Association Scholarship. A short essay about your career goals
and 2 letters of reference are required. Deadline is April 1.

To the following student-athletes for their
performance this past Saturday at the Royal Valley powerlifting
meet. Congratulations goes out to Michelle Wahl, Hunter Loewen,
Tyson Loewen, Monte Swann, Michael Bryan, Cody Wilson, Nelson
Neuberger, Jakob Katzenberg, and Elijah Darey.
Wahl finished 3rd overall in her division; Katzenberg finished
finish 2nd overall; Tyson Loewen finished 2nd in bench, Swann
finished 2nd in bench; Swann finished 2nd in clean. Wilson lifted
new PRs in both squat and clean. Great job to everyone who
competed! Our next meet will be Saturday, January 31st when
the powerlifting team travels to Basehor-Linwood. Please come
out and support the Red Raider Powerlifting team. Thanks!
Congratulations: To the Wrestling team they placed 1st at the St. Mary’s Invitation this past weekend. Individual performances included: Dylan Bloom – 1st Place, Angel Negron – 1st Place, Reece Warren – 1st Place, Alec Pierson – 2nd Place, Dalton Carley – 1st Place,

be delivered to SIP's on February 13th.

The Wamego Middle School PTO is, for the first
time, selling pies from the Carriage Crossing in Yoder, KS. The
pies are homemade, fresh the day before delivery. They are
delivering in time for Valentine’s Day!

Clothes Drive Please consider donating your gently worn
clothing to the Youth Juvenile Services of Pottawatomie county to
benefit local children in foster care. We do not accept clothing
that is ripped or stained but will accept clothes of any size. There
are two boxes around school to place your clothes in.

volunteering their time to help you complete your FAFSA. There
are 23 locations across the state. Closest to Wamego are
Manhattan High School, Washburn University, and Salina Area

Scholarship Opportunity: The Kansas Association of
Directors of Plant Facilities promotes bringing the buildings and
grounds profession to a greater height of knowledge and
professionalism and has established a scholarship fund and will
award three $1,000 academic scholarships and one $1,000
technical scholarship to qualifying students. These scholarships
are available only to graduating seniors of non-instructional
support staff who wish to continue their education at the college
level. The students must be residents of Kansas and graduate
from a Kansas High School and plan to attend a Kansas College
or technical school. Only children whose parent or legal guardian
is actively employed in a K-12 or secondary education institution
and engaged in a buildings and grounds, food service or
transportation position shall be eligible for these scholarships and
it is the responsibility of the school to submit their best
applications for competition. It is again time for KADPF
Scholarship applications. Applications are located on our website.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Part time job for a Wamego
business - Must be 16 and able to work after school and
Saturdays. Sign up in the guidance office.
Local person needing someone to stay overnight to help care for
an elderly parent as needed throughout the night. This is
Thursday night from 9:30pm until 8 or 8:30am Friday morning.
Person needs to be dependable, caring, trustworthy, and willing
to learn the job. C.N.A. license is not required, but is a plus. Pay
is $9.60. Sign up in the guidance office if interested.
Senior Baby Ads: Every year, families of seniors can
purchase a baby ad for $35.00 . If you are interested in this,
please e-mail a baby photo along with a message to WHS
Yearbook, via Mrs. Thierolf. All proceeds go to furthering the
needs of yearbook.

Congratulation Cody Reeves,
This week’s Remarkable Raider! He is a 4th grader in Mrs
Woodyard’s class.
I would like to nominate Cody Reeves for Remarkable Raider.
Cody is a kind, caring person who is patient and accepting of
others. He knows the expectations and strives to exceed them.
For example, when I raise my hand to get the class’s attention,
he is usually the first with his hand up. He strives to be his best
by giving his best and presenting only acceptable behaviors. He
never needs to be reminded of expectations. He participates in
class discussions, sharing his thoughts to help others. Cody’s
kindness and respect for others is demonstrated with him saying
please and thank you for everything. His quiet unassuming
manner is an asset that doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you Cody for
being a positive role model for our class. You are definitely a
Remarkable Raider.

G.E.M. (Going the Extra Mile) Award
Congratulations Lori Rice, January’s G.E.M. Award Recipient.
1. When I first met Lori, it was 1997 and she was barely into her first year as a teacher at
Central Elementary. She started off as a Reading Specialist, but then moved into her dream
job as a first grade teacher. I always enjoyed working in Lori’s room because she was the
teacher that I had decided to become…the one that thought outside the box. It was because
of Lori (and other teachers at Central) that I even decided that I wanted to become a
teacher. I specifically remember one day when I was conducting a separate reading group
with some students in her room that a child from my group went over to ask her a question
(she was conducting her own reading group) and she replied to the student, “You need to
ask your reading teacher…she’s smart, she knows the answer.” Believe it or not, no one had
ever called me smart before until that day. It blew me away. She said I was smart! She told
her students those same types of positive, encouraging things all the time. Since then I
have grown into my own career and watched her grow in hers. I completely try to emulate
her in every way as a teacher. If I ever want to know what research best supports what
type of teaching/learning skills, I just ask Mrs. Rice, she knows. In fact, she’s one of the few
people I trust to give me up-to-date, researched based information on anything educational.
Lori does not accept sitting at a desk all day having her students memorize facts and
figures, she gets kids up, gets them moving and guides them to understand the “why”. If
you’ve ever been in her room for any length of time you will observe many things, like
reading nooks, math centers, discovery zones and more, but you’ll also hear her guide her
students towards the answer. She’s a complete master at answering a question in such a
way that the child “gets” to the answer themselves. She is a champion at developing critical
thinking skills in her students.
The GEM award is given to those teachers that go above and beyond the call of duty and I
cannot think of anyone that does that more than Lori Rice. Not only does she go above and
beyond inside her classroom, she does outside the classroom as well. Last year she initiated
the group “Becoming Girls,” an organization that helps girls discover who they were meant
to be. She power-houses summer workshops/programs that span subjects such as reading,
math and science. She’s been a pivotal leader in her grade level and her school district for
seventeen years. I can’t even begin to count the amount of workshops in which she has
been asked to be the key-note speaker, all while traveling to various parts of the state to do
so. She’s a lead writer for the online publication, “The Educator’s Room,” has contributed
numerous chapters to an educational book called, Keep the Fire Burning – Avoiding Teacher
Burnout, helped lead the PTO for her son’s school, been a children’s Bible study leader at
her church, has been her own children’s room mother, and many, many, many other things.
There simply isn’t enough space to write all of the wonderful things Lori has done for our
community and the school that she works for. In my mind, if anyone deserves the GEM
award, it is Lori Rice
#2 “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more,
you are a leader.” (John Quincy Adams) This quote sums up the impact that Lori Rice has
had on my life as a friend and educator. Lori Rice is one of those amazing, dynamo people
that never seem to run out of energy or passion. She is an inspiration to me. Lori is a
talented educator, collaborator, coworker, and friend. The amount of passion, energy, and
love that she puts into our district should be acknowledged and celebrated. Lori has been a
teacher in our district since 1996. She taught 2 years of kindergarten and 12 years of first
grade. She has been at West Elementary for 5 years now. Although she has been a teacher
for almost 20 years, she still has the passion and energy of a first year teacher. She truly
believes in the power of education and is constantly looking for ways to engage our students
in meaningful ways. Her classroom is a joy to be in and the learning that takes place is
inspirational. Lori puts in extensive hours outside of school to make sure that her students
have a meaningful education. Lori spends an outstanding amount of time breaking down the
new common core standards and determining how they can be effectively used in a 4th
grade classroom. She is constantly developing games, ideas, resources, and guides to share
with the rest of her colleagues. Lori not only has a blog that parents can access to keep
track of their student’s education, she also has a Facebook page that she updates
throughout the day. Parents are given ideas for games, sites, tools, and strategies for
working with their children at home. I had the honor of attending parent teacher
conferences with Lori and it was so evident how much the parents of her students
appreciated her. It was clear that Lori knows her students very well and that she values
them as creative, caring, diverse beings with so much to offer. She knows the quirks about
all her students and she celebrates those quirks. Lori’s classroom is an inviting, welcoming,
and safe place for students, especially students with disabilities. Lori’s high expectations and
diverse way of teaching help her to engage even the toughest kid.
Lori does so much for students outside of the school day as well. Lori helped start Becoming
Girls, an organization to develop self-esteem in young girls. She helped start this program
in Wamego last January and plans to run the program again Jan. 2015-May 2015. She is
the leader and organized 16+ adults as well as 92 girls in a once a month after school
activity. Lori also helps run Robotics club. Robotics club is a program for fifth grade students
to explore robotics and coding. In addition, Lori brought Camp Invention to Wamego 3
summers ago. Camp Invention is a national program focusing on STEM learning. She is the
director of Camp invention and she helps oversee staff, HS leaders and MS volunteers along
with 80 students for one week in the summer.
Lori not only provides a meaningful education for the students of Wamego USD 320, she
consults, blogs, and presents for educators all over Kansas. Lori is a Kansas Council for
Social Studies board member. She writes weekly for an online educator magazine called The
Educator’s Room. She writes articles on curriculum, instruction, technology, classroom
management, assessment, and differentiated instruction. She has published “Avoiding
Teacher Burnout” as part of a group and she has a second book about reading being
published this winter. She has presented at many conferences. The latest was to consult at
Ottawa USD 290. She represented our district to present at National Core Knowledge
Conferences, Bureau of Educational Research Conferences, and National Reading
Association Conferences. She has been on the technology committee since 2005 and has
provided countless in-services on technology integration and differentiated instruction. Her
expertise is sought out through the state and across the country.
Lori is not just an outstanding teacher and presenter. She is also an amazing friend and
coworker. “What do you need from me? How can I help you?” Those are the words I hear
every single day from Lori. What is even more meaningful than the words is the spirit and
attitude behind it. She truly cares about her coworkers and she wants to help in any way
she can. Lori is the first to donate a few dollars, plan an outing, or just listen to a fellow
teacher and offer an idea, support, or just a hug. She is one of those true, rare, people that
have a heart for others.
We are so blessed to have Lori Rice in our school district. She constantly goes the extra mile
for her students, community, coworkers, and her team. It is evident that teaching is more
than just a job to Lori Rice. It is her calling and I, for one, and so thankful that this is what
she was called to do. In the words of John Quincy Adams, “If your actions inspire others to
dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” Lori Rice is
definitely a leader in the Wamego School District.
#3 Although I no longer work at West Elementary due to my family moving to West
Virginia, I had the wonderful pleasure of working with Lori Rice for 3 years at West. I am
nominating her for the GEM award for many reasons. I would like to speak first as a parent.
Both of my girls were blessed to have Lori as their reading teacher. What a gift it was! To
this day, my oldest tells me Mrs. Rice was her favorite reading teacher because "She
challenged me. She trusted me with mature books that spoke to me." My youngest has said
repeatedly, "Mrs. Rice treated us like PEOPLE, not little kids. She respected us." Wow. If
that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does. For me, the entire point of teaching is
reaching the kids....so there you go! As a fellow teacher, I can NOT say enough good things
about Lori...but here is the deal...that is NOT what Lori wants. Has she won many awards?
You bet ya! Has she received multiple honors? Yes ma'am. The thing is, you will never hear
Lori brag or fixate on these things. She feels her job is to teach kids. And BOY does she.
Lori and I shared several students over the years as I was the inclusion teacher. When class
rolls were given out, I prayed my kids would get Lori because she was so GOOD for them!
She would accommodate them, but gently challenge and push them, making them feel in
control of their own learning and successful...THIS IS KEY!! Lori Rice is not in the business
of teaching for the accolades or the spotlight. She is there to teach and REACH kids!! And
she does! If you want your child to have a "minion" teacher that is cookie cutter, then Lori
is NOT the teacher for you. But if you want your child to have a creative, innovative,
student-driven teacher, then you desire her!!! On a personal level, Lori is one of a kind. Just
like in teaching, she NEVER pus herself first. She is always about OTHERS. Lori has a way of
speaking kind words just when you need them, putting her own time aside to check on you
and how YOU are doing, and she even can slap you back into reality when you need it. I
know Lori, and even reading these words would probably embarrass her. She does not like
to be in the spotlight or take all the glory. She is a total and complete TEAM player. But I
would like her to not be overlooked and be celebrated by receiving the GEM award. I've
always appreciated and loved Lori as a co worker, friend, and teacher of my own children,
but now, living away, I appreciate everything about her even more.
