RESEARCH
Student Perception of Fitness Testing and Lifetime Fitness Goals
The purpose of this study was to determine student perceptions of the importance of fitness
testing and the association of fitness testing to students making lifetime fitness goals. The
majority of teachers use fitness testing for students to see their current fitness levels and some
even use these tests so students can track their fitness progressions (Keating & Silverman,
2004). The purpose of fitness testing is to encourage student participation, keep records of
students' physical abilities, and assess teacher instruction (Keating, 2003). Moreover, physical
educators implement some form of fitness testing, such as FITNESSGRAM, or some other
fitness test that educators feel is appropriate for their classroom (Keating & Silverman, 2004).
