Mr Carter has been appointed to the nine-‐ member Rules Reduction Taskforce by Local Government Minister Paula Bennett. The taskforce has been set up to get rid of what the Minister calls "loopy property rules and regulations that are stopping people from getting on with the job." The taskforce is asking people with ideas to make submissions and will begin holding meetings across the country next month. Mr Carter says he is honoured to be named a member of the taskforce, which will be co-‐ chaired by Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean and Auckland Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Michael Barnett. "I know there are lots of rules out there that are just plain frustrating and idiotic. Maybe at one time they served a purpose. But now they are out of date and serve only to increase costs and frustration without any public benefit." Mr Carter says some rules are necessary to ensure safety and quality of our housing stock. But others impose excessive and unnecessary costs, driving up the cost of homes. By identifying those rules, the taskforce can recommend to the Government how to cut building and development costs and thereby make housing more affordable for all New Zealanders. "I'd like to hear from Far North residents and businesses about their experiences. People can email me at [email protected] or write to me at the Far North District Council, Private Bag 752, Kaikohe 0440." More information about the taskforce can be found at www.facebook.com/ cutredtape.nz and on Twitter @CutRedTapeNZ. Go to www.govt.nz/ rulesreduction to make a submission.
