 attending the Chatswood and Elizabeth Street Donor Centres in Sydney. “Donor Centre staff have found the technology particularly useful in cases where the vein is not visible to the naked eye” said Dr Dan Waller, one of the senior investigators on the trial.
Telstra launches new health

Telstra has unveiled a new business division, Telstra Health, to target opportunities to offer integrated e-‐health systems – arguably following moves by Apple, Google and others to offer health information. The move also comes at the same time as the Australian Government's electronic heath record system has Floundered. Telstra retail group executive Gordon Ballantyne said Telstra wants to be the "partner of choice" to connect patients, healthcare workers, hospitals, pharmacies, government and health funds and build a "safer, more convenient way of managing health." Accenture Analytics' latest research into big data projects Finds Australian organisations are actively engaging in activities, yet aren't as satisFied or as strategic as their global counterparts in its value. Australian organisations are overwhelmingly satisFied with their big data activities, yet are lagging behind international counterparts when it comes to seeing data as a signiFicant source of value, a new report claims. The Accenture Analytics Big Success with Big Data report found 78 per cent of Australian executives surveyed are either ‘very satisFied’ or ‘satisFied’ with their results from applying big data to their business, and 70 per cent rated big data as ‘very important’ or ‘important’ to their businesses’ digital transformation. However, both of these lagged behind the global survey results of 92 per cent and 89 per cent, respectively, Accenture stated. In addition, 94 per cent of global respondents reported that their implementation is meeting their needs, and 94 per cent said big data is being used to identify new sources of revenue. Among the top uses cases in Australia are identifying new sources of revenue (86 per cent), retaining and acquiring customers (80 per cent) and developing new products and services (80 per cent).

The most successful API projects take what I call a “design-‐First” approach. Fundamentally, design-‐

audience. Before writing any code, think about the people who will use your API. Ask yourself: “Am I creating an experience that will attract a community, inspire engagement and provide value?” Most of all, “Would I want to develop with this API?”
Here’s how to make sure you can answer yes to those questions.
Design for consistency
Planning too little is dangerous. But so is planning too much. This isn’t a science experiment to Find the ideal design. Perfection isn’t the goal: consistency is.
Do your users a favour and settle on well-‐deFined patterns and common design elements you’ll use again and again as your application evolves. If you have two teams building two APIs for your software, users shouldn’t be able to detect any difference.
Design for scale
Your API needs to be built to last, but planning for growth can be tricky. You can’t invest too much in scalability until you generate the trafFic. But you need to invest enough to grow without affecting your users. It’s a delicate balance.
The easiest solution is to publish your APIs on a cloud platform, where scalability is built in. That way, if you get spikes in activity, your service won’t crumble under the load.
You also need to choose your API management platform carefully. It can’t be an afterthought. It’s a powerful tool to ensure that all your users have a good experience. It allows you to prescribe in great detail how you API will be accessed. It provides a safe, secure experience for end users, and gives you visibility into how the API is being accessed. It’s Mission Control for your API, and you can’t neglect it.
Security should behave the same way. Versioning, URL schemes, API keys and error codes should look and work the same in all parts of your API. The same goes for querying and receiving data. These might seem like the basics, but they’re so rarely followed in practice

Revel Systems Australia forms
partnership with Deputy to
integrate staff management
software
Revel Systems Australia has announced a partnership with Deputy, a workforce management software company that enables easy employee scheduling in the cloud. Available now for local customers, the integration of Revel’s iPad Point of Sale platform with Deputy will provide businesses with data-‐driven insights to manage staff more effectively. Deputy software allows employers to schedule staff, assign tasks and track performance with ease while Revel’s cloud based system gives employers access to real time sales data which can be broken own hourly, daily and weekly, as well as by staff member. Overlaying Revel’s sales and performance analytics with Deputy’s scheduling data will enable employers to track rostering against sales data, allowing them to compare employee shift costs against performance in real-‐time. This enables managers to forecast employees’ labour costs against the percentage of expected sales to make better rostering decisions for their business lowering the risk of understafFing or overstafFing. “Businesses shouldn’t expose themselves to the cost and risk of over or under stafFing these days, particularly when huge data sets at their disposal to make more informed decisions,” said Josh Franklin, Revel Systems Australia General Manager. “We’re pleased to empower our customers with Deputy integration so they can access even more analytics to create and manage their rosters effectively. We are also excited about teaming up with an innovative Australian software company.”
MYOB invests in Acumatica
MYOB has announced a minority investment position in Washington-‐based Acumatica, the powerhouse provider of cloud-‐based enterprise resource planning (ERP) and Financial software with over 1, 000 installations of cloud ERP. The announcement follows a recent multi-‐million dollar agreement which allows MYOB to develop a localised cloud based ERP solution. The move reinforces MYOB’s commitment to building its cloud capability for mid-‐range, mid-‐market enterprises, further extending the company’s offering in this segment and beyond its already strong SME base. MYOB General Manager – Enterprise Division Andrew Birch says becoming a shareholder in Acumatica’s business was a natural progression following a successful year’s partnership. “Before partnering with Acumatica, we reviewed technology platforms around the world for the ideal solution that would enable us to extend our successful mid-‐market business into the online space,” says Mr Birch. “After working with the company and the platform for over a year, we have been impressed with the sophistication and functionality of the product.”

Vocus Communications selects
Brocade for next gen core
Vocus Communications (ASX:VOC) (Vocus), one of Australia’s fastest expanding communication and data center service providers, has successfully rolled out a next-‐generation core infrastructure to 43 points-‐of-‐presence in cities across Australia and New Zealand. Implemented by Brocade local partner, ASI Solutions, the deployment of Brocade® MLXe Series Core Routers gives Vocus more than a 16-‐fold increase in network capacity, enabling it to meet the requirements for enhanced data center performance and growing demand for cloud services. Vocus had already experienced the performance and reliability of Brocade Ethernet solutions implemented previously at its points-‐
of-‐presence locations. With fast-‐rising demand for 10 Gigabit per second Ethernet (GbE) services the option of deploying Brocade MLXe routers – which can also support 40 and 100 GbE – was an attractive choice. In addition to providing much greater scalability, industry-‐leading port density, and a path to 100 GbE, the Brocade MLXe reputation for non-‐stop reliability was also a signiFicant factor in Vocus’ decision to select Brocade. As well as the usual redundant power supplies and fans, the routers feature an advanced redundant switch fabric architecture that helps the system operate at peak performance even in the case of a switch fabric card failure.
