Communication from the Bishop
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The family around the world today faces tremendous challenges. In
Latin America, where Christian values remain important, many families
are wounded by hostility from the surrounding environment and by
broken relationships within the family. Yet throughout the hemisphere,
the Church continues to point the way to Christ as the source of hope and healing within the family and in society.
Many family and catechetical ministry projects funded by the Collection for the Church in Latin America offer
families and communities a way to strengthen, affirm, and celebrate their life together in faith, offering a different and
hopeful vision of relationships with one another and with God.
In Cuba, migration and economic pressures are only a few of the many internal and external circumstances that pose threats to Catholic
families, as they strive to practice and share their faith. A grant requested by the Archdiocese of Havana is addressing these challenges
by forming family pastoral ministers who are helping nourish families, so they can live an authentic, integrated experience of faith at
home and in the wider community.
Through this project, the Archdiocese of Havana placed an increased focus on family ministry, supporting ninety-eight communities
with existing programs. Monthly, one-day meetings are held with the communities, which include workshops, interactive exercises, and
best practices for family ministry. The project also promotes the Rosary and prepared people for both the National Day of Families held
in May and the Annual Diocesan Gathering of Families held in June of 2014. In addition to the monthly meetings, a separate retreat was
held for the facilitators of the groups that work with young couples.
Our Diocese will take up this collection the weekend of January 24-25, 2015. Please be generous in this collection and take this
opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you
and God bless you.

January 22 is the anniversary of the Supreme Court Decision Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton which effectively legalized the
taking of innocent human life in the womb on demand and at any point during the pregnancy. Please see the bulletin for more
information.
Failure to defend and protect the dignity of every human person from conception to a natural death diminishes all of us and
endangers the life of every human being. For more information on the various threats to the dignity of the human person, please

UPDATE ON UKRANIAN CLOTHING COLLECTION
FOR ORPHANS
On October 17, 2014 SSPP parishioners sorted and packed over 40
boxes of clothing and shoes weighing over 2000 pounds that were
donated by parishioners the previous four weeks.
In early December these boxes arrived in the Ukraine and were
distributed to those children in need. You can see the pictures of our
boxes being unloaded in the Ukraine on the Peace & Social Justice
page of the parish website www.sspeterandpaul.net
In the following letter addressed to our parishioners, Tatiana
Goryacheva, President of the volunteer movement “Humanitarian
Project Ukraine” expressed her gratitude for all that was done here at
SSPP for the Ukrainian children.
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY
Do you have a good, used lap-top computer
and/or mouse that you would be willing to
donate to a transitional housing family that
really needs one? Please know that we
work with The People's Resource Center,
an organization of high-integrity that will
clean the computer of all your personal information before it
is given to a family. Some families just need a good-working
mouse for their computer to work adequately, so a donation of
any number of them is also appreciated. To donate or to inquire
further about this request, please call Jack Flowers at 630-3554886.
Dear Deacon Joe Verdico and parishioners of Saints Peter & Paul
Catholic Church,
Legion of Mary
Our Lady of Sorrows Praesidium…
Let me turn to you with words of deep gratitude for the big prayer
support, as well as for the aid that you have provided to Ukrainian
orphans by gathering a large number of clothing and footwear for
them. We understand that only people of spiritual generosity and
mercy are capable of such good deeds.
We welcome you to join us in praying the
rosary and devotional prayers in the spirit of
faith and in union with our Blessed Virgin
Mother, as we fulfill the spiritual needs of our
parish community. The Legion of Mary is the
largest worldwide apostolic association of lay
people in the Catholic Church who are devoted
to our most Blessed Virgin Mother. Meetings
are held every Monday evening from 6:30-8:00pm in the
Ministry Center, Room 227, upper level. Contact Paulette Shea
at 630-718-2127 if you have any questions.
Clothing and footwear collected by your parishioners is transferred by
our charity organization "Humanitarian project Ukraine" to Ukrainian
children who have lost their parents as a result of the war in Donbass,
and also to orphans who have been evacuated from the military operations zone to the peaceful regions of Ukraine, where there is no war.
Clothing and footwear are also transferred by our volunteers to children with disabilities who have suffered from war most of all.
We understand that specific people stand behind the collection and
shipment of such a large number of children’s items to Ukraine, people
with a deep faith in God who helped unknown children on another
continent. We are sure that every one of those people who brought
clothes for suffering Ukrainian children, with a heavy heart shares the
tragedy in Ukraine with us.
Thank you to each of you! Our hearts beat in unison with your hearts!
Today there is a lot of grief in Ukraine. The country is really on the
verge of a humanitarian catastrophe. Churches are destroyed, schools
and kindergartens no longer operate and pensions as well as large
families benefits are not paid in depressed regions of Ukraine.
The most scary thing is that children suffer from war most of all. Children from separated regions of Ukraine do not have enough food, they
have no bread, water, they have forgotten what toys and sweets are
like. They do not have warm clothing and footwear, because volunteers were taking children with only the clothes on their backs during
the shelling, without enough time to take other things with them.
Your aid delivered to Ukraine is invaluable. Let the Lord be with you!
And our enormous gratitude to all parishioners!
Tatiana Goryacheva,
President of the volunteer movement "Humanitarian project Ukraine "
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
In the Gospel today, Jesus asks “What are you
looking for?” Often we are looking for happiness
in very selfish ways, but we find that when we
look for ways to make others happy, it is then
that we truly become happy.
As you place your gift in a Society of St.
Vincent de Paul envelope, know that you are a
sign of God’s love to those who are suffering
and you give them reason to believe and to
trust.
Please continue to help us by placing a donation
in a green envelope found at the side and rear
entrances of the church and chapel. We may be
contacted by calling 630-355-1081.
Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a
Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to
grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who
are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed
Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul.

Mark’s Gospel Corner
Today we begin Mark's Gospel Corner, a brief commentary on Mark’s Gospel which will be read
each Sunday beginning January 25th, during this Liturgical Year, with brief pauses during Lent and
the Easter Season.
Why is Mark’s Gospel referred to as the first catechism? Mark’s Gospel, in particular, spells out
what it means to be a disciple in a very clear way, particularly the section between Chapters 8:22 and
10:52. Prior to this point, although the demons recognize who Jesus is, and the reader of the Gospel
recognizes who Jesus is, the disciples are increasingly blind to his true identity, but more about that
in weeks to come.
Tradition states that Mark’s Gospel was written in Italy around 65-70 AD, after the death of Peter.
His audience consisted of non–Palestinian Christians of pagan origin. Mark does not refer back to the
Old Testament, like Matthew does. He also takes time to explain Jewish customs, geography, names,
and the Gospel message to non-Jews. Mark’s references to persecutions in Chapters 8, 10 and 13 are mirrored in the persecutions
suffered by early Christians in Roman provinces. The persecution of these early Christians forms the impetus for writing the Gospel,
a Gospel of hope.
This year under Mark’s Gospel Corner in the bulletin, we will explore Mark's major themes or message, how that message is
delivered, and its implications for us. If you have questions, send a note to Bob at [email protected].

Saints Peter and Paul School News
Saints Peter & Paul Catholic School –
Parent Testimonials
“We transferred our son to SSPP School
from the Naperville public school system
and couldn’t be happier with this decision.
Our son loves attending this school! The
atmosphere is supportive, respectful, and
nurturing. The talented and dedicated
teachers and staff help students become
fully accountable for their work and actions to prepare them well
for high school and beyond, academically, morally, and
spiritually.”
-Jane Aygun
“All 5 of our children have attended Saints Peter and Paul. Two
have graduated and three are currently attending SSPP. We
strongly believe SSPP is a wonderful school. Our children have
had a seamless transition into the workload of high school and then
a transition into college for which they were very well
prepared. The teachers at Saints Peter and Paul have taught them
effective study habits and have challenged them. Our children have
made lifelong friends. But most of all, Saints Peter and Paul School
has taught them the morals and values consistent with what they are
learning at home and a love for our Catholic faith.”

Eucharistic Adoration Evening of
Recollection for Adorers
Monday, January 19 at 7pm
Saint Isaac Jogues Church
306 W. Fourth Street, Hinsdale, Illinois
The Very Reverend William De Salvo,
V.F., pastor of Saint Isaac Jogues and
Dean of the South DuPage Deanery of the
Diocese of Joliet, along with the Adoration
Committee, invite you to an Evening of
Recollection on Monday, January 19th
at 7pm at Saint Isaac Jogues Church.
The event is co-hosted by the adoration
committees of Holy Trinity Parish in
Westmont, Visitation Parish in Elmhurst, and Saint Mary of
Gostyn Parish in Downers Grove.
The evening will focus on Eucharistic Adoration, and
taking the “fruits of contemplation and adoration” out into
the world, into our daily lives. The Nashville Dominican
Sisters will join us, and speak to us about Eucharistic
Adoration — how to “do it,” and how to get more out of
your time in front of the Blessed Sacrament so that you can
more fully put your faith in action. We will begin with
Benediction at 7pm in Church, followed by the Sisters’
presentation. The evening will conclude with a reception to
greet the sisters, and to provide the opportunity to get to
know other adorers throughout the area. It should prove to
be a wonderful evening for all. EVERYONE IS
WELCOME!
Whether or not you are an “old-pro” at Eucharistic
Adoration, a new comer to the practice, or merely interested
in learning more, this evening is for you!
Please join us! There is no cost for the evening. But,
registration is important for our plans. Contact Cathy
Booth at Saint Isaac Jogues to reserve your place: 630323-1248 OR [email protected].
DONATE YOUR USED CAR
Call Naperville CARES to donate your old car.
Naperville CARES will take your car, repair it, and
give it to a person in need. High priority is given to
those clients who need a car to drive to a job or

requesting car donations sell your car, Naperville CARES
actually gives your car to a worthy recipient. Enjoy the
satisfaction of knowing you have helped someone remain
independent. To donate, call 630-369-0200.
