Year of Consecrated Life Consecrated life: many possibilities The Church is blessed with remarkable variety among the consecrated men in the U.S. In fact, there is so much diversity in the different kinds of communities, ministries, and characteristics of male religious that learning more about consecrated life for men can be overwhelming. We invite you to explore consecrated life in three ways: by learning more about consecrated men, discovering the different charisms in the Church, and by looking at some of the religious communities in the U.S. Go to www.yearforconsecratedlife.com for more information. You'll also find a short glossary that defines some of the key terms used to describe consecrated life. The theme of this year's Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is "Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink.'" (John 4:7). John 4:7 The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman invites us to try water from a different well and also to offer a little of our own. In diversity, we enrich each other. When Jesus says to her, “please give me a Week of Prayer for drink” it implies an Christian Unity ethical action that January 18-25 recognizes the need for one another in living out the Church’s mission. It compels us to change our attitude, to commit ourselves to seek unity in the midst of our diversity, through our openness to a variety of forms of prayer and Christian spirituality. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is a privileged moment for prayer, encounter and dialogue. It is an opportunity to recognize the richness and value that are present in the other, the different, and to ask God for the gift of unity. The traditional period in the northern hemisphere for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is January 18-25. Those dates were proposed in 1908 by Paul Wattson, Founder of the Society of the Atonement, to cover the original days of the feasts of the Chair of St. Peter (January 18) and the Conversion of St. Paul (January 25) , and therefore have a symbolic significance. November 30, 2014—February 7, 2016 Prayer for Christian Unity Heavenly Father, we come to you, the Font of Life, to ask that you fill your Church with Living Water to quench our thirst on the quest for Christian Unity. Let our hearts be filled with the gift of your Son’s love for us. May we find in your Church the living and abiding presence of your love and work together to bring about the desire of your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ when he prayed, “that all may be one.” May the Spirit never lay dormant within us, but sustain us on the path of life. This we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Communications from the Bishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The family around the world today faces tremendous challenges. In Latin America, where Christian values remain important, many families are wounded by hostility from the surrounding environment and by broken relationships within the family. Yet throughout the hemisphere, the Church continues to point the way to Christ as the source of hope and healing within the family and in society. Many family and catechetical ministry projects funded by the Collection for the Church in Latin America offer families and communities a way to strengthen, affirm, and celebrate their life together in faith, offering a different and hopeful vision of relationships with one another and with God. increased focus on family ministry, supporting ninety-eight communities with existing programs. Monthly, one-day meetings are held with the communities, which include workshops, interactive exercises, and best practices for family ministry. The project also promotes the Rosary and prepared people for both the National Day of Families held in May and the Annual Diocesan Gathering of Families held in June of 2014. In addition to the monthly meetings, a separate retreat was held for the facilitators of the groups that work with young couples. Our Diocese will take up this collection the weekend of January 24-25, 2015. Please be generous in this collection and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Thank you and God bless you. In Cuba, migration and economic pressures are only a few of the many internal and external circumstances that pose threats to Catholic families, as they strive to practice and share their faith. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon A grant requested by the Archdiocese of Havana is addressing Bishop of Joliet these challenges by forming family pastoral ministers who are helping nourish families, so they can live an authentic, integrated experience of faith at home and in the wider community. Through this project, the Archdiocese of Havana placed an THE 2015 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL IS UNDERWAY “EXTENDING GOD’S MERCY” The 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal begins with a mailing that many of our parishioners have received or will soon receive. This is a mailing from Bishop Conlon asking for a pledge to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. The Appeal not only funds many of the operations of the diocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Extending God’s Mercy.” The greatest act of God's Mercy toward humankind was to send His Son. People lost the way to God, the truth about God and a life in God by our own fault. Jesus came to give us the Way, the Truth and a new Life. Jesus taught us to be MERCIFUL as His Father is MERCIFUL. (Luke: 6:36) How do we acknowledge God’s mercy and show Him our gratitude? One way that we can show our gratitude is by giving back to God the gifts He shared with us. We can support our parish, our diocese and the Church throughout the world with gifts of time, talent and treasure. The gifts we give enable ministries, education, and services that touch thousands of lives. With your financial support, we can exceed our goal. When we exceed our goal in paid pledges, we will receive 65% of the amount over goal for use in our parish. Please answer Bishop Conlon’s request and make a generous pledge. All pledges can be paid in 10 installments. Thank you in advance for your support. www.stpiuslombard.org PAGE 10 COMMUNITY NEWS Serra Club Mass & Dinner Pro-Life Event Serra Club invites you to join them at St. Petronille The SERRA CLUB OF DUPAGE invites you to join them on Monday, January 19 at St Petronille Parish, 420 Glenwood, Glen Ellyn.
