Third Sunday In Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners,
These past weeks, we have been celebrating First Penance with our 2nd Grade First
Communion classes. They received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the sacrament of
God’s mercy for the first time. They are learning that our God is a God of mercy and
compassion, that He forgives us our sins when we confess them and gives us His help to do
better. This may be a good time for us to receive this sacrament if it has been a while since
we have done so. We believe that Jesus instituted this sacrament and that He did so for our
benefit. Knowing our human condition, it is healing to hear that one is absolved of our sins.
There is power in the Word and a weight is lifted from many when they hear the priest
absolve them of their sins. We also have to remember that all sins are social. We are part of
a community and when we weaken ourselves by our sin, we also weaken the community.
When we hurt others it is only right that we say we are sorry to that person. Going to
confession to a priest serves two purposes. The priest sits in the place of the Lord so that
you can hear God’s forgiveness. The priest also, as the leader of the community, forgives
on behalf of the community. There are some people that we have hurt that may never come
into our lives again and there are some that we have no knowledge that we hurt by our
actions or inactions. When we confess our sins, the priest forgives us on their behalf. You
give me the power to forgive on your behalf when people confess their sins. If you notice,
there are different times that I am available for confession, or you can make an
appointment. When Lent arrives next month, there will be the program, “The Light Is On
For You,” when there will be a priest available on every Wednesday evening in all the
churches in the Archdiocese to hear your confession. I encourage you to make this a
sacrament that you receive as part of your spiritual discipline.
This week is Catholic Schools Week. I share with you the following message from the
Very Rev. Gerard Petringa, Episcopal Vicar for the North Region;
By choosing Catholic education students have a unique opportunity to develop the
whole person through spiritual and academic formation. A Catholic education
prepares the student to make a difference in the world. The students that attend
Catholic schools in the Archdiocese outperform their national peers at each grade
level of the Stanford 10 assessment, secondary students outperform their state and
national public school peers on the SAT, and secondary school graduates matriculate
to college at a greater rate than their state and national public school peers.
We are blessed to have a parish school and we thank all who support the school in any way.
I shall be available for confession this week on Saturday, January 31, from 12:00 p.m. 12:30 p.m.
May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.
God love you,
2

An Inquisitive Walk through the Scripture, 60
We recommend keeping these reflections in a three-ring binder for the sake of pondering, challenging,
questioning what is offered. Please consider that this is a series and some things may not be as clear if all
individual reflections are not read.
Joseph, son of Jacob/Israel, was a type of Jesus, son of God. He was betrayed by his family but became the savior
of his family. Joseph saw his life as part of God’s plan. After their father Israel died, Joseph’s brothers were
concerned that Joseph would get revenge for what they had done to him when they sold him into slavery. Joseph
responds to his brothers in a remarkable way:
“’Fear not, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good,
to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. So do not fear; I will provide for
you and your little ones.’ Thus he reassured them and comforted them.” (Gen. 50:19-21)
Jesus told His disciples it was the will of the Father that He take the place of sinful humans and experience the
consequence of human sin. As Jesus died on the cross for our sake, He prayed “Father, forgive them; for they
know not what they do.” The Greek significance of the word for “forgive” is that it is continued present action and
is more appropriately translated “keep on forgiving.” Like Joseph, Jesus comforted His people and, with the
Father, sent the Holy Spirit as Consoler for all His people.
Joseph is just one “type” of Christ who will find fulfillment in the person of Jesus. Over the course of many
centuries, the Lord would gradually reveal criteria of the Messiah so that He would be recognizable. There is no
other religion that has such a wealth of prophecy and criteria which are fulfilled in one person. It is no fluke that
Judeo-Christian Scriptures are so wonderfully interwoven. It is not a coincidence that Christian authors routinely
refer back to the Hebrew Scriptures to gain understanding of Jesus as the Messiah. St. Jerome said that
“ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ”.
A little tidbit. We talk of the twelve tribes of Israel descended from the twelve sons of Jacob/Israel. We speak of
the twelve apostles as corresponding to the twelve tribes. It is curious that Israel, when he was dying, said to
Joseph, “And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are
mine; Ephraim and Manassah shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. And the offspring born to you after them
shall be yours.” (Gen. 48:5, 6) So, Israel really had fourteen sons and we can see the possibility of fourteen
apostles in the election of Matthias and the choosing of Saul/Paul.

The Affirming Life Committee is sponsoring a
Valentine Book Drive for homeless families in
our area. We contribute food donations as they
are available and thought giving something to
support intellectual growth would also be
helpful. Over 200 families are at any given time
housed in motel rooms or in their cars or in other
locations, and the children, in particular, have
only parking lots or motel hallways to play
in. Books and the information in them will help
open new vistas for them. Parishioners may
contribute whatever funds they would like to the
project and the committee will purchase the books
selected and forward them to those in need. Gift
cards will be available. Monetary contributions
may be given to the Affirming Life Committee
members beginning Saturday, January 31 and
continuing until February 15. Please stop by our
display in the foyer.
February Ministry Schedules
February Ministry Schedules are available online
and in the sacristy. Please submit any March
exceptions by February 10. Please drop off at the
rectory or email to [email protected].
It is with deep gratitude and
appreciation that I write this letter. My
astonishment at the amount of families
you are able to serve never seems to diminish over the
years. St. Joseph Parish helped provide clothing, toys,
games, books, and gift certificates to more than 100 families
attending our center based and family child care programs
this year.
