There is something sacred in all people. All people are equal before God. Religion is about the whole of life. We meet in stillness to discover a deeper sense of God’s presence. True religion leads to respect for the earth and all life upon it. Each person is unique, precious, a child of God. 801 New Garden Road Greensboro, NC 27410 Telephone: 336-292-5487 Website: www.ngfm.org E-mail addresses Office [email protected] RE Coordinator [email protected] YF Leadership [email protected] NEW GARDEN FRIENDS MEETING Established 1754 260 Years of Continuous Quaker Ministry and Presence in the New Garden / Greensboro Community 18th day, 1st month PLEASE ENTER THE MEETING IN WORSHIPFUL SILENCE Each item in the order of worship arises out of the silence, which encompasses the whole hour. As a Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), we value these quiet moments in the presence of the Divine Spirit and our gathered congregation. “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” Martin Luther King, Jr. WORSHIPFUL MUSIC WELCOME ANNOUNCEMENTS HYMN No. 279 READING Lift Every Voice and Sing Britain Faith & Practice Social Responsibility: 23.03 HG Wood, 1958 SPECIAL MUSIC “The Stranger of Galilee” by C. H. Morris Don Tickle WE GIVE GENEROUSLY TO SUPPORT THE BUDGET OF OUR MEETING MESSAGE Don Tickle “The strength to get up and do what needs to be done” “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.” MLK, Jr. COMMUNION AFTER THE MANNER OF FRIENDS After the planned message we enter into a period of worship that is based upon silent, expectant waiting. It is a distinctly Quaker form of worship. It is slightly different from meditation. This kind of worship (about 30 minutes) may be completely silent, or there may be those who are led to stand and speak. When we hear a speaker, regardless of whether we agree with what is said, or whether we understand what is being said, we hold that speaker in the LIGHT (pray for them) and consider that we may learn valuable lessons or be moved spiritually by what is being said. After the speaker finishes, we return to the silence and continue to worship expectantly. Early in the silence we may use our minds to think about words and music we have just heard, but hopefully we will get beyond the process of thinking to a place where the Divine Spirit leads and guides us into a deeper level of worship. GREETING AFTER THE MANNER OF FRIENDS Friends extend the hand of fellowship (or hugs) in recognition that we are all children of God. Curious about AFSC, NCYM, FCNL, and the rest of the Quaker alphabet soup? Looking for support in your efforts to live out the Quaker testimonies of peace, equality, simplicity, and integrity? Members of Ministry and Counsel will lead discussions about these and other topics in our (mostly) Annual Seekers Group series. Experienced Quakers, newcomers, and everyone in between are invited. Join us February 1, 8, 15, and 22, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Parlor. Child Care for Seekers Group: If you are attending the February Seekers Group and need child care, please let the office know the age of the child/children so we can be sure to have appropriate coverage. Calling All Runners/Spread the Word: HSYF will again be raising money for their spring trip by jointly running marathons (yep, that's 26.2 miles) on Sunday, February 8. The race director, Mike Clark of Junction 311, has generously agreed to allow our teams to pay only the shirt/medal fee, and then pay the registration fee to HSYF as a donation. If you would like to join us by running one or more laps (each lap is 1.6 miles), please call me. If you know anyone in the community who plans to run the race, please have them call me before registering so I can instruct them on how to register to insure that HSYF will receive their registration fee. Clean, gently used, warm clothing needed for a young lady Tuesday evening, I met a young lady who just turned 18 and is alone. Since preschool, she has faced verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse from family members. At age 15, her Mother’s car ran out of gas. With no driving experience, the child was expected to drive as her mother tried to push the car uphill. The car rolled over her mother; mother was in a coma for 6-8 weeks before dying. Family members blamed the child for her mother’s death. Tues. evening, 1-13-2015, this young lady arrived at the Interactive Resource Center. She was wearing all her possessions which consisted of only light clothing and thin flats. The young lady is about 5’6” and wears the following sizes: 36 D bra, 7-8 underwear, M-L shirt/sweater, 12 slacks, 10 shoes. Long underwear, coat, hat, scarf, gloves/mittens, socks, brush, comb, toiletries, water bottle, etc. also needed. Green is her favorite color. A luggage cart on wheels would be helpful. Clean, gently used, above items may be left in the “Kicks for Kids” bin in Drivers needed to help with weekly trip to Randleman to drop off recyclable Styrofoam. Styrofoam is picked up at New Garden and also at Friends Home Guilford. The trip to Dart Container in Randleman takes about 30 minutes (one way) from New Garden. Even if you can only drive occasionally, we would appreciate having the help! If you can help, please contact:Happy Rieth at 314-0494 or ([email protected]) Environmental Stewardship Greensboro (ESG) is hosting a discussion with members of Guilford County’s delegation to the NC General Assembly to explore key environmental issues coming before the legislature in the 2015 session. January 18, 2015, 2:00 pm People of faith who care deeply about the Earth will want to keep in touch with our legislators on many issues this year. What do members of our delegation expect to be the key environmental topics in 2015? Will renewable energy standards be terminated or expanded? Will coal ash ponds need more protection? Will solar energy incentives continue? Will fracking rules provide enough protection for communities and groundwater? Please join in this discussion to learn our delegation’s perspectives and to inform our delegation about our stewardship passions on January 18.
