Obituaries CONWAY Ruth Isabell Conway (nee Bennett) quietly passed away on January 18, 2015 in Drayton Valley, Alberta in her 88th year. Born April 22, 1926 at Mayton, Alberta, Ruth was raised, married and lived most of her life in the Mayton District. She attended Mayton School where one of her greatest pleasures was putting on the Christmas concerts and being in plays. She and her husband William (Bill) Conway (predeceased in 1966) worked hard on their farm where Ruth always had a large garden and tended her long row of pansies along the driveway. After Bill’s passing, Ruth continued to live on the farm and approached the future with courage, determination and a positive attitude. She was well known for her special occasion decorated cakes, her crafts, sewing anything she put her mind to making, and in particular, her quilts. Ruth diligently compiled scrapbooks documenting all the important family and community occasions from 1946 to 2009. Her creativity was also evident in the multitude of poems she wrote for family and community occasions and on other topics that inspired her in life. She published her first book of poems, “The Concert in the Hall and other Memories” in 1985 and her second book “Pansies and Poems Live On” in 2001. She was often requested to recite her poems at community events. Ruth was a longstanding member of the Betchton and Bowden United Church and served as Board secretary for 11 years and member of Session for 14 years, and secretary of the Betchton-Nisbet U.C.W. for many years. Ruth also loved music and singing the old time songs and hymns. After moving to Olds in 1998 she joined the Olds Hospital Singers and the Evergreen’s Choir. In 2012, Ruth moved to Evansburg, Alberta to be near family. She continued to recite poetry and exercise her wit and sense of humour on a regular basis during her years at the Sunshine Place Lodge. Ruth was dedicated to her family. She will be greatly missed by her children Irene (Bill Lawton), Joyce (John Fox) and Murray (Lisa Striker), eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Violet Gans, sisters in-law Marion Bennett and Lou Conway, brother in-law Al Burton, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her husband William (Bill Jr) in 1966, and by brothers Don, Ray, Charlie, and Lloyd (died at age five) and sisters Eileen Dalgetty, June Burton and infant sister Ila. Funeral services were held on Wednesday January 21, 2015 at the Olds United Church with Reverend Tammy Allan officiating. Interment followed in the Olds Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in celebration of Ruth’s life may contribute to the Bowden United Church Memorial Fund (P.O. Box 222, Bowden, AB TOM OKO). Obituaries Alexander Shayne Johnson Alexander Shayne Johnson passed away peacefully in his home January 19, 2015 at the age of 11 years, after a two year battle with a cancerous tumour in his brain stem. Born April 24, 2003, Alex was the youngest of four children born to Jack and Tammy Johnson. From his first moment at home, he was a joy to his parents and siblings, Emily, Sam, and Grace. With the addition of Alex, the family felt complete. Alex was gifted in many ways. He was intelligent, athletic and handsome but he will be forever remembered for the strength of his character. Alex was a peacemaker, with a kind heart and a calm manner. He had an incredible sense of humour; with a wit honed to a fine edge trying to compete as the youngest in a house full of characters. These traits, along with his unfailing positive attitude and courage to face any challenge without flinching, were with him until the very end, long after illness had taken his physical abilities. These are the things that even people who only knew Alex briefly will remember. Though he only had 11 years, Alex truly changed the lives of all who were lucky enough to know him. Alex was pre-deceased by his grandmother Ellen Johnson, aunt Bonnie Johnson, uncle Nick Parker, greataunt Maggie Cannady and second cousin Shayne Barca. Alex will be lovingly rememberd by his parents Jack and Tammy, his sisters Emily and Grace and brother Sam; grandfather Roy Johnson; grandparents Jerry and Cheryl Christman; greatgrandmother Vi Christman; uncles Jay Christman, Dave (Sue) Johnson, Ken Johnson; aunts Carol (Howard) Thornton, Peggy Johnson, Anne (Charlie) Feddema, Lorraine (John) Mikal, Norma (Greg) Fate. Alex created a world of wonderful memories playing with his seventeen cousins and four second cousins. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 5005 53 Avenue, Olds, Alberta, on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Brent Reilly officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Alex’s name to the Alberta Children’s Hospital or the Rotary Flames House in care of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, 2888 Shaganappi Trail NW Calgary, Alberta T3B 6A8.
