Words of Wisdom
The fullness of joy
is to behold God in everything.
—St. Julian
One in Faith, One in Hope, One in Charity
Together, as one family of God, we continue to build the
Kingdom of God here in South Florida. Because of you and
your stewardship through the Archbishop’s Charities and
Development Drive (ABCD), in the past year alone, you are
helping to train the largest group of seminarians the
Archdiocese has enjoyed in many years; through ABCD you are assisting our most
needy Catholic elementary and high schools, and you are continuing to support the
evangelization efforts within our migrant community in south Dade. Thanks to your
support of ABCD our Respect Life ministry continues to grow, and we continue to
minister to the seafarers and at the airports. These are extraordinary accomplishments –
all made possible because of you!
If you have not already responded to the letter sent to you by Archbishop Thomas
Wenski received by mail, please take time to consider your pledge for this year. Your
faithful and generous participation in the ABCD flows from God’s many blessings to
you and to those you hold dear. We ask for your continued support and invite you to join
us to be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity. Thank you.
The Road to Peace Bereavement Group
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton has a bereavement
group. This group allows those who have lost a
loved one a place to talk to someone who is
going through what you are feeling. The group is
a safe place where we, who are grieving, can
come together and share the pain, sorrow and
memories. In this way, we can begin the healing
process and move on with our lives. Call Florence at
954-755-9065 for more information.
The
Bereavement Group meets on Monday at 7 pm in
room 209 of the Religious Education Building.
Eucharistic Adoration needs Volunteers!

CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS ON THE SCRIPTURES
Archdiocese of Miami - Ministry of Christian Formation
January 18, 2015 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel reading John 1:35-42 [To be read aloud]
John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to
them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” — which translated means Teacher —,“where are
you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they
stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the
two who heard John and followed Jesus.
Brief commentary:
Last Sunday’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord brought to conclusion the Christmas season and inaugurated the
season of Ordinary Time, the season of the daily following of Jesus Christ along the way of his mission and
ministry. Being redeemed by Christ, vivified by the Holy Spirit and adopted by the Father at our baptism, we are
empowered by the Spirit and inspired by the example and teaching of Jesus to participate in the mission and
ministry of the Church. This mission and ministry of the Church are the extension and expansion of Jesus’. This
call to follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly and radically is expressed in all of today’s readings. Like Samuel we
hear God call us by name, and we are invited to respond with readiness and disposition, saying, “Speak, Lord, for
your servant is listening.” Like the psalmist we too exclaim, “Here I am, Lord, I have come to do your will.” Paul’s
reminds Christians that belonging to Jesus Christ involves the total self-donation to God, body, mind, heart, soul,
and life. Through and through the Christian – “joined to Christ” by baptism – is called to be a Temple of the Spirit,
glorifying God with all that a human person is. Like in Advent, the figure of John the Baptist appears again the
readings as the precursor and prophet of the Lord, pointing to him who is the true Light of the world. Yet, this Light
is the Lamb. To describe Jesus in such a way evokes at the very beginning of his ministry the notion of atoning
sacrifice, and points toward the ‘Passover’ of Jesus’ sacrificial death. Following John’s amazing words, two
decided to follow Jesus. To them and to us Jesus turns and asks, “What are you looking for?” These important
words should resound often in our lives, particularly in a society and time where we seem to seldom ask such
introspective and honest questions. For all who earnestly seek the truth, long for justice and mercy, yearn for
liberation, healing and salvation, thirst for joy and blessing and new life – for all seeking God – Jesus invites us to
‘stay’ with him saying, “Come, and you will see.” Perhaps it was because that meeting and encounter with Jesus
was so powerfully moving that even the time of day was remembered: “four in the afternoon.” It was a new
beginning of a kind that is totally unique. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry he comes as the one who lives out
perfectly the words of Samuel and of the psalmist, “God, I have come to do your will…” This season of Ordinary
Time we come to the One who is the perfect Servant of the Lord, the Lamb of God, and we say to him, “Rabbi,
where are you staying?” In turn he welcomes us, calls us to follow him along the way of his teaching, his mission
and ministry.
Today’s reading offers significant messages:
•
As we resume the season of Ordinary Time, our gaze is turned toward devotedly following Jesus Christ, the
Lamb of God who has come to do the will of the Father.
•
Jesus calls us to consider what we are looking for in life, and then invites us to seek the reign of God and its
righteousness above all things by following his teaching and example.
•
By the Spirit’s grace we can follow Jesus, saying to God, “I am here to do your will…speak, for I am
listening.”
For our shared or personal reflection:
After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings.
•
How do I hear the voice of God in my life? How can I, like Eli, invite others to respond to God’s call in their
lives?
•
What am I looking for? How can I more fully and radically seek God’s reign and its righteousness?
•
How can I be more decisively live in readiness and disposition to do God’s will, to live according to it?

January 18, 2015 ~ GOD’S WORD TODAY
“Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.” This refrain from today’s responsorial psalm is a
fitting mantra for all believers as Ordinary Time opens before us. The first reading recounts
the story of Samuel, who is told by Eli to respond to the Lord’s call with the words “Speak,
LORD, for your servant is listening.” The Gospel passage today recounts the call of the first
disciples, who declare that they have found the Messiah. This wonderful set of scripture
readings reminds us to stand ready to listen to the call of the Lord Jesus. As these words are proclaimed today,
let us make the words of the psalmist our own and declare that we are open once again to the invitation to
become more dedicated disciples of the Lord.
