We have entered into that period of the liturgical
year known as Winter Ordinary Time. As we
remember the beauty and joy of the season we just
concluded, I wish to thank all who made our
Christmas celebrations so special and meaningful. I
know you join me in thanking:
- Michael Dias, our Music Director, and the members
of the Adult Choir, and our cantors, who shared the
gift of music, helping us to pray the beautiful
liturgies of Christmas;
- Frank Leary and all who shared their time and
talent to beautify our worship space for the holy
days;
- our faithful liturgical ministers: Lectors, Eucharistic
Ministers, Altar Servers, and Ushers, who minister to
and with our parish community each week;
- Representative Betty Poirier, the members of our
Saint Vincent de Paul Society, and all who assisted
in any way in our Advent Adopt-a-Family project,
helping to make this Christmas a little brighter for a
number of families here in town;
- our dedicated parish staff - Sister Kathee Corrigan,
Monica Forte, Michele Dillon, Mike Dias, Denise
Peixoto, and Mike Dillon - for all of their work,
especially “behind the scenes,” that makes my life
and ministry a lot easier and allows our parish to
flourish;
- Fr. Ken Sicard, O.P. and Fr. Gabriel Pivarnik, O.P.,
our Dominican brothers who assist with weekend
Masses (and much more!), for their faithful ministry
and generous priestly service.
On a personal note, please know my sincere gratitude
for the outpouring of kindness and support given to
me by you, the wonderful parishioners of Saint Mary
Parish. Your cards, gifts, and words of affirmation
are so very much appreciated. As I have said many
times before, it is a pleasure and honor to serve as
your pastor. The Christmas season always reminds
me of how truly blessed I am to serve with you. I
pray that God will continue to bless each of you with
gifts of joy, good health, and peace in this new year.

SAINT MARY-SACRED HEART SCHOOL
Open House & Registration
Our parish’s Catholic elementary school, Saint
Mary-Sacred Heart School, will
hold their annual Open House and
Registration on Sunday, January
25, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The program will begin in Sacred Heart Church
with brief introductions and presentations.
Various displays highlighting the faith formation,
academic program and extra-curricular activities
of the school will be arranged in the church’s
meeting room. Tours of the school will be
conducted. Students, faculty, and parents will be
available to share their experiences of our school
and to answer questions. Registration materials
will be distributed.
We encourage our parish families to consider a
Catholic elementary education; an education that
provides a strong moral, faith, and academic
foundation for our children. SMSH continues a
parish ministry that was begun 91 years ago. With
a remarkable history, we look forward to a future
filled with promise and possibility. Come and join
in this exciting time!

Tuesday, January 13, 2015.

Faith Formation News
Our SMSH faith formation grade 6 students will
participate in this years “Souper Bowl of Caring”. Our
students will be collecting monetary donations inside
Saint Mary’s Church on Saturday Jan. 31st and Sunday
Feb. 1st. Our young people are taking part in the
nation’s largest youth-led weekend of giving to support
our local soup kitchen that serves a hot meal to those in
need each week here in North Attleboro. You will see
our students holding “Soup Pots” with a smile! We
appreciate your support with this very special project.

Please keep our second grade students and their
families in your prayers as they prepare to receive the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. They have
been working with their parents at home
and their catechists/school teachers in the
classrooms together for this special day.
We have six First Reconciliations for both parishes!
Grade 6 class will meet Monday afternoon/evening
January 26th at Saint Mary’s parish hall.
Grade 7 class will meet Monday evening February 2nd
@ 6:30pm in St. Mary’s parish hall.
***Grade 8 class on Sunday evening February 1st has
been CANCELLED due to the Super Bowl game!
Grade 9 will meet on Sunday evening January 25th for
the Candidate/Sponsor dinner. All candidates will be
measured for their robes at the dinner. Our date for the
Sacrament of Confirmation is Saturday April 11, 2015
at the 4pm Mass.
There are No classes Sunday January 18th &
Tuesday January 20th due to the
Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.
The next family Mass class is Sunday January 25th.
There are No classes for grades 1, 2 & 3 on
Sunday January 25th and Tuesday January 27th
due to the family Mass.
Grades 4 & 5 will meet for class on
Tuesday January 27th.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
The Thomas P. McDonough Knights of Columbus
Council #330 meet in the parish hall of St. Mary
Church on the second Wednesday of every month
at 7:00pm. If interested or if you have any

BAPTISMAL PREPARATION
Parents requesting the baptism of their child should
be registered members of the parish who attend
weekend Mass here at Saint Mary on a weekly basis.
Please pick up and complete one of the Parish
Census forms if you have not already registered with
the parish. If this is your first Baptism here at Saint
Mary Parish, parents are asked to attend a brief
baptismal preparation session. Advance registration
is required. The next preparation session will take
place on Sunday, February 8 at 12:30 pm in the

SMSH FUND RAISING GOAL
As you read in the parish bulletin and heard
announced at all Masses, our parish school, Saint
Mary-Sacred Heart, has been given a wonderful
opportunity. An anonymous alumnus of the school
has challenged our school community to raise
$100,000. He will match this total amount, dollar
for dollar. This generous alum believes his years at
Saint Mary-Sacred Heart School contributed, in a
major way, to the man he is today. He would like to
show his gratitude by assuring the stability and
growth of our school, not only for present students,
but for generations to come.

the Saint Mary-Sacred Heart School Growth Fund.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
Jesus said: “Whatever you do for the least of these,
so you do unto me.”
The St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Mary’s
helps struggling local families with basis needs,
including food, shelter, utilities, and heating. We
rely on the generosity of our parishioners in
meeting these needs. Right now, our pantry is
especially low on hot and cold cereal. Donations
of nonperishable food items can be placed in the
SVDP boxes located near church entrances, or at
the marked bin near the entrance of Stop & Shop.
Monetary donations can be deposited in the poor
boxes located near the church entrances, or mailed
to SVDP/St. Mary’s Church, 14 Park St., NA.
Anyone interested in joining the Society, please

meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month at
6:30 pm in the Parish Hall. All are welcome.
REFLECTION FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
You Will See
Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, baptized people
with water but told his followers that someone was
coming who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. Today’s
Gospel reading does not record any conversation between
John and Jesus, but emphasizes that as John watches Jesus
go by, he announces that this man is indeed the promised
one, the Lamb of God. Andrew and another man set out to
follow Jesus, who turns and asks what they are looking
for. Their answer is a strange one: they want to know
where he lives. Jesus simply replies, “Come, and you will
see.” We are told they stay with him for the whole day.
The next day, Andrew finds his brother, Simon, and tells
him he has met the Messiah—the Anointed One—and
takes Simon to meet Jesus. Like John, Jesus looks hard at
Simon, taking the measure of the man, and in the light of
what he perceives in him changes his name to Cephas—or
as we more commonly know it, Peter (“the rock”).
The two encounters seem very ordinary, yet they
are life-changing. Jesus is not proclaiming a message,
preaching to a crowd, or performing great miracles.
Instead, he is simply walking past John, and when
Andrew and his friend introduce themselves, offers them
hospitality and companionship. When Jesus meets Peter,
he does not ask probing questions about his family and his
background or make solemn pronouncements. He just
looks at the man, makes an assessment of his character,
and accepts him as a friend. The simplicity of Jesus’
manner demonstrates his willingness to receive people “as
they are” but also to call forth their potential. He does not
offer lengthy explanations of who he is, but takes people
to his home and lets them see for themselves.
