Dear Spikkel
letter from
the editor
Welcome to Spikkelhood!
I compiled this very exciting Spikkel book to provide you with as much
information as possible about life in Magrietjie as well as life at University. The Spikkel book will help you prepare and get excited for what lies
ahead! Please read every page carefully as it contains a lot of important
information.
In this book you will have the first opportunity to meet your House Committee (HK) members. Each of them has a special message for you that will
help you to get to an idea of what this person is about and also what her
portfolio entails. There are also answers to frequently asked questions, but
if you have any additional unanswered questions, please don’t hesitate to
contact me.
Included in the envelope are forms that you need to complete ASAP and return to me before 1 December 2014.
• The Spikkel questionnaire will allow me to get to know you better and finalize room placements – so please answer as honestly as
possible. On this form you can also indicate your room preference. It is important to understand that Magrietjie has only a few single
rooms available which means you will most probably be placed in a double room.
• The medical form that you and your parents need to complete allows us to have all your medical information at hand if something
should happen to you while in Magrietjie.
• Please send me a recent head and shoulders photograph of yourself (one photograph if sent via e-mail, two photographs if sent via
snail mail). The picture must be in colour.
• Please complete the clothing order form and mail it to me (only if you have not completed an order form at the October Open Day)
• Finally, at the back of this book you will find a checklist to help you get everything together before you move in on 17 January 2015.
PLEASE CHECK ALL THE ITEMS IN THE CHECKLIST!
You are now about to take the first step of becoming part of Magrietjie and experiencing our Pink Passion! Sit back, relax and enjoy your
introduction to the Pink Palace…

Moving in programme
17 January 2015
Residence opens at 07:00:
The Residence opens at 07:00 on 17 January 2015. That is when you can
start moving in. (Arrangements can be made with Ruani should you wish to
move in on Friday, 16 January 2015, between 14:00-18:00)
Arrival (morning):
When you arrive at Magrietjie, you can park anywhere outside the residence and bring your belongings through the front gate in Prospect street.
Alternatively you can enter Magrietjie’s parking area in Grosvenor Street
(the street to the east side of Magrietjie). Once you have arrived at Magrietjie, please enter the building and walk through the foyer to the recreation
hall inside Magrietjie. Here you will receive your room keys, sign your room
contract, get the opportunity to hand-in all the items you had to bring along,
pay for outstanding clothing and other items, and receive your house clothing (or buy if you haven’t done so yet).
Be settled in and unpacked by 12:45:
Please be settled in your room by 12:45, after which all the parents will
gather in Magrietjie’s recreational hall at 13:00. Here the House Committee (HK) and the House Parents will address your parents and answer any
last questions. Once the official Welcoming Week programme commences,
there will be no time for you to get your room ready for the year. This means
that all your belongings need to be in your room and unpacked.
Goodbyes:
After the parents meeting in the hall, you have to bid your parents farewell
and gather in the hall at 14:50 - which marks the beginning of the Welcome
Week programme.
Note all items on the checklist:
Please consult the checklist at the end of this book. This will help you to
remember all the essential goodies that you need to bring to begin your life
in Magrietjie. Note to self – don’t leave home without ticking off all the items
on the checklist! HAPPY PACKING!!

To the Parents
Congratulations on your daughter being accepted into the University of Pretoria and Magrietjie!
All residences follow a University-approved Welcoming
week programme from 17 to 25 January, followed by a
RAG week programme. During these first two weeks your
daughter will be very busy getting acquainted with her
new environment. You can rest assured that our Welcoming programme is NOT an initiation or “ontgroening”, but
a necessary programme to orientate your daughter to university and residence life. Due to high stress factors typical
to adapting to a new environment (such as an overload of
information), your daughter may feel very tired towards the
end of the Welcoming week. You can help her through this
time by being positive and by reassuring her that it takes
time to adapt to a new environment. Please do not put her
under unnecessary pressure to expect regular contact with
you during Welcome week. She will have some free time
during which she will be able to contact you. Lastly, we will
ensure that your daughter eats three nutritious meals per
day during Welcoming week. If students are busy on campus during lunch time, we take their meals to campus.
If a problem does occur, especially during Welcome week,
please inform us so that we can resolve the matter ASAP.
In addition, we have access to medical, psychological and
academic support and assistance. If you ever feel that your
daughter needs extra care or support during a difficult
time, please contact Ruani Oberholzer (First Year Guardian) or the House Parents (André & Yolanda Jordaan).
We will treat your calls as confidential whilst keeping an
extra eye out for your daughter. If your daughter needs
additional personal belongings or medicine during Welcoming week, please call Ruani to make the necessary
arrangements for delivery. In general, should your daughter experience a problem, she should go to her First Year
Guardian, any of the House committee members and/or
the House Parents for help.
Herewith some valuable information to assist you when
moving into Magrietjie on 17 January 2015:
PACKING: Please consult the checklist at the end of the
book to ensure that your daughter has all the necessary
items packed.
ARRIVAL: Please report to the recreation hall when you
arrive at Magrietjie. Here you will receive your daughter’s
room keys and clothing, get the opportunity to hand-in all
the items you had to bring along, and pay for outstanding
clothing and other items.
MOVING IN: You can move your daughter’s belongings into
Magrietjie between 07:00 and 12:45 on Saturday, 17 January 2015. Arrangements can be made with Ruani Oberholzer (076 792 0676) should you wish to move in on Friday
16 January 2015 between 14:00 and 18:00. Magrietjie has
11 floors and two lifts. Be prepared to wait your turn at the
lift, or even carry your belongings up the stairs. It may be a
good idea to bring family members along to help you move
in. Allow yourself sufficient time to get your daughter and
all her belongings moved into Magrietjie.
PARENTS MEETING: Please be moved in and unpacked by
12:45 to allow you to attend the parents only meeting in
the recreational hall at 13:00. During this meeting we will
share important information with you, and answer any last
questions.
SAYING YOUR GOODBYES: After the parents meeting in the
hall, please say your last goodbyes by latest 14:45, to allow
your daughter to report to the hall at 14:50 – which marks
the beginning of the official Welcome week programme.
Your emergency contact number is that of Ruani Oberholzer (cell 076 792 0676), the First Year Guardian. You will get
peace of mind once you realise how happy your daughter is
in Magrietjie and that she has truly made it her home away
from home. If you find the empty room in your house overwhelming, give yourself a pat on the back and think of your
great achievement in raising a daughter that has been admitted into a top-class university and a fantastic residence!

Magrietjie values
In any community a set of values is extremely important to
achieve excellence and unity. As a Magrietjie community, we
also live by a value-based system. We pride ourselves in our
value-driven culture and we strive to align our actions with our
values.
Our six values are:
Acceptance: Understanding and acknowledging our
differences without judgment. We encourage, and are content
with, different opinions. We are open to listen and willing to
have our minds changed. We celebrate uniqueness!
“Pride is something we
all share... “My alles vir
altyd vir Magrietjie!”
Ownership: Taking responsibility for Magrietjie’s image and its
possessions. We take responsibility for our actions because we know it will affect our own personal image, but
most importantly the Magrietjie image. Every Magrietjie lady is considered an owner of the Magrietjie brand,
and therefore it is the responsibility of the ladies to ensure that our home is cherished and protected.
Be the Best that You can Be: Identify your best qualities and use them to enhance yourself and Magrietjie. We
are a diverse residence because of the outstanding qualities of each Magrietjie lady. Through challenging one
another and ourselves, we leap towards excellence and diversity by supporting and serving one another with
our qualities. Be the Best You can Be, so that Magrietjie can Be the Best that It can Be.
Pride: To be an ambassador of Magrietjie. This means acting in line with the Magrietjie brand i.e. passion, confidence, energy, competitiveness and humility. To believe in Magrietjie and that which it represents whole-heartedly. Pride is something we all share - it unites us and a united house goes so much further. “My alles vir altyd
vir Magrietjie!”
Mutual respect: Treat others the way you want to be treated. This
includes acknowledging each other’s humanity and realizing that
respect starts with yourself.
Integrity: Doing the right thing, even when no one is looking or
without receiving acknowledgement. This is more than adhering to
moral and ethical principles – it also focuses on being consistently
true and honest with a sense of self-discipline. Acting in a way that
has Magrietjie’s best interests at heart.
Our values are a very important aspect of Magrietjie which you as a
Spikkel should take to heart and, together with the House, believe
in whole-heartedly. Our six values go parallel with the objectives and
vision we as Magrietjie aim at achieving.

Meet the house parents
Dearest Spikkel / Liefste Spikkel
You are standing at the threshold of your academic career at
one of the top universities in South Africa. It is a privilege
to be able to study at the University of Pretoria, but an even
greater one to be part of Magrietjie.
Here you will be included into a special family circle and become part of a special sisterhood.
For many students, living in a residence is a transformative
experience. At Magrietjie you will be shaped in different
ways - not only intellectually and emotionally - but also as a
person. We attempt to create an environment that promotes
both academic and experiential learning. Furthermore, we
encourage dialogue opportunities to promote a sense of
understanding and belonging. We have values unique to
Magrietjie to ensure that all feel at home. These values are
acceptance, integrity, mutual respect, ownership, pride and
‘to be the best that you can be’. We want to create a special
place for each individual, surrounded by unique people in a
safe environment.

Before we say goodbye, let us tell you about ourselves. We
are both professors at the university (Economics and Marketing) and have been working with students for many years.
However, in Magrietjie, we are not lecturers, but your House
dad and House mom (often referred to as Papa Pink and
Mama Pink) who are available to assist with help and advice.
It was indeed our passion for young people that led us to become house parents of Magrietjie.

We are a family of four – this is if we include our dog
(Rommel) and our cockatoo (Magnum). Rommel is a
friendly pug dog that loves to play with the ladies on
the front lawn, and Magnum is a pretty pink-and-gray
cockatoo who talks, whistles and plays all day.
Hi! I am Rommel!
And my name is
Magnum! We can’t
wait to meet you!
Ons sien uit daarna om jou as ‘n Spikkel te leer ken. Ons weet jy gaan in Magrietjie
lewenslange vriendskappe smee. Onthou dat die lewe ‘n gawe is, so maak seker
dat jy die meeste maak van jou ervaring in Magrietjie.
We are looking forward to getting to know you as a Spikkel. We know that you will
make lifelong friends in Magrietjie. Please remember your background and circumstances may have influenced who you are, but that you are now responsible
for who you become.
Ke a leboga!
Lots of pink love!

Letter from the primaria
Dearest prospective Spikkel / Beste voornemende Spikkel
First and foremost, I just want to congratulate you for being accepted into one of the sought-after
residences at the University of Pretoria. You have been ‘hand-picked’ out of thousands of other candidates and should feel so proud.
I hope you have incredible expectations for next year, and I hope that you are ready for change,
growth and creating life-long memories. Magrietjie is going to exceed all your expectations and she
is going to mould you into a pink, proud and passionate lady.
I am Michéle Uys, your Primaria, and my duty is essentially to ensure that the rest of the House Committee are in line with our values and take excellent care of you next year. I was also a Spikkel once,
and I know the stresses that you are facing now, but I want to guarantee you that there is nothing to
worry about. We have an incredible welcoming-week planned for you and, speaking from
experience, it is going to be one of the most exciting weeks of your life.
Let me tell you something about Magrietjie. In Magrietjie, the ladies give their very best in everything
they do; whether it is playing a netball match, studying for a test or practicing for a cultural activity.
12
This bug will bite you as soon as you get here too, because you won’t want to miss out on all the amazing activities.
There is time to do everything in Res, so I want to urge you now already not to miss out and to participate in everything. Before you know it your year of being a Spikkel will be over, and you will just want to re-live it over and over.
Magrietjie is a leading Res. We lead by example and the proof is in our six values. Be sure to know these values
before you move in as they will become the core of your Magrietjie experience. These values will find a place in your
heart and you will carry them for the rest of your life. We follow a system filled with passion and excellence and I am
extremely excited to experience that ‘PINK PRIDE’ with you in the year to come.
Good luck for your final exams!!! Remember, this is your opportunity to establish the foundation for your future. ‘Be
the best that you can be’ and get excited for one of the best years of your life…
Every lady wants to be a Spikkel - this is your opportunity to embrace PINK PASSION.
I look forward to ‘huppeling’ through the year with you. Pack your bags because Magrietjie is waiting for you!!!

My precious Spikkel / My kosbare Spikkel
How excited am I to meet you! My name is Ruani and I am your First Year Guardian (Ienkvoog) for this exciting time that lies ahead. During this transition from high school to university I am going to be here with
you every step of the way – guiding you and taking care of you. I am here to help you make Magrietjie
your home and to pave your way into the pink family - all while helping you to become an independent
young lady and supporting you in any way I can. We will be going through Welcome Week together. This
is a week you can look forward to, because it is going to be your first experience with our Pink Passion as
a Spikkel (by the way: Spikkel is our special name for our first years)!
Welkomweek is daardie spesiale eerste week in Magrietjie, waar jy sommer klomp nuwe dinge gaan leer
en ervaringe gaan deel. Bring hope energie saam want ons gaan sommer dadelik ons pienk passie vir
Magrietjie met jou deel.
Being part of the Magrietjie residence will be one of the most enriching experiences of your life. In the
Pink Palace we encourage one another, support one another, laugh with one another, grow with one
another, learn from one another, and love one another. These are the building blocks of our pink sisterhood and are the result of our six values. It is this strong Magrietjie sisterhood that carries us to reach new
and great heights. Think about it - you are now going to be part of it!
What I want most for you in the coming year is that you will become the best person that you can be.
14
As your Ienkvoog, I don’t want you to only survive, I want you to thrive. When coming to Magrietjie,
don’t be afraid to spread your wings and take a chance on every new opportunity. Let every thought you
think and every dream you dream be the inspiration that sets you into motion. Exceed your expectations and move your boundaries! The House Committee (me included) will be the wind beneath your
wings to help you achieve your goals.
I leave you with this quote from one of Erin Hanson’s poems. Remember it when you feel scared or
overwhelmed.
“There is freedom waiting for you, on the breezes of the sky.
And you ask “What if I fall?”
Oh but my darling, what if you fly?”
Give your all to Magrietjie, and Magrietjie will give its all to you. Welcome to Spikkelhood and life in
our beloved colour pink!
Magrietjie is gereed om jou met ope arms te ontvang. Welkom by Huis Pienk!

Dear Spikkels
Take a second… and congratulate yourself on making the best ladies
residence at TUKS! You’re about to embark on a journey like no other, filled
with laughter, hard work and friendships that you’ll cherish for the rest of
your lives. Welcome to the ‘Pink Palace’ that is Huis Magrietjie!
For the year ahead, I have been fortunate enough to be handling both the
Vice-Primaria and RAG (Reach out And Give) portfolios. The first RAG event
that you get to be involved in is RAG procession, where two residences
(male and female) are partnered to build a float to represent what RAG is
all about. This year we are fortunate to have the gentlemen of Mopanie as RAG partners. We also participate in RAG
projects where we get to make an immediate impact on the lives of the less fortunate through community engagements by means of our long-term and short-term projects.
To kick-start RAG for the year, I am going to need your support – so please read the next part carefully.
Please bring along the following, on the day you move into Magrietjie:
• Non-perishable foods, e.g. tinned food
• A children’s book (it can be second-hand)
• Sanitary towels for the ‘Pledge a Pad Foundation’
• Stationary: 2 pens, 2 pencils, an eraser and a ruler (10cm in length)
• Grietjie Piggy - Bring a self-made piggy bank (approximately 20cm x 20cm in size) for our annual Miss
Grietjie Piggy. Your individual piggy can, for example, be
made out of paper (but the sky is the limit). Decorate your
piggy according to the theme: “when my piggy grows up…”
(and also bring clothes for you to match your piggy for our
fashion parade). Now for the important part: please fill
your piggy with as many coins (or notes) as possible, as this
money will go towards our RAG projects for the less fortunate.
Remember, all the items on the list are going towards making a
positive difference in someone’s life, and I hope that all of you will
be able to see for yourselves just how amazing it is to reach out to
the community. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of you!
An enormous amount of pink love!

Christél
Good day and welcome aboard Magrietjie Airlines.
This flight will take off at (insert your home address here) on 17 January 2015 and return for landing at (insert your
home address here) on 27 November 2015.
During take-off, you may experience some sense of loss of what “was” and doubt for what is “still to come”. Although
this may lead to some discomfort, you will soon reach the optimal altitude and the thoughts of endless possibilities will
take over.
Our flight has a few stop-overs in very interesting places, just to keep your year-long journey balanced and interesting.
It will also help you to discover new places and meet new people that will share your journey with you, and possibly
even accompany you on your future travels. We will visit different countries and revel in their cultures - sharing traditions
and special talents along the way, admiring the beauty and experiencing the best this journey has to offer. Every time,
recharging our emotional and spiritual batteries before we take off for another flight towards our final destination.
While in the air, it’ll be hard work staying at the top. In-flight exercises and a balanced diet will keep you healthy, while
you learn some new skills in the educational on-screen entertainment. Luckily, while working hard, you’ll always have
the next stop-over to look forward to!
By the time we start our descent, you will have developed an understanding for the way the flight works, and you will
have integrated with the routine and people around you. At Magrietjie Airlines, we are famous for creating such a sense
of belonging, that Spikkel-travellers book their tickets for the advanced traveller’s flight the following year as soon as
they land at their destination.
I am Christél, and along with the rest of our team, I will be your hostess for this flight. We are always there to make sure
you get the most out of your journey and arrive safely on the other side - with memories that will last you a lifetime.
My role in the team is to organise your stop-overs and make sure you have a bit of fun in-between all the in-flight work.
You can leave your travel pillow at home and bring a camera in
its place, because you’ll be too excited to miss any of the stopovers and activities I have planned for this year to take a nap.
By now, I’m sure you’ve realised that you have chosen the best
airline to host you for this magnificent journey. I am very excited
to meet you and help you take on this special journey that lies
ahead of you!
I’d like to leave you with my personal travel motto for all my
journeys:
LIVE, LOVE, LEARN, LEAVE a LEGACY.
Enjoy packing for your journey. Don’t forget to leave some space
in your suitcase for keepsakes, and space in your heart for soulmates ;-)

My Dearest Spikkel / My Liefste Spikkel
Congratulations on being accepted at the best residence at Tuks! I hope you are already super-duper excited to move
into the Pink Palace. This is the start of an amazing journey and I hope you grab it with both hands.
I am your Sport HK of 2015, and I’m proud to say that Magrietjie is known for their excellent sport abilities, and we
take our sport very seriously. Although winning is our main focus, we see it as the reward for all the passion, time and
effort we put into it.
We partake in various sports activities at Magrietjie including hockey, soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball and ienk
athletics. ”Drastoel” is one of Magrietjie’s proud sporting events. We have won the Drastoel trophy too many times to
count, and I know with the energy of the Spikkels of 2015, we will be crowned as champions yet again.
The sport ladies form a special bond because sport offers great opportunities to get to know your fellow-Magrietjies
a little better. We go through the blood and sweat together, and will fight till the end for our residence. The sport activities are also all about the fun and enjoyment, and of course playing the game you have a passion for. I really hope
you will get the chance to experience this.
My motto for 2015 is: “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space”. In this new chapter of your
life, my advice to you is to take risks, be open minded,
try new things and find yourself.
Audrey Hepburn once said:
“I believe in Pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in being strong when everything
seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are
the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day
and I believe in miracles.”
I’m so excited to meet you! :)
Good luck with the exams and in preparing for your
time in the Pink Palace.

SISTERHOOD! That is the most important thing I want you to experience when you come to Magrietjie, your brand new
home. My name is Izanne and I am your House Internal and Clothing HK. Congratulations on being placed in the best
residence at Tuks! I am looking forward to welcoming you to our Pink Palace!
My aim for this year is to make you feel at home in Magrietjie, and to help you bond with your fellow-Magrietjie sisters
through fun activities that I will be organising. I have tons of exciting and fun-filled activities planned for you such as
floor sleepovers, movie nights, mother-and-daughter day, internal weekend, and much more!
Of course I will also ensure that you look stunning in your brand new Magrietjie clothing. Every week we live one of
our special traditions known as Pink Thursdays. This is the day of the week when all the Magrietjie ladies proudly wear
their pink Magrietjie house shirts to campus. It’s wonderful to be able to spot your sisters from afar in their pink shirts
and everyone on campus knows and recognises us (and envy that we have the funkiest, brightest, most beautiful
colour of all the residences). I can’t wait to see you in your new Magrietjie shirts!
I want to encourage you to come with an open mind and with an open heart, because you are going to meet so many
different ladies with their own unique backgrounds and personalities.
Acceptance is one of the core values of Magrietjie and this is a place where you will be accepted for who you are. It’s
also a place where you are going to accept others, despite the differences between you.
I would like to leave you with the following quote by Harvey MacKay:
“Life is too short to wake up with regrets.
So love the people who treat you right.
Forget about those who don’t.
Believe everything happens with a reason.
If you get a chance, take it.
If it changes your life, let it.
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would
be worth it. “
With that said, I want you to be ready for a life-changing experience! A motto we live by is: My alles vir altyd vir Magrietjie.
I hope that soon you will also understand the passion that we
have for Magrietjie and that one day you can live by that motto and have that same passion.
I’m excited to meet you! Ek sien uit om julle te ontmoet!

Dear Spikkels
Congratulations on being selected as a member of Huis Magrietjie. You are on the brink of one of the most exciting
adventures of your life! It is both an honour and a privilege to be a Spikkel and to carry the name of Magrietjie.
I am your Media and Administration HK member. Part of my Media portfolio entails the regular updating of
Magrietjie’s website as well as sending out newsletters to our alumni. As part of my Administration portfolio, I am,
amongst other things, responsible to ensure that the paperwork regarding your room placement is in order and will
also be responsible for parking allocations should you be so fortunate to bring your own car to university.
Magrietjie is more than a residence. It is not just a place to sleep and study. Magrietjie is going to become your home
away from home, with friends that will become family and sisters that will remain with you for life.
At this stage, you may not realise how incredible the journey that lies before you truly will be, but know this: “It doesn’t
matter how you plan it; it doesn’t matter how you envision it; without even knowing it, sometimes life has a way of
finding you, with exactly what you need or exactly
who you need.” You are about to meet many people,
some of who will shape and influence the person
you are to become.
You may not yet understand the passion, pride or
love we share for Magrietjie, but I can assure you
once you join us in our Pink home, these reasons will
become evident. So, get ready for a year filled with
magical adventures, new friendships and memories
that will last a lifetime.
You are in the hands of an incredible and extremely
capable HK. Every one of us is here to support you
and assist you with this huge transition. So, please
feel free to come to us, or contact us whenever you
are in need. We cannot wait to share this phenomenal year with you.

This is the beginning of the best years of your life. Your student years will be the most exciting years, and I am
so excited to be a part of the beginning of your journey at Huis Magrietjie.
As the Culture External HK member, my portfolio entails managing all the external culture activities in the
residence. These activities include Ienkmelodienk, Serrie and Serenade. Huis Magrietjie is always a very strong
competitor in culture, and I am looking forward to introducing you to your first experience - IENKMELODIENK!
Ienkmelodienk is a big load of fun where all the first year students in each residence perform in a sing-anddance show (after only one week in res!). It goes without saying that our Spikkels always do incredibly well! So, I
hope you bring your dancing shoes and your best dance moves, because we want you to shine and ‘be the best
that you can be’! If you can play an instrument, please bring it with so you can play in the Ienkmelodienk band!
Can I please ask your support in BRINGING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS FOR YOUR IENKMELODIENK PERFORMANCE:
• White TOMY takkies (see examples at http://www.bata.com/brand/tomy-takkies/)
• 1 can of pink spray-paint
I am looking forward to meeting you,
and I can’t wait for the fun to start!

It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the BEST residence at TUKS, namely Huis Magrietjie. You

Dearest prospective Spikkel / Liefste voornemende Spikkel
In the course of the next few months, you will become a part of the kind of sisterhood one struggles to find
anywhere else. The friends you make at varsity – and especially in res – will be the people who stay part of your
lives until long after you have ‘huppelled’ for the last time.
Adapting to the varsity lifestyle is a scary transition for many of the ladies who walk through our doors, but
Magrietjie’s mentorship programme strives to make this transition as smooth and easy as possible for our
Spikkels. As your Academic HK, I will assign a senior lady in the res to look after YOU – both in terms of your
academics, but also your overall wellbeing. This senior lady will not necessarily study the same course as you,
but she will be able to mentor you in terms of time management and finding that balance between studies
and student life. She will also make sure that any problem or doubts you may have are addressed and dealt
with in a caring manner. A Spikkel’s mentor often becomes one of her best friends – so feel free to look forward
to meeting her!
I sincerely hope that you are as excited to move in as we are to
meet you! The best of luck for you final exams, as well as your
final preparation for Magrietjie.

Magrietjie Traditions and Lingo
In 1982 this wonderful residence was opened - and over the past 32 years many great traditions were
implemented that we still value today. Our slogan “My alles vir altyd vir Magrietjie” (Giving my all for
Magrietjie) is something that every Magrietjie lady lives by. The special lady Maer-Grietjie is our mascot and
she represents Magrietjie, distinguishing us from all other residences. She was designed in 1982 and the
original porcelain Maer-Grietjie is kept in a safe in the residence. You will see her everywhere – amongst
other, she is painted on our building and printed on Magrietjie clothing items. PINK is our colour (any
shade will do!).
Traditions in Magrietjie:
‘Knikkel & Skitter’ (to be pronounced in Afrikaans): This is a special form of greeting by Spikkels to the
House Committee (HK) of Magrietjie during Welcoming week.
‘Huppel’ (translated to “skip”): The huppel is Magrietjie’s most popular and unique tradition.
All Magrietjies learn how to ‘huppel’ as soon as they arrive at the residence. The ‘huppel’ is a special song
that is sung while skipping across Magrietjie’s cement pathway (known as the ‘blad’) which is the pathway
between the residence and the front gate. You have to experience it to understand it! Learn the Huppel
song on page 30.
Pink Thursdays: On Thursdays every Magrietjie lady wears something pink – preferably our pink house
shirts. No one can miss the Magrietjie ladies on campus on a Thursday!
‘Groot JA’ (translated to Big YES): The popular ‘Groot JA’ remains one of our special zoep week traditions.
The tradition entails that, one special evening, all the lights in the residence are switched off, and then with
precision, Magrietjies organize with some individuals in the residence to switch their room lights on at the
exact right moment to spell the word "JA" (YES) across the residence building. We do this to show our RAG
partners that we agree (say YES) to a successful RAG partnership.
Residence Lingo:
Ienk: All first year students at the University of Pretoria (alias Tuks) are referred
to as Ienks.
Ienkmelodienk: The song-and-dance production that is performed on stage
only by First Years (only one week after your arrival) as part of an inter-residence
competition.
Spikkel: The unique name for a first year student in Magrietjie.
‘Sleep’ (a unique slang word to be pronounced in Afrikaans): This is the activity
when a men’s residence escorts a ladies’ residence to campus. It is also known
as a mass date.
RAG: An abbreviation for Reach Out and Give. We have many RAG activities
during which we help the less fortunate.
‘Blommetjies vou’ (an Afrikaans word that typically goes with RAG, and is translated as “folding flowers”): This activity is part of float building and entails taking
a small polystyrene ball and covering it with a piece of colourful plastic (making
it look like a flower) which is then pressed through chicken wire to cover the RAG
float.
What is a float? A float is a temporary structure built onto a truck that displays
a theme for all to see when driving through the streets in a carnival-type procession.
‘Zef troue’ (Zef wedding): During this activity we meet with our RAG partners
to celebrate the beginning of our RAG partnership. The dress code is Zef (which
means really ridiculous). So don’t forget to bring those zef clothes!
Zoep week: During this week we impress our RAG partners by spoiling them singing to them, giving them coffee, having socials, etc.
‘Drastoel’ (a unique word pronounced in Afrikaans): This unique university
word describes the event where we carry a steel frame (referred to as a chair)
in a competitive relay race against other female residences. Magrietjie is the
drastoel champions! We have won this event 19 years in a row, except for a
second place in 2009!

Spikkel of the Year
Dearest to-be Spikkel / Liefste Spikkel
As you might have heard, you are about to embark on the best
journey of your life. Being a Spikkel in House Magrietjie for
the past year has been the greatest time in my life and I hope
that you are very excited for what is to come.
Baie geluk met jou plasing as ‘n Spikkel in Magrietjie.
Dit is voorwaar ‘n prestasie om plek te kry in TUKS se top
dameskoshuis.
You have been accepted in, what according to me and many
others, is the best residence at TUKS; and that tells me that I
am talking to a very special and intelligent young lady. The
general feeling from our Spikkel group is that Magrietjie
has given us that final nudge into becoming an even better
young lady.
At Magrietjie I have experienced things that I never imagined
in my wildest dreams. Magrietjie, and the ladies of Magrietjie,
really complete you and push you to be the best that you can
be. We motivate each other, laugh together, cry together and are just always there for one another – a real sisterhood.
Magrietje is ‘n spesiale huis waar jy die studentelewe voluit kan ervaar! Neem die uitdaging voluit aan en neem deel
aan soveel aktiwiteite as moontlik.
I think one of the challenges for many new Spikkels is to find a balance between work and play. My advice is to
try and partake in as much as you can, but know where to draw the line and focus on academics (that is why we
are here after all). I always try to take
study breaks when there is an event
that I want to attend, so study until
you have to go and then when you
get back, continue studying until you
go to bed… Breaks are important!!!
Get ready for the greatest experience of your life!!! The Pink Passion
that everyone talks of is real, and
I can promise you within the first
week, you will take pride in being a
Magrietjie lady.

Roomies of the Year
Dear Spikkels / Liefste Spikkels
“What I love most about my home is who I share it with!”
Having a roommate is such a special experience.
A roomie is not just someone you share a room with, it’s
that one person that is by your side through all the happy and sad moments. Together you create unforgettable
memories and build a friendship that will last forever.
A roomie is that sister away from home. It is especially
that one who motivates you before a test, because she
can relate to the typical study stress we all experience
from time to time. A roomie is that person who accompanies you to the vending machine in the middle of the
night to go get snacks for a midnight feast. A roomie is
also about lying on one bed and just talking about anything and everything. She will always laugh at your stories, even if they’re not actually funny and she will sympathise with you even if things are not really that bad.
A roomie is your gym buddy and the person you share
Burger King with. She is also your tutor and the reason
to procrastinate. She understands when you say ‘forget
it’, waits forever when you say ‘just a minute’, and stays
by your side when you say ‘leave me alone’. Roomies are
those that laugh so loudly that people think they’re mad.
It is also all the inside jokes and the ‘remember when’s’…
These are some of the reasons people call us “Blondie and
Best friend”.
We hope you will have the same experience and share the
same passion we have for our Pink Palace, and for your
roomie. Grab the opportunity to share a room with open
arms! You will get much more than you ever imagined!

about residence life
You may have specific expectations of what life in a residence, and especially Magrietjie, entails.
The following will give you a realistic picture of what awaits you.
What is the role of a residence?
The main role of a residence is to offer an on-campus living environment that supports your academic
experience. Magrietjie will provide you with a family-like environment where you can feel safe and
secure. It will offer you opportunities for personal development and growth. In a residence you will
learn to adapt to different cultures while strongly identifying with Magrietjie as a subculture. One of
the benefits of a residence is that you will experience an active student life which will enrich you on
many different levels.
How to adapt to residence life?
• Arrive with an open heart and mind and be willing to adjust to a new environment where
different individuals live together under one roof.
• Be willing to share facilities (such as a bathroom and flat living area) with other individuals
(there are six ladies living in one flat and there are six flats on a floor).
• Be sensitive towards other individuals who have different needs and cultures than you.
• Be willing to actively participate in student life (e.g. sport, culture, socials or RAG).
• Prepare yourself for a noisy and busy environment, both inside the residence as well as in the
Hatfield area.
What is the purpose of Welcoming Week?
The main purpose of Welcoming Week is to empower you to adjust to your new living and academic environment. Our Welcoming Week programme is not an outdated and traditional approach
to orientation, but an empowering programme designed and approved by the University. Magrietjie’s Welcoming Week programme is voluntary, but we strongly recommend that you participate in
this well-structured programme as you will greatly benefit from it. The Welcoming programme is designed to provide you with specific and adequate information about the University and residence life.
It will also expose you to the supporting infrastructure needed for your academic performance as a
student and facilitate your social adjustment by introducing you to the various facets of student life
and opportunities on campus. During Welcome week you will follow an academic programme during
the day, and a residence programme in the evening.
36
What does Welcoming Week entail?
• Arrive with a willingness to make new friends and get to know as many of your fellow Spikkels as possible.
• Be prepared for no “free” time as you will follow a structured programme for the entire week.
You will, however, have some private time as scheduled within the programme.
• Have a willingness to participate in all the activities, even if it may be out of your comfort zone (for example
to chat to people you don’t know).
• Come fully energized as Ienkmelodienk takes place just a week after your arrival.
• Be prepared for an extremely busy two weeks with an overload of new information, but which will most
definitely be worth your while.
• After Welcoming week, RAG week starts. As you should know by now, we are ragging with Mopanie.
• Each residence gets the opportunity to perform their Ienkmelodienk on Saturday 24 January 2015, in the
Amphi theatre. Your parents are most welcome to watch you perform and you will be able to provide them
with an exact time of your performance 3 days prior to the event.
• On Saturday, 31 January 2015, we will be having our RAG procession. Your parents are welcome to be a
spectator somewhere along the route to cheer you on.
When can I go home for the first time?
Your first open weekend is 7-8 February as soon as your academic commitments for the day is done.
This depends on your individual time table.
What else do I need to know?
• On Monday evenings there are Think Pink Sessions for Spikkels. The members of the house are also invited
to join in on the fun. These sessions will help you to bond with your fellow Spikkels, adjust to university life
and grow as a person. We really encourage you to attend these sessions as it will add great value to your life.
• Each quarter there is a compulsory house meeting for all house members.
• Study times are compulsory. Study times are from Mondays to Wednesdays from 19:00 to 20:30, and then
again from 21:00 to 23:00. Study times are implemented in order to develop a healthy study routine to
ensure the academic success of our First Years. If you have special commitments during study time, you have
to get special permission from your First Year Guardian.
• Accordingly, Spikkels have a curfew of 23:00 from Monday to Wednesday every week.
• If you do not adhere to the rules and regulations of the University or the house rules of Magrietjie, disciplinary
action will be taken against you which can result in a fine, community service or even expulsion.
Remember to be open-minded and be willing to share in new experiences.
Don’t miss out on anything that Magrietjie has to offer!

Magrietjie is one of the female residences at the University of Pretoria. It is situated in 1107 Prospect Street
in Hatfield. Magrietjie is walking distance from campus, shopping centres, book stores, banks, restaurants
and churches.
When do I have to pay my accommodation fees and how much is it?
Residence applications and payments are handled by the Client Service Centre (CSC) at the University of Pretoria.
Please check directly with the University as residences do not take responsibility for this.
What is a “Spikkel”?
A “Spikkel” is our residence’s unique and special name for our First Year Students.
What should I bring along?
You need to bring your own personal belongings (clothes, personal hygiene products etc.). You also need to bring
your own bedding (single beds and mattresses are provided) and curtains (optional). Bring enough clothes and
personal items for four weeks as you may not get the opportunity to go home or buy new items. You don’t need to
bring any furniture as your room will be equipped with a study desk and chair. Optional items to bring include a
study lamp, fridge, computer, fan or heater. You might not need to bring these items immediately. It may be wise
to settle in your room for a couple of weeks and then decide what additional items you need to make your life or
room more comfortable. You will also be requested to bring certain specific items as stipulated at the end of this
Spikkel book.
What will my room be like?
Each floor (floors 3 to 11) in Magrietjie consists of six flats. Each flat has six ladies living in it. Each flat consists of a
bathroom and toilet, as well as a lounge and kitchen area. A room consists of a bed, study desk and chair, a built-in
cupboard and a wash basin. Most Spikkels will be allocated to a double room, which means you will share the room
with another Spikkel. Magrietjie has limited single rooms available for Spikkels.
How are rooms allocated?
The First Year Guardian allocates Spikkels to specific rooms. When you receive your Spikkel book, you have to complete the Spikkel questionnaire and mail it back to the First Year Guardian (see postal address in the editorial letter).
Based on this information, room allocations are made. We take into consideration: a) field of study b) whether you
know someone you would like to share with c) your interests and personality d) your reasons for special requests.
Special requests should be indicated on the Spikkel questionnaire.
Can I get a single room?
Unfortunately only a few single rooms are available and you will most likely be allocated to a double room. Experience has shown that ladies who share a room adapt quicker to residence life, especially during the first 6 months
when things are very new and hectic. It may be to your benefit to share a room with someone who studies the
same course. This enables you to study together, share notes and motivate one another. Great care is taken when
selecting roommates and very seldom we have to make adjustments because ladies do not get along.

Will I go through a welcoming programme?
Yes, Magrietjie (and all other residences) follows a University-approved welcoming programme at the beginning of
the year. This is a most valuable programme necessary to welcome new students into residence and university life.
What facilities are available in Magrietjie?
Magrietjie has a recreation hall, dining hall, sitting room, television room, IT lab, coin-operated telephones, laundry
room, vending machine, swimming pool, a beautiful front lawn and tight security.
Will I be safe in Magrietjie?
Magrietjie offers one of the safest accommodation options available. The University of Pretoria offers strict security
in and around the residence to ensure the safety of the ladies and their possessions. Curfews are maintained in the
residence ensuring that late nights can be devoted to studying and resting. Each Magrietjie resident receives a student
card that will provide her with access into Magrietjie. There are security guards available 24 hours a day and extra
security is arranged during special events and functions on the premises.
Are First Year Students allowed to have cars…and where can they park?
Yes, you can bring a car. However, you don’t need a car because Magrietjie is walking distance from campus, shops,
book stores, banks, restaurants and churches. Residents of Magrietjie can apply for parking at the beginning of the
year and will receive a parking disc that will allow you to park your car inside the fenced Magrietjie premises.
Can I stay in Magrietjie during University Holidays?
Student accommodation covers academic terms only and you will have to vacate your room during holiday periods.
Students who wish to remain in the residence during the holidays must apply to the Department of Residence Affairs
and Accommodation. If Magrietjie receives holiday guests (external visitors) you will have to remove all your personal
belongings from your room for the duration of the university holiday period. More information about holiday arrangements is made available in the residence before each holiday period. This usually only happens once a year.
May I bring my pet to Magrietjie?
Unfortunately, no pets are allowed on residence grounds (this includes fish, hamsters, snakes etc.). But our House
Parents have a dog (Rommel) and a bird (Magnum) you can play with!
Can friends visit me in Magrietjie?
Female friends can visit you in Magrietjie, except during study hours. Men are not allowed to visit you inside the
Magrietjie building. If a man (for example brother or father) needs to fix something in your room or carry something to
your room, you will have to get special permission from the Primaria or the House Parents. Once permission has been
obtained, you have to make an announcement on the intercom system to inform the ladies on your floor that a man
will be present on the floor for a few minutes.
Any other important information I need to know?
• It is recommended that you obtain insurance to cover personal property at Magrietjie, as the University is not
responsible for the damage, destruction or loss of personal belongings.
• You are responsible for the condition of your room. If holes are drilled or nails knocked into surfaces resulting in
damage, the cost of repairs will be charged to your student account.
• You may be expected to vacate your room during holiday periods when holiday guests stay in Magrietjie. Limited
storage is available for large items like fridges.
• It is advisable to keep your room locked at all times. You have to use your student card to access the premises
through the front gate as well as the door in the foyer. You have to use your room key to access your own room.
• Never lend your room keys or student card to others and don’t give strangers access to the premises.
• It is your responsibility to acquaint yourself with the University rules pertaining to residences, including
Magrietjie’s house rules.

Dear Spikkel / Beste Spikkel
Meet our
Rag
Partners
Since Magrietjie and Mopanie will be RAGging together in 2015, we thought it best to share some information about
Mopanie with you. Mopanie is a male residence that was established in 1969. Over the last 45 years, we have developed
into a top residence filled with members who have the residence’s ethos firmly vested in our hearts. Some of the verses in
the ethos, which we value the most, are that of being an officer and gentleman who has emotional intelligence and who
strives to always better himself and give everything.
Mopanie embraces the motto: “Through Unity Still Higher”. For any Mopaan, this means that by standing together, we
can achieve greatness. This has been proven by being named the top male residence at the University of Pretoria in 2009,
2011 and in 2013 (2014 results not yet available at the time of writing this message).
We are looking forward to our RAG partnership with House Magrietjie! The men of Mopanie are very excited to work with
the ladies of Magrietjie. We trust that our partnership will lead to special friendships that will last a lifetime. We believe
that with Magrietjie at our side, we will have the perfect start to the year, and we trust that you will experience the same.
We wish every Spikkel a fantastic first-year in Magrietjie. The men of Mopanie are looking forward to meeting you in 2015!
