NGA Rawene PANUI Community O TENewsletter ROOPU HUIHUI O RAWENE! 1 15 JANUARY 2015 RĀWENE COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER “Action over drift, engagement over withdrawal, deliberation and debate over silence and denial” Panui: STOP STATOIL Kauri Dieback Awareness Exhibition at No. 1 Parnell: Call for Entries HOKIANGA PROTEST FLOTILLA As part of the collaborative effort across regions to address the potentially devastating issue of kauri dieback, No.1 Parnell will be holding an exhibition and events, which will share the title of the national campaign, Keep Kauri Standing-‐Kia Toitu He Kauri. Kauri dieback is the deadly disease caused by Phytophthora taxon Agathis (or PTA). Kauri dieback is specific to New Zealand kauri and can kill trees of all ages. Nearly all infected kauri die. In the past 10 years, kauri dieback has killed thousands of kauri in New Zealand. We are inviting community members to participate in the exhibition, which will celebrate the majesty of kauri and its part in defining Aotearoa New Zealand’s national identity, and raise awareness of dieback and its impact on the environment. Keep Kauri Standing-‐Kia Toitu He Kauri will run from Saturday, March 7 – Wednesday, April 1. Painting, sculpture, installations and other art forms are welcomed, and we will also run a poster-‐painting work room throughout the exhibition. Together we can work to protect and save our beloved Kauri. For further information and/or an entry form, please contact Dawn Harris at No.1 Parnell, either 4057520 or [email protected]. Check out the Kauri Dieback website for more detailed information about the Kauri Dieback disease and other initiatives in Aotearoa. http://www.kauridieback.co.nz/ Lynn Lawton NEW YEAR’S GREETINGS FROM NO.1 From No. 1 Parnell we wish everyone a brilliant 2015 and we thank you sincerely for your interest in and support for No.1 as it developed over 2014. It has been brilliant to share in a lively Christmas season, with No. 1, Passion 8, Black Space Gallery and the Boat Shed Cafe on the Rawene side and Village Arts and the Koke Hotel in Kohukohu together bringing a creative buzz to the Hokianga. 2015 also sees Village Arts celebrate its 10th anniversary and we hope to become a part of this admirable history of serving the creative community. No. 1 has had a brilliant summer so far, with the Awhi-‐Embrace exhibition attracting many visitors and significant interest in the diversity of work exhibited. We have also enjoyed some excellent spontaneous performances in the space as people feel inspired to pick up the resident guitar or even bring in their own musical instrument. A huge part of No. 1’s success as a vibrant creative space has been our totally awesome Manager, Dawn Harris, who, with assistant Phil England and some trusty volunteers, has embodied the spirit of No. 1, of welcome, warmth, professionalism and responsiveness. Produced by Heritage New Zealand, the suite of six Northland app-‐based tours is available free to download, and is a must-‐have for visitors to Northland, as well as locals. Written and researched by former Heritage New Zealand staff member Stuart Park, with Professor Manuka Henare and his team at the University of Auckland School of Business providing a Maori cultural and historical perspective, the tours incorporate audio using actors Tui Ruwhiu and Michael Hurst. Sound effects also help bring the stories to life. Once downloaded the tours can be enjoyed anywhere – irrespective of whether there is wi-‐fi or a cellular connection – making them the perfect virtual tour guide. Feedback from people who have already enjoyed some of the app tours has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Bill Edwards, Northland Manager of Heritage New Zealand. “The tours make this incredible period of our history come alive, and tell these stories in an engaging and accessible way. Many of the stories centre around some of our fantastic Heritage Destinations in Northland, so people can actually visit places where many of these people lived, and events took place. “It’s fair to say that the app tours give people an opportunity to see history through new eyes,” he says. For a free download of the Path to Nationhood suite of Northland tours visit heritage.org.nz/apps or search for Heritage Trails through your online app store. 15 JANUARY 2015 Rawene Golf Club Gidday Golfers, Happy New Year 2015 golf readers & hackers!! As usual at this time the holidaymakers have left, the locals come out of hiding, some of us are just getting back to work and our Whanau have headed back to the city. At the Club – Opening Fun Day – Sunday 1st Feb 2015 at 10am. Starts with the Life Members opening ceremony, 9 Hole Ambrose haggle, Lunch & The 2014 Roll of Champions Presentation. Bring along Whanau & friends, golf gear available. So finally in a few short weeks we will begin the golf programme for 2015. Working Bees Every Sunday 10am followed by lunch and drinks. The Tees and Greens surroundings need to be done to begin with (who hits their golf balls off drains??) while the tractor does the fairways, YES WE DO NEED DRIVERS (not the club either) and the clubrooms need a summer clean. 10 New Year’s Resolutions I Have No Chance At Keeping 1. Buy more off Trade Me. 2. Lose some weight and drink less. 3. Try to figure out why I use Facebook. 4. Stop checking my phone for no reason. 5. Get fewer dents on my car and use the indicator. 6. Stop thinking others want to listen to my mobile’s music. 7. Find out what a selfie is. 8. Stop driving 100km thru Rawene to catch the ferry. 9. Hit a great score on the Rawene golf course. 10. Looking down at my mobile for directions instead of looking up at the signposts. 11. Actually watch My Kitchen Rules and The Block on TV & enjoy it. OK, so that’s 11 ... More fun next week … Happy Hacking, Dixon and Sophie Hokianga Sailing Trust Family Sailing this Wednesday. Meet at 12.30, High water is 6pm so no rush. Bring a spade and help spread the sand while waiting for more water ... special thanks to Opononi Lions for their contribution and to the Sailing Group Members who contributed time and effort. Some fine sand castles are already been built. The Sunday sailing was well supported, good to see the 470s being used keenly. We had a "Twice Round Rat Island" race, all the crews had to work hard on the beat back up the main channel. Lots of strong gusts and wind changes. Alex won the multiple capsize trophy, Steve and his crew, Charlie from Alaska, won the real race, Paul blew his chance by capsizing at the gybe mark. Reto was welcomed back, and did well to complete the course. After the race, we had fun planing on broad reaches across the harbour. Good to see Ben Wynyard and Liam Malpas making use of the Optis, Cairo and Rivaz Raharuhi also showed out, and it was great to see Tere Korewha on the river. Manaki Hauraki and Jerome Slade have been giving us a lot of help. How to get a sail boat up and planing ... sail across the wind, as a gust hits, sit well aft, hike out hard and heave in the mainsheet … hang onto your hat. After that pump the mainsheet and bounce across the waves. He would have loved to plant potatoes in his garden, but he is alone, old and weak. His son is in college in Paris, so the old man sends him an e-‐mail. He explains the problem: "Beloved son, I am very sad, because I can't plant potatoes in my garden. I am sure, if only you were here, you would help and dig up the garden for me. I love you, Your Father." The following day, the old man receives a response e-‐mail from his son: "Beloved Father, please don't touch the garden. It's there that I have hidden 'the THING'. I love you, too, Ahmed" At 4pm the US Army, The Marines, the FBI, the CIA and the Rangers visit the house of the old man, take the whole garden apart, search every inch, but can't find anything. Disappointed, they leave the house. A day later, the old man receives another e-‐mail from his son. "Beloved Father, I hope the garden is dug up by now and you can plant your potatoes. That's all I could do for you from here. I love you, Ahmed." FREE LOCAL CALL 09 9466550 KOURTZ Rawene HAIRDESIGN FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK FOR DAY-TO-DAY & MONTH-MONTH SPECIALS!!!
