Dear Parishioners,
Those Who Didn’t Live To Be Baptized by Fr. George W. Rutler
There was a theologian who, when discouraged, would keep repeating to himself, "I have
been baptized."
Since the Prince of Lies has discouragement as his chief strategy and purpose, the Rite of
Baptism includes an exorcism: an explicit renunciation of Satan, and all his works, and all his empty
promises.
Jesus our Encourager did not have to be baptized, for he had no sin to wash away, but by
plunging into the waters of the Jordan and rising up, he was setting an example of dying and rising,
which in daily life is played out by overcoming obstacles and refuting naysayers. This is modeled in
the famous legend of the Scottish king, Robert the Bruce. As Sir Walter Scott told it, the Bruce
withdrew to a cave after six defeats in battle, and one rainy day, deeply depressed, he watched a
spider weaving a web. Six times the spider's thread broke, and six times the spider resumed its
weaving until it succeeded the seventh time. The Bruce rallied and won his great victory at
Bannockburn, and the crown of Scotland along with it.
Ever since the legalization of abortion in our country, the Church has resisted the temptation
to discouragement in defending innocent life. January 22 will mark the 41st annual March for Life in
Washington. The March has gone on in weather fair and foul, whether government administrations
have been friend or foe. In those years, more than 56 million babies in our country alone have been
destroyed in their mothers' wombs. We lament the loss of at least 110 million soldiers and civilians
worldwide in the two World Wars, and can barely imagine with what talent and invention so many of
them might have endowed the arts and science. The same dirge can be intoned for all those babies.
Last year at this time, I cited a statistical abstract using the ratio of professions to population
and the number of infants aborted. The resulting estimate showed that in the last 35 years, those
lives destroyed could have included: two U.S. presidents; seven Supreme Court justices; 102 U.S.
senators and 589 congressmen; 8,123 judges; 31 Nobel Prize laureates; 328 Olympic medalists;
6,092 professional athletes; 134,841 physicians and surgeons; 392,500 registered nurses; 70,669
clergy, including 6,852 Catholic priests and 11,010 nuns; 1,102,443 elementary and high-school
teachers; 553,821 truck drivers; 224,518 maids and housekeepers; 33,939 janitors; 134,028 farmers
and ranchers; 109,984 police officers; and 39,477 firefighters.
None of those infants lived to be baptized, and they are entrusted to the mercy of God. Our
nation now has the lowest birthrate in its history, and may be approaching the demographic winter
that is destroying many other countries. The good news is that contending for life year in and year
out has raised consciences, and the rate of abortions is at an all-time low. So when facing Satan
and all his works and all his empty promises, say with good courage: I have been baptized.

SIGN-UP FOR ADORATION
On Thursday, January 22nd, 2015, our parish will
have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:00
AM—7:00 PM at All Saints Church. This will be in
support of our parishioners who are in Washington, D. C.
on the Right to Life March. Sign-up sheets for
adoration will be at both churches this weekend.
ATTENTION ATTENDEES
We will NOT have a meeting of attendees of the
March for Life this year. We have a large number of
people who have attended last year and in years past
who are already familiar with the March. We will be
going over the Metro information and taking emergency
contact information on the bus ride after saying the
Rosary. However, if you had attended last year and
your contact information has changed, it would be
helpful to have the updated information prior to the trip.
The information regarding the emergency contact would
include the person’s name, relationship to you, and their

attending this year’s March and your information has

ITINERARY
We will begin our journey to the March for Life in
Washington, DC by welcoming attendees to Mass at
6:00 AM at All Saints Church.
Please park your car in the parking lot behind the
Church.
We will re-group at the Parish Center after Mass,
next door to the Church, for a quick breakfast and
board the bus no later that 7:15 AM.
Please do not board the bus until you are
instructed to do so.
There will be name tags on a table in the Parish
Center for pick-up.
Itineraries will be given to you on the bus. Metro
tickets for those who will be in the March will be
given to you once we get to the Shrine.
We will go over all information with you in more
detail enroute.

DIOCESAN CORE THEOLOGY LECTURES
Sacraments/Liturgy: History of the Mass—The
Historical Development of the Mass will be held on

IS GOD CALLING YOU?

Reflecting on God’s Word
Once more we stand with John the Baptist and learn from what he does. Watching Jesus walk by, he
says to two of his disciples, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” And “the two disciples heard what he said and
followed Jesus” (John 1:36–37). One was Andrew, who, in turn, goes to his brother Simon and brings him to
Jesus. And Jesus gives him a new name, Cephas, which means “rock.”
A new life begins for Andrew and Simon, and most likely for the other disciples as well, possibly either
James or John (both were fishermen with Peter and Andrew). It was clear to Jesus that they were searching
for something: “What are you looking for?” They answered, “Teacher, where are you staying?” implying that it
was going to take more than a few minutes to answer that question.
Jesus took them in immediately: “Come, and you will see . . . And they
stayed with him that day” (John 1:38–39).
As we return to Ordinary Time, which comes from the Latin ordo
(“numbered”), we count the weeks off by numbers: Second Sunday,
Third Sunday, and so on. But “ordinary time” is lived in a world touched
by God’s grace. God continues to come into our lives, if we would notice.
Like John pointing out Jesus to his two disciples, the old priest Eli
helps Samuel to understand that the Lord is entering the boy’s life and
tells him to respond, “Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening” (1
Samuel 3:9). We bring each other to God, to Jesus Christ, by being
attentive to how God is at work among us. God continues to work
through each of us, and that is what makes “ordinary time” continuously
extraordinary.
HELLO GOD
Just before our first reading it says that “the
word of the LORD was rare; there were not many
visions.” (1Sam 3:1) I imagine most people today
would think that was true. Do you think God has
stopped talking? People apparently felt that way in
Samuel’s time. Let’s look at the reading to see what
Samuel’s experience can teach us.
At first Samuel thinks it is Eli calling him. It is
not unusual for people to miss a sign from God. If
you have a talent that you are proud of, perhaps it is
a sign that God wants you to use that talent to help
others. Or if a friend tells you she is concerned
about your health, it could be God’s way of telling
you to get help. Try to see God speaking in
whatever happens to you and you may hear a lot
more than you think.
Samuel also gets help from Eli. Eli began to
recognize that the LORD was speaking to Samuel.
Sometimes we need help discerning what the Lord
is telling us. A good spiritual director can help. He or
she will probably ask how often you pray. In our
reading Samuel finally speaks directly to God,
instead of going back to Eli. So if you wonder what
God plans for your life, try spending more time in
prayer with him. I bet we have all had times where
we didn’t know if we are doing God’s will because
we didn’t take time to pray. But don’t do all the
talking. Give God some quiet time to hear his
response. For God hasn’t stopped talking; we just
stopped listening.
Prayer for Respect Life
Heavenly Father, the beauty and dignity
of human life was the crowning
of your creation. You further ennobled
that life when your Son became one with us
in his incarnation. Help us to realize
the sacredness of human life
and to respect it from the moment
of conception until the last moment at death.
Give us courage to speak with truth and love
and with conviction in defense of life.
Help us to extend the gentle hand of mercy
and forgiveness to those
who do not reverence your gift of life.
To all, grant pardon for the times
we have failed to be grateful
for your precious gift of life
or to respect it in others.
We ask this in Jesus' Name. Amen.

Each week of the month Fr. Cesar Anson,

parish visit one of the nursing homes in the area to bring
Holy Communion to the Catholic residents, pray the
Rosary, and let them know we care.

GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS
ALTAR & ROSARY SOCIETY
The Altar & Rosary Society of St. Katharine Drexel
will gather at All Saints Church for recitation of the
Rosary at 8:30 AM followed by attendance at the 9:00
AM Mass on the first Sunday of every month. All
members are encouraged to attend.
The Society will meet on the Tuesday after the first
Sunday at 7:00 PM in the cafeteria of St. Paul School.
All members and anyone interested in joining may
attend. Recitation of the Rosary is held at the Marcella
Nursing Home on Rancocas Road in Burlington on the
second Thursday of each month at 10:30 AM.
There will be no meetings during the months of
January, February, July and August.
YOUNG-AT-HEART CLUB
Members meet on the first Wednesday of every
month at 1:00 PM in the Parish House (next to St. Paul’s
Church). Guest speakers and other points of interest for
seniors are scheduled through the year. Various trips are
also planned. See bulletin announcements for further
information. Anyone over the age of 55 is invited to join
the club. No meetings in January, February, July and
August.
Members receive Communion at the 10:30 Mass at
St. Paul’s Church on the second Sunday of every month.
All members are encouraged to attend.
The Executive Board Committee meets the last
Wednesday of every month at 9:00 AM SHARP in the
Parish House (next to St. Paul’s Church).
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
Recitation of the Rosary is held at All Saints Church
on the Second Sunday of every month at 8:30 AM prior
to the 9:00 AM Mass. All are welcome.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Regular meetings are held at the K.O.C. Hall,
located on E. Broad Street, on the first and third
Thursdays every month at 7:45 PM. Only during the
months of July and August do they meet the first
Thursday.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
Our parish supports a St. Vincent de Paul Society
that helps our community with a Food Pantry and those
going through financial hardships. If you know of
someone who is in need of their services, please
encourage them to call the Society’s office at (609) 3863650 and leave a message.
The Society’s General meeting takes place at 7:00
PM every third Tuesday of each month at their offices at
the All Saints Annex. If you would like to volunteer to be
a part of the good works of the St. Vincent de Paul

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY
Our parish offers a Bereavement Ministry to assist
families in preparing for a funeral Mass for their loved
ones at either All Saints or St. Paul’s Churches. The
parish will help the family choose readings and music to
give the funeral Mass a more personal touch.
Arrangements for funerals are taken care of through
funeral directors who will, on your behalf, contact the
parish to make the necessary arrangements. The parish
will contact the family to arrange an appointment to meet
and plan the funeral Mass.
ADULT AND YOUTH CHOIR
The adult choir sings every Sunday at the 10:30
AM Mass at St. Paul’s Church. The youth choir sings
every Sunday at the 12 Noon Mass at All Saints Church.

NEW PARISHIONERS
Families need to be registered in the Parish before
registering for St. Paul School or Religious Education.
Registration can be made at the Parish Office, located at
223 E. Union St., Burlington, NJ 08016, Monday through
Friday, 8:30 AM—4:00 PM (Closed 12 Noon—1:00 PM).
MOVING
If you are moving out of the Parish area or to a new
address within the Parish, please call the Parish Office.
SICK OR HOMEBOUND
Please call the Parish Office to notify clergy of
hospitalization and to receive the Sacrament of the Sick,
Holy Eucharist or Reconciliation.
In serious illness, please call the Rectory by calling
(609) 387-8191, day or night. Please leave a message.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
Plans for marriage should be made one year in
advance of the wedding date.
This ruling is in
accordance with the common policy of the Diocese of
Trenton. Couples are required to attend either Pre-Cana
or Engaged Encounter. Details and arrangements are to
be made through the Pastor, Parochial Vicar, or one of
the Deacons.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Baptism for parishioners take place on the second
Sunday of every month at St. Paul’s Church, 223 E.
Union St., Burlington, NJ 08016. A Baptismal Preparation
class is required for parents and godparents the Friday
night before the Baptism. This class is held at 7:00 PM at
St. Paul’s Church.
Please contact the Parish Secretary to make
arrangements.
GODPARENTS
Only one godparent is required for Baptism. If two
are chosen, one must be male and one female. A
godparent must be a practicing Roman Catholic
(baptized, confirmed), attending Mass regularly on
Sundays and Holy Days, at least 16 years of age, and in
good standing with the Church (including married in the
Church if they are married). A baptized non-Catholic
Christian may be chosen as a “Christian witness”
provided there is one Catholic godparent. A former
Catholic may not serve as either a godparent or Christian
witness. Godparents will be required to submit a
Certificate of Eligibility from their parish prior to the child’s
Baptism.
