Jeff oday’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord commemorates the inauguration of Jesus’ public ministry as He descends into the waters of the Jordan River to be baptized by John. As He does so, Jesus enters fully into the life of every human being by acknowledging the need for conversion and repentance. Of course, Jesus Himself has no need to turn away from sin— He is God and, therefore, does not know sin. Nevertheless, His baptism by John reveals to us that He willingly chooses to unite Himself to the rest of sinful humanity, which had chosen long ago to separate itself from God’s friendship through the Original Sin of Adam. By doing so, Jesus becomes the New Adam, the Man who accepts God’s will and chooses to be in relationship with the Father, who in turn acknowledges Him as His “beloved Son,” with whom He is well pleased (cf. Mark 1:11). y being baptized by John, Jesus enters fully into what it means to be a fallen human being. As He goes down into the waters, He accepts His mission as the Christ, who, while remaining sinless for all eternity, will assume the sins—and the consequences of sin (i.e., death)— for the whole of humanity. In a very real way, Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan is His wedding to all of humanity “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death.” It is not a coincidence that Jesus’ first miracle occurs at a wedding, when at Cana He changes water into wine. It is as if those baptismal waters are thus transformed by Jesus into the wine of a great wedding feast. Later, at the end of His life on earth, He will again change that nuptial wine into the blood of His Passion at the Last Supper and on the Cross. he baptism that Jesus receives from John today prefigures the Sacrament of Baptism, which He establishes prior to His Ascension into heaven (cf. Matthew 28:19). Jesus chose to join Himself to our sinful humanity by entering into a baptism founded by a sinful man in the Jordan River. Now, by God’s own gift, we have the opportunity to choose to join ourselves to Jesus’ divinity by entering into the Baptism founded by Jesus Himself. The Sacrament of Baptism today draws us into the very Mystery of our salvation and unites us to the Body of Christ, the New Adam, who is the Father’s beloved Son. Therefore, I invite you to take some time today to reflect upon your own baptismal promises: to turn away from sin and to profess your faith in the Triune God both in word and in deed.
