YOU SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT NEELIN PLAY IF YOU COULD

the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr., who, before his 19th birthday, successfully conned millions of dollars' worth of cheques

Soft-hearted pet lovers vulnerable to scams
It’s hard to profile a typical animal
lover. More than 60 per cent of
Canadian households include a pet,
and most of these households see
their pets as a part of the family.
Regardless of what’s on the
outside, most pet lovers melt when
the topic of the discussion is
animals. And playing on this softhearted side of animal people is
what makes them especially
attractive to scammers.
A recent scam in the Swan River
area involved our two local animal
rescue organizations. An individual
placed an advertisement in the
classifieds section on a community
website claiming Funds for Furry
Friends and the Humane Society
are looking for small breed dogs and
puppies. She offers to pick up pets
if needed, and when contacted
stresses her role is simply
transportation to a safe location.
This
was
a
fraudulent
advertisement, as this individual is
not known to either rescue group,
and upon further investigation it
was determined she is not known
to any rescue group in Manitoba.
While this particular case is still
underway, it is not the only one of
its kind. Many animal lovers want
to rescue a pet, and what better way
to sell a dog or puppy than by
claiming it has been rescued, or
using the name of a legitimate
rescue group?
Please remember that legitimate
animal rescues do not place
advertisements looking for animals,
and they do not send people out to
collect dogs and transport them
either.
Animal rescues also have a finite
amount of space and animals can’t
just be dropped off at random —
planning is required.
Dana Grove
PET’S BEST
FRIEND
Dana Grove is an animal lover who
works with several pet organizations
in Brandon.
» [email protected]
If you are ever approached by
someone claiming to take pets for
rescue, call the organization and
confirm they are legitimate. If
someone offers to take your pet and
claims to be a private rescuer, ask
what vet clinic they use and call
them to confirm that the person is
on the level.
Here are a few other pet-related
scams
involving
classifieds
advertisements….
THE SHIPPING SCAM:
This scam has had many victims
— and I personally know several
people who were taken by this one.
The seller posts a classified
advertisement for a popular and
expensive breed — you might see a
Yorkshire terrier, an English
bulldog, a Persian or a Macaw listed
for a really good price. The seller,
of course, only wants to find the pet
a good home, thus the reason the
price is lower.
After some discussion, you learn
the pet is at a distance but the seller
is willing to ship him. The rate is
reasonable, and you can wire
transfer the money.
Once you get started, the seller
will continually be in contact, asking
for more and more each time as the
“issue” with the transport arises —
from purchasing a special crate or
carrier, to paying for needed vetting,
permits, duty, and other travelrelated expenses. Some have been
taken for thousands before they
realize there is no pet for sale.
Beware when purchasing a pet
sight unseen at a distance. Animals
should always be health checked
before travelling a distance, and
asking for the name of the clinic that
has examined the pet you are
purchasing is one way to check.
(Ask for the name of the clinic and
not a phone number, so you can
look up the number and call the
business directly.)
THE MIXED PUREBRED SCAM:
Another scam involves collecting
unwanted puppies and reselling
them as purebred dogs to make a
profit. If you are told a dog is
purebred, registration papers should
be provided.
A common part of this scam
involves a story about paperwork
being delayed in the mail — the
seller offers to send them in the mail
later. After you pay top dollars for
your dog, the sale is final and the
seller is never heard from again.
Another variation of this scam
involves showing parents (not
necessarily always the parents of the
pups) and explaining that the
parents are registered but the pups
aren’t yet. Delays range from
mailing issues to claims you must
send registration paperwork in later
— after all, once you have paid and
taken your pet home, there is little
that can be done.
Dogs without paperwork are not
purebred. Legitimate registered
breeders will not sell puppies early
and eight weeks is more than
enough time to get the registration
paperwork for the people
purchasing the puppies.
FOUND PET RANSOM SCAM:
When a pet goes missing, some
pet owners offer a reward with the
hope that the financial incentive will
help get their pet home more
quickly. Unfortunately, offering a
reward also gives scammers a little
incentive.
One version of this scam involves
a caller falsely claiming to have
found the lost pet, but refusing to
return him until they receive the
cash reward.
Another variation is for a person
to call claiming to have found your
pet injured. The scammer then
insists you wire money to cover the
medical care that was paid for
before returning your pet.
This is another reason why
identification for your pet is so
important. Not only can it help get
your pet home, a tattoo number can
be used to verify that the found dog
really belongs to you.
These are just a few examples of
scams appearing in the classifies
listings online. It is important to
remember that if something appears
to be too good to be true, it probably
is.
The best way to protect yourself
from scammers online is to do your
homework — and if something
doesn’t add up, walk away. It only
takes a minute to check, and it could
save you a lot of time, money and
heartache down the road!

CITY OF BRANDON ZONING BY-LAW
OPEN HOUSE
The City of Brandon Planning & Building Safety Department
is holding an open house to present the proposed changes to the
Zoning By-law and to seek feedback from the public.
When you encourage your child to read, you
are providing a wide variety of benefits.
l Reading develops imagination. Unlike TV
viewing, books give your child the opportunity
to visualize for herself the characters, scenes
and actions in the story.
l Reading a variety of books builds your
child’s vocabulary as he learns new words and
phrases in the context of the story.
l As your child gathers information through
books, she is storing a knowledge base that she
will continue to build on through further
reading as well as her own experiences.
l Children who are competent readers tend
to do well in other school subjects.
l Reading builds empathy as your child
relates to the characters in the story.
As with any other skill, reading improves
with practice, so give your child many
opportunities to read. Here are some tips to
raise a reader:
l Start early. Read and sing to your baby,
and look at picture books together. Give your
baby sturdy board books to explore.
l Talk to your preschooler about the pictures
and concepts in the books you read together.
l As your child begins to read on his own,
let him choose material that interests him. This
may include comic books or magazines, or rereading the same book numerous times.
l When your child finds a book she
especially enjoys, look for other books by the
same author, in the same series if possible.
l Ask your child’s assistance in reading
recipes, instructions, road signs or
advertisements.
l Make reading part of your child’s bedtime
routine. Read stories to young children, and
continue to read aloud to older children while
also giving them some time to read on their
own at the end of the day.
l Visit the library regularly and browse
through bookstores.
l Let your child see you reading for pleasure.
Instead of watching TV together in the evening,
set aside 30 minutes for family reading.
l Reading books that are easy and familiar
can build your child’s confidence. Ask him to
read an old favourite to you or a younger
sibling.
l Limit screen time, for your child and
yourself.
l Help your child associate reading with fun
and learning, rather than thinking of it simply
as homework.
Make reading a part of everyday life in your
home, and watch your child reap the benefits
as she builds her skills as a confident reader.

Buri team one for the 7 Ages
Frank McGwire
HAPPENINGS
ON THE SCENE
Frank McGwire is a veteran of the
local radio industry, a musician and
booster of the music scene in Brandon and Westman.
» [email protected]
It’s been nearly two decades
since George Buri and his wife
Trish decided to start up the
local theatre group known as
7 Ages Productions.
As the years pass by, the
steady stream of popular stage
production continues as their
labour of love shows no signs
of diminishing.
Approximately four years
ago I had the distinct pleasure
of enjoying the 7 Ages
experience firsthand as I was
cast in the “Buddy Holly
Story.” It was an experience I’ll
never forget.
Fortunately it was well
received as we had capacity to
near
capacity
crowds
throughout our four-show run.
To this day, people still remind
me of that show and how
much they enjoyed it.
The Buris are masters at
building a team attitude and
approach to their major stage
productions — they always
create a family-like community
spirit with every cast and crew
they work with. This is clearly
evident with every player’s
performance throughout each
major production 7 Ages takes
to the stage.
On the eve of yet another
major stage production,
director George Buri took
some time out of his extremely
busy schedule to play 20
Questions.
Exactly how many years
have you been running 7
Ages?
I have been running 7 Ages
for 18 years, since 1997.
When did you decide to
start your own theatre group?
I decided to form the theatre
group out of a request to do a
play for a particular function.
At the time, there weren’t any
other community groups
actively
functioning
in
Brandon. We started up, did
the play and kept on going.
How did you first get
involved
with
theatre
productions? Can you give us
a general overview of your
early years?
My first involvement with
theatre was as a child in
Winnipeg attending plays at
MTC and Rainbow Stage. I got
involved in high school and
continued at university. Trish
and I actually met at the U of
M because we were cast in the
same play, “The Canterville
Ghost.” We moved to Brandon
in 1969 and while I was going
to BU we got involved in a new
community theatre group
called Dimension Drama. We
did a number of plays both at
the WMCA and the Evans
Theatre. We moved away and
I kept doing high school drama
productions in Gilbert Plains
and Grandview. We moved
back to Brandon in 1976 and I
did high school shows in
Brandon until my retirement
in 2003.
How
many
major
productions do you take to the
stage each year?
For the first four years, 7
Ages did one show a year, then
we expanded to two and three
and in some years four. We
also do murder mysteries,
musical revues and different
plays for special occasions and
groups. Right now, we are
doing two shows a year, and
also hosting the touring Royal
Manitoba Theatre Centre
show. How many shows we do
a year depends on different
factors.
How do you decide which
major
productions
to
replicate?
I like to choose shows that
firstly are really good quality
plays. I like to do plays that
have not been done in Brandon
recently, where possible. I am
always looking for something
interesting that hasn’t been
done here before. That is why
we were among the first in
Manitoba to do Buddy Holly,
and “A Closer Walk With
Patsy Cline,” and “Always
Patsy Cline,” and I believe we
were one of the first to do “The
Producers.” I have to really like
the show before doing it as
well. Also we look for shows
the audiences will like and we
look for variety, musical,
drama, Shakespeare, comedy,
etc.
Seymour Hoffman, Brian
Dennehy, Al Waxman, and
David Suchet. My favourite
stage actresses that I have seen
are Vanessa Redgrave, Martha
Henry, and Seanna McKenna.
FROM THE DESK OF TRISH BURI ...
Who is your favourite
actor?
My favourite movie actors
included Peter O’Toole,
Gregory Peck, Laurence
Olivier and Spencer Tracy.
Favourite actress?
Favourite film actresses
include Katherine Hepburn,
Gracy Kelly, and Meryl Streep.
What is your favourite
movie?
“Lawrence of Arabia”
“Young Frankenstein” is
one of my favourite Mel
Brooks films. Is the stage
production close to the
movie?
The stage production of
“Young Frankenstein” follows
the film exactly. Mel Brooks
had written brilliant music and
great songs for the show.
“Young Frankenstein” is a hilarious parody of the horror
genre. Mel Brooks decided to spoof horror films when he
directed the initial film. Brooks worked with the late
comedian Gene Wilder to pen the screenplay and the film
also starred Wilder as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, the
grandson of the more famous Victor Frankenstein.
Many critics place “Young Frankenstein” at the top of
their list as “funniest film” ever.
The musical follows the same plot but has added some
hilarious musical numbers, such as “Join the Family
Business,” a dance number filled with singing, dancing mad
scientists, and “Transylvania Mania,” where Igor leads
villagers in dance steps that imitate the classic walk of the
monster. The roles of Elizabeth, Frederick’s fiance, and Frau
Blucher have been expanded to include some silly songs.
“As a cast member, I have come to appreciate the music itself.
The melodies are excellent and the harmonies are often challenging.
One number, “Surprise”, features eight-part harmony, some of it
in canon, with an entourage of five singing counterpoint to the
other three parts.” ~ Trish Buri
From casting to rehearsals
and the opening night curtain,
how long of a process is it to
get a major production ready
for the stage?
The process of doing a show
can be very long. There are
many things involved, from
travelling to see the show,
reading it, applying for the
rights and planning all aspects.
“Les Miserables” was over a
year in the planning and
executing. I usually work 18
months to two years in
advance.
Do you prefer comedies or
do you have a preference
when it comes to deciding
which next major production
to get stage ready.
I don’t have a preference as
long as the play in really good.
I like musicals, drama and
comedies all the same.
Here’s a two-part question.
How many cast members will
take to the stage in “Young
Frankenstein” and is the cast
made up of Brandonites or are
the players from various
towns in Westman?
Thirty actors will hit the
stage in “Young Frankenstein”
and they are from all over
Manitoba, from Brandon,
Portage, Neepawa, Rapid City,
etc. — this is often the case.
I’m told one of the musical
numbers in the play will
feature eight-part harmony!
That must be fun to coordinate, that will be worth
the price of admission right
there. Who is your music
director for this one?
Mindy Choy is the musical
director and she has done a
great job with the singers.
Who is handling the
choreography chores?
Linda Kearns has done her
usual first class choreography.
Best of luck with the
“Young Frankenstein” run,
George! As usual tickets are
available at the WMCA box
office. Have ticket sales been
brisk?
The show is full of laughs
and a lot of fun. We are going
all out to make it a very
entertaining night. I anticipate
now that we are past the
holiday break that ticket sales
will be very brisk in the days
leading up to the opening on
Jan. 15.
You aren’t taking much of
a break before your next
major production as the
auditions
for
“Mary
Poppins” will take place Jan.
20 and 21 at the Park
Community Centre from 6
p.m. to 10 p.m. How does one
go about getting an audition?
To schedule an audition for
“Mary Poppins” one can call
204-727-3156. One needs to
prepare a song and a
monologue.
Are you going to be
replicating
her
flying
umbrella?
I am working on technical
details and flying now.
A couple things that have
always impressed me about 7
Ages is the team work
between you and your wife
Trish and the passion for the
theatre you two always exude
— it’s instantly noticeable
from the word go. Her
attention to detail with the
wardrobe and other behindthe-scenes things is a major
contribution that aids in all
the success 7 Ages has
enjoyed. Was that the plan
from the beginning for you
two? You direct and she takes
care of costumes, etc.?
We do work together on the
shows. Trish has done an
amazing job behind the scenes
as well as an actress in shows.
She has also directed shows for
7 Ages. We do work as a team
with a number of wonderful
individuals. Our whole team
of people is amazing and work
very hard to bring about a
quality production.
Any thoughts on which
major stage production you
will tackle next?
I have lots of thoughts and
irons in the fire beyond “Mary
Poppins” but am not at liberty
to divulge at this time.
Let’s do a few fun
questions. Which big-time
actors that rank among your
favourites have you actually
seen in action on stage?
Of the actors that I have seen
perform live on stage I
particularly liked Phillip

Do you know a caregiver who
comforts, is kind, empathizes and
is caring? Brockie Donovan presents
the Brandon and Westman’s
Caregiver Award to help honour and
recognize the caregivers in our
community. Each quarter we will
honour a caregiver based upon a
review of nominations received from
their peers, friends, patients, families
and others who feel a particular
person excels in his/her role as a
caregiver. To nominate a person, send
their name, contact info and
employer’s name (if applicable) by
email to [email protected]
or mail to 332-8th Street, Brandon,
MB R7A 3X4. Include a brief story
on the impact this person is having
on the lives of others by being a
caregiver and also supply your name
and contact info. In November 2015,
representatives from the community
will review and select the “Caregiver
of the Year” to be announced at a
reception at city hall.
