ESKESEN
Arthur Hans Eskesen of Olds
passed away peacefully
at the Innisfail Hospital
on Thursday January
15, 2015 at the age of
95 years. Art was born
November 18, 1919
on the family farm near
Wauchope, Saskatchewan
(Section 16, Township 6,
Range 6,West of the 1st Meridian) to Thue
and Anna Eskesen who both emigrated to
Canada from Denmark. The family moved
from Wauchope to Durban Manitoba in 1934
and then Art, with the notion of “Go West
Young Man Go West”, came to Alberta in
1940. Following brief stints working on a
family farm near Drumheller, and in the army
as well, Art arrived in Sundre in 1942. At the
tender age of 23 years and with a real sense
of entrepreneurial spirit he started his own
sawmill business near Coal Camp. In 1946 the
family joined Art in Sundre and he expanded
the business, partnering with his brother Niels
to form Eskesen Bros. Sawmill. Art always
felt extremely fortunate for the conscientious
and hard working men employed in the
sawmill business and in return the men were
grateful to him for the employment. Many
life long friendships were formed in those
years. Art married Bertha Rodgers in 1947
and in 1956, when the sawmill business was
sold to the Mjolness brothers, the two of
them went into full-time farming in the Eagle
Hill Area on the Rogers family homestead.
Being community minded, Art found time
to serve as Municipal/County councillor
for two successive terms 1959 - 1961 while
Mountain View County transitioned from a
Municipality to a County district. In March
of 1989 Art and Bertha sold the farm and
retired into Olds where he has resided until
his passing. During his so-called retirement
years Art developed his wood working skills
and passed onto nieces and nephews many
bowls and furniture meticulously created with
a wood lathe. He also enjoyed time spent
panning for gold on his prospect property in
British Columbia and travelling and camping
extensively from Alaska to Texas with Bertha.
Art was predeceased by Bertha in September
1997. After a while on his own, he met and
married Maureen Coward in November 1999;
Maureen predeceased Art in April 2013. Art
is survived by his brother Niels’ children and
their families, David (Betty) Eskesen, Sharon
Kinney, Shirley (Kurt) Wentzell, Lyle (Anne)
Eskesen, Darlene Smee. Art will always be
remembered for his positive attitude and
approach to life and all it had to offer; he had
a wonderful sense of humour. He was an
honorable man and will be profoundly missed
by countless friends. Funeral services will be
held on Friday January 23, 2015 at 1:00 p.m.
at Faith Lutheran Church, Sundre with Pastor
Gary Aicken officiating. In lieu of flowers,
memorial tributes may be made in Art’s
memory to the Sundre Museum.
