A typical group of riders heading out to do trail maintenance: Becki Krueger, Jennifer Kauth,
David Jones, John Turner, Pat Reinebach, Mary K Church, Linda Davis, Madison Kauth.
Local Back Country Horsemen Invite Area Trail Riders
Members of NEMO River
Valley Chapter, local unit of
Show-Me Missouri Back
Country Horsemen
(SMMBCH), invite area trail
riders to learn more about this
service organization.
This group collaborates with
Corp of Engineers managers at
Mark Twain Lake to promote
the missions of its parent
organizations, SMMBCH and
Back Country Horsemen of
America--to protect Missouri’s
equestrian trails through
service, education, and
advocacy.
As a result of this alliance
with Corp of Engineers, NEMO
River Valley Chapter members
do a large part of the
maintenance of Joanna and
Lick Creek Trails, including
the popular Log Cabin and
Prairie Loops, and the Mt.
Pleasant Cemetery. Other
outcomes of this partnership
are seven equestrian camp
sites, hitch rails, and restrooms
near the Frank Russell Trail
Head horse stalls; restroom,
water hydrant, hitch rail, and
tables at Spalding Trail Head;
and maps and signage at
trailheads and at intersections
on the trails.
A component of NEMO River
Valley Chapter’s education
program includes a Youth Day,
where area youth can bring
their horses, learn about trail
safety and etiquette, proper
equipment, Leave No Trace
Environmental Ethics
principals, and ride the trails
at Mark Twain Lake. This is
offered annually, at no charge
to participants. Chapter Leave
No Trace trainers are also
available for area community
and school events, at no cost.
There is a good possibility
that if you trail ride on
Missouri’s public lands, you are
benefiting from the
commitment one of the nine
local chapters in our state.
Membership is growing as
responsible riders realize the
need for trail advocacy as
agencies become financially
strapped. Every membership
is important; not all members
chose, or are able, to do the
physical work. Members ride
their horses and mules to
perform trail maintenance, and
there is camping, trail riding,
eating, and camaraderie with a
group of service-minded horse
enthusiasts. Area horsemen
who want to learn more about
this organization are invited to
attend NEMO River Valley
Chapter’s re-organizational
meeting: Sat., Jan. 17 @
Boudreaux Visitor Center,
Route J @ Mark Twain Lake;
social time 5:00; carry-in
dinner 6:00; meeting 7:00. For
more information, contact local
officers: Mary K Church 573406-2566; Becki Krueger 660727-3295; Wayne Lake, 573985-7132, or visit
www.showmebch.org. Find us

FARM BILL AND
DECISIONS
Time continues to roll on
and it seems to do that
faster as I get older. There
are some decisions that are
going to need to be made as
part of the 2014 Farm Bill
sooner than you think so
let’s talk about that now.
If you haven’t been able
to attend at least 1 Farm
Bill Meeting {more than 1
is better}, you time is
running out soon. Most all
of these counties will be
having at least one more
meeting coming up this
month so don’t lose out –
make plans to attend it.
Landowners have the first
decisions to make by
February 27th and that is
whether or not to update
your base acres and
program yield. Even if
you’re still deciding
between the PLC and ARC
programs, the base and
yield decisions are simple
and need to be made now.
There are a couple of
computer aided decision
tools on different web sites
to assist you there. The one
is at
https://usda.afpc.tamu.edu/
and keep in mind you can
put it the information to
figure your base and yields
first so that decision can be
made. The USDA Farm
Service Agency {FSA}
website has a couple simple
spreadsheet tools to
accomplish this also or you
can contact me
([email protected]) and
I can e-mail them to you.
Remember you can’t
increase your base acres
but can switch them to
different crops based on
what you planted in the
years 2009 to 2012. You can
update your program yield
by figuring your yields from
2008 to 2012. Finally, keep
in mind this is your
decision to make and not
the FSA’s office. If you have
any questions or need some
help with this or using the
decision tool, contact your
local Agricultural Business
Specialist.

opinion without the
discomfort of
thought”!
