Neighbor Helping Neighbor Program
Thank you to the volunteers who lend a hand to our Satellite
Beach neighbors who need transportation, temporary light
housekeeping, occasional yard work, small handyman jobs,
shopping, etc. We are aggressively looking for additional
dispatchers and helpers to join our pool of volunteers, call
the Satellite Beach Rec. Dept., (321) 773-6458. If you need
transportation or other non-professional assistance, leave a
message at least 5 business days in advance, (321) 773-6458
and a dispatcher will return your call.
The Stop By & Say Hi Program is where our SB Police
Department volunteers literally do just that, and it’s free of
charge! We are there to provide laughter, brighten a day,
share city resources and let SB residents know that they are
not forgotten. There are no requirements to participate,
except that the recipients must live within the city limits of
Satellite Beach. They can be of any age or background, a
friend, family member, loved one, neighbor, or just someone
you know. They may simply be in need of companionship, be
lonely, be a caregiver, a shut in, a cancer patient or have just
lost a loved one. They may be feeling lonely or isolated due
to limitations, or have no immediate family living close by.
Referral forms are available at the SB Police Department,
City Hall, or online at www.satellitebeachfl.org

ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS
Restore Oyster Reefs in the Indian River Lagoon
Oyster mat-making workshops will be held at the David R.
Schechter Community Center, 1089 S. Patrick Dr., Satellite
Beach, overseen by the Brevard Zoo. Please join us on any of
these dates Jan 24, Feb 28, March 28, April 25 from
10-11:30am to work with Brevard Zoo staff to learn more
about this keystone species, help our Indian River Lagoon
and make oyster restoration mats. No RSVP is needed. All
ages and groups are welcome.
Oysters need help due to the number of threats they face
including overharvesting, habitat degradation, poor water
quality, disease, and boat wakes. Oysters are filter feeders
that improve water quality and clarity by filtering water –
one oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day! Oyster
reefs also stabilize shorelines and provide food and habitat
for many species of fish, birds, and invertebrates.
The Oyster Reef Restoration Project was started in 2005 by
Dr. Linda Walters of the University of Central Florida and has
been joined by Brevard Zoo. The oyster mats, constructed
from mesh and oyster shells, are placed in the Indian
River Lagoon to provide a natural substrate for oyster
larvae to settle. Results show that the
oyster mat restoration technique has
been very successful - after one year
in the water, an average of 97 new
oysters settled on each mat! But we
can’t do it without your help!
The DRS Community Center continues to serve as the hub
for recycling opportunities in Satellite Beach.
You can recycle these items at the DRS:
reading glasses -- greeting cards
box tops for education -- cell phones
tabs from soda cans -- ink cartridges
old wall calendars -- cardboard
new/used personal soap bars for underdeveloped countries
paperback books for soldiers
junk mail -- magazines -- newspapers
Does your organization participate in a unique recycling
program? Let us know what you are doing and perhaps we
can lend support by informing the community.
