Houston Grand Opera proudly presents Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, January 23, 2015 - February 8, 2015, at the Wortham Theater.
Sung in Italian with projected English translation.
When Puccini heard the story of a young Japanese girl who sacrifices
everything for a faithless U.S. Navy lieutenant, he knew he had found a
winning idea for a new opera and immediately began work on Madame
Butterfly. It would become one of the most beloved operas of all time.
Puccini’s score, infused with atmospheric Eastern motifs, is mesmerizing.
From the passionate Act I love duet, to Butterfly’s steadfast declaration of
her love, “Un bel di,” to the tender, anticipatory beauty of the “Humming
Chorus,” this is opera for the ages.
Stationed in Nagasaki, American Lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton enters into a
temporary marriage with Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly), a fifteen-year-old Japanese girl. Butterfly naively supposes that the marriage is permanent;
when her husband leaves her, he promises to return and she believes
him. When he does come back three years later, it is with his new American wife, Kate; they have learned through Sharpless, the American consul, that Butterfly has borne Pinkerton’s son—and they have come to take
the child. Butterfly responds in the only way her sense of honor will allow.

After Alberta Ballet’s performances, Houston Ballet heads to Alberta from

Love Lies Bleeding is a spectacular dance triumph that is a sensationally
entertaining. The production takes audiences on a wild ride, an emotional
rollercoaster of theatrically dynamic tableaux. The non-stop parade of
over 150 dazzling costumes by Martine Bertrand provides a glorious riot
of color and invention. Audience members can expect to see stylized sequined Dodger uniforms, glittery Egyptian loincloths and a roller-skating

Although rooted in the life and career of the British pop icon, Love Lies
Bleeding is more than a simple biographical narrative; it’s also a probing
examination of the cult of celebrity and the triumphs and challenges of
superstardom. The main character is an obsessive Elton John fan and
the ballet itself is a fantasy in which he experiences the highs and lows
of his idol’s roller-coaster career. Set in a vast, dark theatre littered with
mementos, artifacts, and remembrances of past glories, the ballet poetically depicts the dramatic landscapes of a classic series of Elton John/
Bernie Taupin songs which have deeply inspired billions of music lovers
around the world.

The 18th century marked the birth
of comfort as an everyday concept,
evidenced by innovations in everything from furniture trends to sartorial styles. Objects from the period
were increasingly designed to improve people’s physical or emotional wellbeing simply by making
life more comfortable. Rienzi’s fall
exhibition, Comfort and the Eighteenth-Century Interior, draws from
the Museum’s permanent collections to showcase porcelain, silver,
furniture, textiles and works on paper that demonstrate the idea as
it was developed through art and
material culture.
This exhibition is organized by
Christine Gervais, Associate Curator of Decorative Arts and Rienzi,
and Misty Flores, Curatorial Assistant. Accompanying the exhibition is Rienzi’s 15th Anniversary
Symposium, Creatures of Comfort:

Samurai: The Way of the Warrior
at Houston Museum of Natural Science
Houston Museum of Natural Science reveals samurai brigandine, a sort
of light armored vest that samurai wore under their suit of armor for extra
protection in battle, as one of 80 exquisite objects on display in Samurai:
The Way of the Warrior at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
The special object is a unique piece and must have been made for a
high-ranking member of the warrior class due to the use of extremely
expensive silks and dyes and the innovative tailoring methods employed
when compared to the standards in use at that time in Japan. In fact,
during the restoration, sewing techniques were discovered that were very
different from those commonly used in similar garments during this time
period; techniques that turned out to be very close to those used at the
time in the Western world.
The battle gear of the samurai was an important signifier of leadership,
authority and social position, even when worn in peacetime. The samurai
may be gone; but why does the fascination with this elite echelon of society live on? David Temple briefly explains the fascination and the history
behind this specific suit of armor, such as the alleged place where it was
made, the name of its owner, the weaponry associated with it, and, finally,
when and where it was used during this unique opportunity to photograph
the Brigandine.

“Sharks are misunderstood. The hype in the classic horror film Jaws and
misinformation in other movies and documentaries have had a huge impact on the perception of this very important group and their role in our
oceans and relationship with people,” said Wes Tunnell, curator of marine
biology at HMNS. “This fictional representation has caused most people
to fear the oceans and not want to enter into the shark’s environment. It is
true that there are shark attacks on people in small numbers each year;
however, the real threat is now in the opposite direction.”
Sharks are in a state of crisis all over the world as a result of man’s activities. The over-exploitation of shark resources, along with human-induced
damage to the marine ecosystem globally, has grave implications for
shark populations everywhere. Shark!, a special exhibition, educates visitors about the important role of sharks in the world’s oceans, with special
reference to sharks in the Gulf of Mexico.
At the beginning of the exhibition, visitors feel as if they are in a shark cage
that is in the ocean. Shark cages have evolved from being equipment
originally built many years ago to protect divers while working in “shark
infested” waters, to protective cages for movie and documentary filming,
as well as research, and most recently, in ecotourism diving to see sharks

today, since guides within the ecotourism industry usually “chum” the waters around their boats and shark cages to attract sharks. Chumming is
the practice of throwing shark food, usually fish or fish parts, in the water
to bait or attract sharks. Learn more about this practice and experience a
great photo-opportunity that most people will never have in nature.
Experience two shark touch tanks – low aquariums made specifically to
give museum goers the opportunity to see small sharks up close. The
tanks are 9 feet in diameter and contain 700 gallons of seawater each,
with two kinds of sharks in them.

Texas State Aquarium and assistance from OCEARCH and the Harte

ROCO Presents Divas and Ballerinas
River Oaks Chamber Orchestra continues its ROCO Unchambered series with a performance on January 25 at 5:00 p.m. titled Divas and Ballerinas featuring ROCO violist Tawnya
Popoff, with pianist Charles Tauber. The concert includes revered pieces from the most
beloved composers of ballet and opera, but what unites the pieces are their ability to tell a
story. “As I’ve performed throughout the world, my eyes have opened to the universality of
the ‘human story’ as told through different cultures and different people,” said Ms. Popoff.
The performance includes music from Puccini, Bizet, Prokofiev and Stravinsky plus
Beethoven’s Variations on Magic Flute and music from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Ms.
Popoff concludes, “I seem to gravitate toward the storytelling side of the performing arts.”

Coming to America Through Galveston Island
The Heritage Society Houston presents Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through
Galveston Island now through January 31, 2015 at the Heritage Society Museum Gallery.
From 1845 to 1924, the Port of Galveston was a major gateway for American immigration.
This exhibition is the first of its kind to explore Galveston’s legacy as a port of entry on a national scale. It brings to light the little-known, yet rich, era of Galveston’s history and importance to the growth of Texas and the American Midwest. While Ellis Island’s location in New
York made it a natural port for Europeans, Galveston attracted a diverse group of people
from Europe, Mexico, South and Central America, and even Asia. The exhibition highlights
enduring themes in the history of immigration including the dangers of the journey, making
a life in a new land, navigating bureaucracy, and confronting discrimination. Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through Galveston Island is a traveling exhibition by the Bullock
Texas State History Museum presented in partnership with Humanities Texas. The Museum

Munro originally conceived the idea
for Field of Light in 1992 during a
trip through the red desert of central Australia, when he sketched
a landscape of illuminated stems
that would wait like dormant seeds
in a dry desert, to bloom at night.
The idea remained in his sketchbook until 2004, when he finally
had space and resources to execute it. It has since been specifically re-imagined for sites across
the globe. The Discovery Green
Field of Light comprises 4,500 radiant, frosted glass spheres atop
slender stems connected by illuminated fiber optic. The spheres and
stems wait quietly until dusk and
then bloom with gentle rhythms of
colored light as darkness falls over
the park.

Diavolo – Architecture in Motion, 8 p.m., Friday, January 9, 2015,

and actors brilliantly explore the space where reality ends and imagination
begins. Under Artistic Director Jacques Heim, who has choreographed
works for Cirque du Soleil, the company reinvents dance, re-imagines
theatre and redefines thrills. With outrageous and surrealistic sets playing
an intrinsic role in each work, Diavolo takes movement, athletics and daring to the extreme to create abstract narratives of the human condition.
For its return to Houston, the company will perform the final work of a trilogy created specifically for the Hollywood Bowl, titled Fluid Infinities, as
part of its program. Choreographed to Philip Glass’ Symphony No. 3, this
work is set on an abstract dome structure on which performers explore
metaphors of infinite space, continuous movement and humanity’s voyage into the unknown future. The dome’s organic pattern – which evokes
the craters of the moon, a honeycomb of bees, a shifting brain or an undiscovered starship – transports Diavolo’s performers and audiences into
a space that is otherworldly.

2015. Throughout history, humanity has been fascinated with the creatures that populate the world. In the ancient Americas, wildlife such as
jaguars, harpy eagles, and killer whales became symbols of divinity and
rulership and played significant roles in religion and society. The inventive ways in which animals were depicted in art provide a window into the
beliefs and practices of long gone cultures that never developed written
language and left few traces other than their art.

Drawing from the Museum’s significant Pre-Columbian collection, and
spanning nearly 5,000 years, the exhibition Fangs, Feathers, and Fins:
Sacred Creatures in Ancient American Art is the first time that these remarkable artworks-dating from 3300 BC to 1550 AD-will be brought together thematically at the Museum. More than 200 artworks in the exhibition demonstrate how the peoples of the ancient Americas viewed
themselves and the world around them. A 1,000-year-old feather tunic
from the Nasca people of Peru, intricate gold ornaments from the Tairona
culture of Colombia, and evocative ceramic vessels and stone monuments made by the Maya and Olmec of ancient Mexico will be revelationsm to many.

The Holocaust Museum Houston presents Birthrights Left Behind, now
through June 14, 2015. Determined to create a permanent impression
with her audiences, Washington, DC-area printmaker Pauline Jakobsberg uses her powerful prints -- full of tenderness, caring and humanity
balanced with pathos and grief -- both as a legacy to her relatives’ experiences during the Holocaust and to remind all that the human impulse to
remember our past cannot be fulfilled by giving universality to the individual history of specific people.
Inspired by memory drawings, journal sketches, artifacts and family tales
told by the Holocaust survivors of her husband’s family, Jakobsberg has
created art that leaves sweet, yet haunting memories, making her visions
a reality. By incorporating images from photographs and other documents
into her etched prints, she develops a story, reminding us of our inability
to grasp our past completely.
In Birthrights Left Behind, Jakobsberg poses the question: “Is it possible
to shape the future through memories of the past?” “Birthrights” is a selection of Jakobsberg’s work consisting of 20 original hand-pulled prints
using various printmaking techniques, ranging from engraving, etching,

Ice Age at Moody Gardens
Moody Gardens presents Ice Age from now through May 10, 2015. Ice
Age is an exciting and educational exhibition that invites you to travel
back in time to discover a frigid world, covered in ice and occupied by
mammoths, saber-toothed cats, bears, gigantic birds, cave people and
more.
Ice Age features life-sized animatronic animals, real fossils, some of
which can be touched by our guests, and cast skeletons set within elaborate Ice Age scenery.
The exhibition begins 2.5 million years ago when the Earth witnessed a
major environmental disruption, one that lead to dramatic evolutionary
changes to Earth’s life forms and forever shaped human history. Guests
then travel through galleries exploring the Megafauna, or giant Ice Age
animals; the Ice People, including Neanderthals and Cro Magnons; the
Tar Pits, the death traps of the Ice Age creatures; and the Megafaunal
Extinction, exploring the theories for why many animals of the Ice Age
became extinct.
This exhibition provides a unique and exciting walk through the Ice Age
epoch for families and visitors of all ages, closing with poignant discussion topics about Earth’s fragile climates and possible return of the Ice.
The Ice Return Gallery explores the prediction for another glacial period
in the current Ice Age, how global warming might tip the balance of nature
in a swifter, more dangerous direction, and what people can do to help
the planet.
“This new exhibit will take guests on an exciting journey through prehistoric times to encounter lifelike mammoths, saber-toothed cats, bears and
other creatures,” said John Zendt, president and CEO of Moody Gardens.
“The animatronics and information engage us and allow us to have fun
as we learn more about the latest scientific discoveries from the Ice Age.”
Ice Age was created by Imagine Exhibitions and Aurea Productions and
is curated and advised by world-renowned vertebrate paleontologist Dr.
Gregory M. Erickson. Professor Erickson is a leading expert on the biology of extinct organisms, mammals and dinosaurs in particular. He has
published nearly 100 professional papers, and participated in over 25 paleontological expeditions around the world.
Come experience firsthand the Ice Age animals of past and present, meet
the early humans that lived among them, and learn about the scientific
theories regarding the future of our planet. Ice Age is open daily to the

HPD is asking for your help in fighting bullying among kids.
HPD Senior Police Officer Joe Sanchez says there are three types of
bullying that parents should know
about: physical, emotional and cyberbullying.
Physical bullying involves someone physically assaulting a victim, whereas emotional bullying
involves an individual speaking
badly about someone, either by
hurting feelings or tarnishing one’s
reputation. Cyberbullying occurs
when a bully uses the internet or
social media to engage in emotional bullying.
Some of the signs a child is being
bullied include:
• The child doesn’t want go to
school. He or she may pretend to
be sick, offer excuses such as not
having done the homework, etc.
• The child comes home unusually hungry because a bully took
his/her lunch, money or the child
is scared to eat where the bully is
present.
• The child is depressed. The results of bullying can be serious. It
can cause children to isolate themselves, become depressed, and
give them a diminished sense of
self-worth.

at Houston Museum of Natural Science

Fabergé: From A Snowflake To An Iceberg is on exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. With the addition of over 150 new pieces, this
exhibition showcases 500 jeweled treasures from the world-renowned
McFerrin Collection. The exhibition presents a historical overview of the
works of the House of Fabergé, as well as the remarkable Russian history relating to the objects on display. Dozens of personal treasures of the
Romanov Family including Imperial pieces owned by Nicholas II, Alexander III and their family are featured.
The Art Car Museum, Houston
presents the exhibition, John Atlas: A Survey of Work 1969-2014,
on exhbiti now through February
2015.
Inspired by the ancient Scythian treasures unearthed during archaeological digs in Kerch on the north coast of the Black Sea, Peter Carl Fabergé
(1846-1920) first won acclaim for his historical pieces during the PanRussian Industrial exhibition of 1882. New to the collection is a lion’s
head charm created by one of Fabergé’s first workmasters Erik Kollin.
Fabergé went on to create original, exquisite objects of luxury for the elite,
as well as impeccably designed everyday objects. You can see hundreds
of these items— predominantly made for and use by the royalty—in the
McFerrin Collection.
From elegantly simple to breathtakingly ornate, the jewelry, clocks, picture frames, snuff boxes, cigarette cases, desk accessories, flower studies and carved hardstone animals in this collection were thoughtfully selected to exemplify extraordinary materials and workmanship. New to the
exhibition is a hand-held fan belonging to Queen Victoria.
Today, the House of Fabergé is best known for crafting Easter eggs in the
late 19th to early 20th centuries. Visitors to the exhibition will be happy to
see these stunning pieces are still on exhibition, some complete with their
“surprise”—including the stunning Imperial Diamond Trellis Egg, Kelch
Egg and Nobel Ice Egg.
At its height, the House of Fabergé employed more than 500 craftsmen
and designers in their Moscow and St. Petersburg workshops and sales
branches in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, Odessa and London.
Fabergé: From a Snowflake to an Iceberg is organized by the Houston
Museum of Natural Science with the McFerrin Collection.

John Atlas has been making art in
Houston, both painting and sculpture, for over four decades. This exhibition is the most comprehensive
show of his art assembled thus far
and spans his entire career from
his first serious work completed in
1969, to several large canvases
completed in the weeks leading up
to the installation of this show.
The exhibition consists of over
eighty paintings on canvas and
paper, and a number of sculptures
including wooden constructions
made as studies for objects that
appear in the paintings. Atlas’ mastery of color and composition, and
his ability to move from hallucinatory figuration to more surrealistic
and non-objective work is evident
throughout the exhibition.
John Atlas was born in 1952 in
Boston Mass. and moved to Houston with his family at age three.
His father, a doctor, worked in biomedical research for the National
Institute of Health in Boston, and
worked at the local V.A. hospital
upon arrival in Houston. He later
set up his private practice in Pasadena Tx. and commuted there from
Houston. Largely a self taught artist, Atlas dropped out of school at
age sixteen to pursue painting and
drawing full time. Over the years
his work has been shown here in
Houston at Sally Sprout Gallery,
Graham Gallery, Max Hutchinson
Gallery, as well as The Museum
of Fine Arts, Blaffer Gallery at the
University of Houston, and Sewall
Art Gallery, Rice University. He has
shown internationally in the exhibitions New Art from a New City:
Houston in Salsburger Kunstverein, Austria and Art from Houston
in Norway: 1982 Stavanger, Norway.

Hi everyone, I’m
Bones!!
“Bones” seemed an appropriate name for me when my foster mom found me in the road,
but I will looked forward to a
“Bones Magee” or “Mr. Bones”
even. See, I was abandoned to
fend for myself out in the country earlier this summer, and had
just about given up hope, until
a nice lady and her daughter
spotted me and turned out to
be my angels. They took me
in, cleaned me up, pulled splinters and mesquite thorns from
my sun burnt skin and fed me
lots and lots of delicious food!
These days I am looking pretty
darn handsome (toot toot), I am
happier than I have ever been in
my whole life, and I have put on
15 pounds (thus needing a new
name with a ring to it!). I play
well with my foster dog brother and sisters, big and small. I
love toys and treats, and even
though I have never had much
of my own until now, I am happy
to share and know there is more
where they came from. I’d be
great for older kids, but my energy level may be too much for
small children. I admit it, I get
the zoomies! I’m very smart and
eager to learn and please for
anyone that has time to spend

Zeke was picked up by a caring driver on Hwy 290 several
weeks ago after he saw Zeke
literally dodging cars speeding down the freeway. Covered
with ticks and fleas, numerous
skin lesions and thin as a rail,
Zeke stood quietly in the back
yard while he took in his new
surroundings. He is bug free
now, his coat is improving and
he has put on a little weight. For
a dog, Zeke is incredibily quiet.
He seldom whines or barks, but
he can be a bit dominant, particularly around food. Lying on
the floor in the bedroom, living
room, or kitchen is his specialty. And in some ways he is
very catlike in that he often approaches side ways and then
rubs his flank slowly against
your leg. We think he is around
two or so in age and appears
to be in good health. He is neutered, has all his shots, and
chipped. He just needs a good
home to love him for the special

Arizona: Sedona’s Trails -- Bring Your Pets!
The hiking trails in Sedona, Arizona are
some of the best anyone could hope to
find in the American Southwest. From
paths winding through the famous Red
Rock formations to more moderate trailheads along water, there’s a hike for everyone. With a wide variety of difficulty
and distance, beginners and expert hikers
will all find something new and wonderful.
And these hikes aren’t limited to humans!
All of the trails in Sedona are dog friendly,
making it the perfect place for travellers
who bring their best friends along for
adventures. However, there are a few
things that hikers of all skill levels should
keep in mind if they plan on bringing
along a four-legged companion. Hiking
is more strenuous than walking for dogs
as well as humans, so here are some tips
for making sure everyone stays safe and
happy on the hike!
First things first, if the owner is a beginner hiker, then it’s likely that their
dog is too. Make sure that the selected trail is appropriate in regards to
difficulty level. Hiking often includes inclines, uneven ground, and usually
longer distance than walking, so keep in mind that an eight mile hike might
be a little too much for a pup who’s more accustomed to an easy stroll
around the block! It’s also a good idea to hike during the morning or the
later afternoon when there are fewer people on the trail, especially if a pet
is not used to hiking during busier times!
A trip to Sedona in January or February makes hiking with your pet much
“cooler.” Sedona, during the spring,
summer, or fall months means slightly
warmer weather, and it’s important to
keep in mind the difference in how dogs
keep themselves cool. They can’t sweat
out their excess body heat that comes
from the exertion of hiking like people
can. This means that dogs require twice
as much resting time on the trail. This
gives them a chance to cool down and
pant out the heat before taking on the
next leg of the hike, which will lower the chances of them getting too warm
and possible suffering from heatstroke. Another important tip to keep in mind
is to keep them well watered. Dogs sometimes won’t drink all of the water
they require to stay hydrated, so be patient and make sure that a dog bowl
has made it into the hiking pack. This will make it easier for them to drink what
they need as you make your way along the trail. It cannot be stressed enough
how important it is to make sure your dog is rested and watered throughout
the hiking excursion!
If a traveller is invested in going on an all day hike even though they’ve brought
their dog to Sedona, this does not mean that plans need to completely change!

This morning my good friend said to me… Happy “Weird” Anniversary!
So true! It was one year ago today that I went in to Methodist Hospital
for my Bi-lateral mastectomy. Is this an anniversary? Is this a day to be

This is my second year to do the Komen Cure walk; a charity that raises
money and awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer. Ironically,
today is the year long anniversary that my girlfriend, Cristl Craig, had
surgery to remove her cancer. Even more ironic, the day I sign up for
the walk and try to raise money for this wonderful cause, she sends out
a fabulous email. Instead of me even trying to write what kind of year
she has had and the courage she has shown, I thought I would forward a
note she sent to her family and friends earlier today that describes what
a year it has been.

Galveston Historic Homes Tour
Galveston Historical Foundation will present the 37th annual Galveston
Historic Homes Tour Saturdays, May 7 and 14, and Sundays, May 8
and 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This year’s Coastal Style tour includes 9
houses featuring a variety of styles from an 1871 Gulf Coast Cottage to a
traditional Craftsman Bungalow built in 1924. As visitors tour the homes
they will hear about Galveston’s unique and eclectic architecture styles
and the influential and everyday citizens that built the houses that still
stand today.
Advance tickets for the tour are $20 each and $25 per person during
tour weekends. Numerous separately ticketed special events are also
being held in conjunction with the Galveston Historic Homes Tour including the First Impression Preview Sunset Tour, Moonlight and Martinis at
the Garten Verein Pavilion, the 7th annual Linen and Lace Mother’s Day
Brunch, Basement to Attic Behind the Scenes Tours of Bishop’s Palace,
Bike through History, Sally Wallace Preservation Awards and the Antique
Treasures Preview Party and Sale. Tickets for the 2011 Historic Homes

After telling Owner/Chef/Baker Scott Tycer that there’s nothing quite
like the smell and taste of hot just-from-the-oven bread with some real
butter or dipping sauce, he explained that it was an early socialization
experience stemming from a time when there might only be one kiln or
fire bricked oven for an entire village and folks would prepare their own
breads by hand and take them to the “baker” to cook them.
Houston Ballet’s sleek new Center
for Dance will hold a grand opening ceremony on Saturday, April 9
at noon with a ribbon cutting ceremony presided over by Houston
Mayor Annise Parker at 601 Preston Street in the heart of downtown
Houston’s Theater District. The
new, six-story, 115,000 square-foot
facility, designed with sustainable
features by globally-recognized architecture firm Gensler, will come
in around $46.6 million (an estimated $6.4 million under its original
projected budget of $53 million),
opening ahead of schedule. The
building will boast nine dance studios, a dance lab that seats 200 for
presentations as well as rehearsals, and artistic, administrative and
support facilities for Houston Ballet
