Tuesday Nights Eucharistic Adoration
Join us every Tuesday for evening adoration in the
Church, from 7PM-8PM. This will focus on the
youth and young adults, but the entire parish is welcome to join us adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. There will be some music, silent time, and

Bible Study & Faith Sharing
All are welcome, whether you’ve ever read the Bible before or not, you’re welcome to join us every Tuesday
morning from 9:30-10:45am in the Father Joyce Room
in the Parish Center. Please feel free to stop in and see
what we're all about. We have anywhere from 12 to 20
people (men & women). If you don't think you can come
every week don't worry - come whenever you can!

So, here it is … “ordinary time.” When you come to Mass or
visit Our Lord for adoration in the Blessed Sacrament, and you
look around you, the sanctuary of the Church now seems different. The sanctuary has a certain feel perhaps best described as a
kind of bareness, as the flowers, plants, manger, trees, and decorations from the Christmas Season have been greatly simplified.
The priest no longer wears the beautiful white and gold vestments of Christmas or the brilliant violet or rose of Advent, but
has slipped back into green vestments. All of these signs tell us
that the Christmas season has completed and we have entered
ordinary time once again.
Men’s Bible Study:
Are you looking to understand the bible more? Join us
weekly on Wednesdays from 6:30 -7:45 pm in the lower
Parish Center. Come feed off the word of God and discuss its general application and practical use in our lives
as men. We will also study the Catechism teachings on
each chapter we cover. For more information and

It is true that Ordinary Time makes up the majority of the
church year. However, for those of us who speak English, the
word “ordinary” has some baggage that really doesn’t apply too
well for the “ordinary season” of the church’s liturgical year.
Ordinary for English speaking folks often means the time where
nothing much of important goes on. Ordinary denotes a certain
unimportance, but this is not what ordinary means when it
comes to the liturgical year.
Our English word “ordinary” comes from the Latin word
“ordinalis,” which means numbers in a series. So, one is before
two, two before three, and on it goes. There is certain ordered
numerical series. Now the Latin word ordinalis stems from the
Latin word “ordo” from where comes our English word, “order”
So then Ordinary Time for the Church is the ordered life of the
church. Ordinary time gives us an organized way by which we
can experience all of Sacred Scripture and the Paschal Mystery.
So then, in reality there is nothing ordinary about ordinary time
at all.
Ordinary time helps us keep ordered in space and time as we
pray and as we read and reflect on God’s holy Word. Ordinary
time helps us keep our “ducks in a row,” so to speak, so that we
cover the entire beautiful and sublime mystery of our salvation.
It is this mystery that fills our life with hope of eternal life on
high with the Lord! There is nothing ordinary about that. And,
by the way, that’s why we wear green during ordinary time,
because green is the sign of new life.
Ordinary time and the liturgical color green, these are the moving and beautiful symbols that are signs of hope as we journey
along and follow the life of the Church found in its liturgical
year. It is the sign that our journey leads to new life found in
Christ Jesus, Our Lord!
January 22nd: Day of Prayer for the Legal
Protection of Unborn Children
The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe
v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded
time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373,
designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of
America, January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of
prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right
to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human
person committed through acts of abortion.”
As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the
penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. Another way to take part is through participating in special events
to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

Cupcake Alert!
Father Brian McGrath, pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in
Westfield, Massachusetts, will be our new Pastor
starting March 1st. Ordained for the Diocese of
Springfield in 1992, he is a graduated from the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City. Father brings with him years of love and experience
with Youth Ministry and reach-out. We are very excited to welcome Father McGrath to St. John’s! A
better biography will be available in a future bulletin.

midst of renovating the lower parish center into a
youth center.

Memoriam: Gerry Parent
It saddens our Parish family to hear of
Gerry’s death. Gerry has been such an
active member of our parish family. From
the countless meals he help prepare for
the parish, to the countless doors he
knocked on years ago with Future of
Hope. He was an active member and
Grand Knight of the Fourth Degree of the
Knights of Columbus JFK Council and was an adult altar server and a Eucharistic Minister. Gerry, may the angels welcome
you home to see our Savior, Jesus Christ. Rest in peace.

Food Gift Cards:
115 families have received food cards from January
2014 to Thanksgiving. The Women’s Group donated
cards at their meeting– Thanks! 42 families received
food for Thanksgiving, thanks to the parishioner’s
donations, and 12 turkeys were donated.
Giving Tree:
We have 41 families in Agawam for the Giving Tree.
They can pick up their gifts in the Parish Center on
Dec. 21st at noon.
Homebound & Hospitalized
Anyone in the parish who is hospitalized or placed in
any rehab or nursing facility, please notify Mary at
786-4499, including facility and room number.
Bereavement Group
The Bereavement group is on the 5th week. Anyone
who has been going through any kind of loss is welcome, we meet at 10AM on Thursdays. There are 13

Meets on Wednesday at 10AM. This wonderful
group of women have given out 493 prayer shawls to
the sick, along with baby hats to Mercy Hospital. If

Eucharistic Ministers If you are interested in
becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, call Mary.
The Visitation Group meets on the second
Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. We need more
volunteers for the visitation group. Call Mary.
Nursing Homes:
Anyone interested in giving an hour a month at Heritage Hall, can receive training for the facilities and
homebound. You have to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion before the training. Call
