Light Our Way
Lighthouse CD Spotlight
The Letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his
earliest writings, and are driven by his belief and the belief of
the entire early Christian community that the return of Christ
was imminent. Therefore, to devote time or attention to
anything else was foolish.
As time progressed, this fervor receded a bit. Today we
may wonder, when we hear these readings about the coming
end-times, if we should take them to heart. What should we do
when we hear that the day of the Lord will come upon us “like
a thief at night”? (1 Thessalonians 5:2) Does this mean we are
to stop our long-range goal-setting, get rid of our yearly
calendars and planners, or stop putting money in the college
education fund? Of course not. What it does mean is that we
need to change our lives, living like children of the light and
illuminating the world around us with the light of the gospel.
Then, on that day, when the details of our daily living become
unimportant, we will be ready to find our peace and security in
Christ Jesus.
To Hell and Back : Divine Love and the Cross
GET READY
Anne Marie Schmidt grew up in a very devout Catholic family
in Czechoslovakia. In this presentation, she shares her
incredible experiences of Divine Providence during the
infamous Nazi persecution at Auschwitz and on the Russian
battlefront. Anne Marie explains how her love for Christ grew
through her
astounding trials,
and how she was
led to see the hand
of God working in
them all.

Reflecting on God’s Word
Some things drop into our lives and we simply run with them.
Summer vacation was like that when I was a child. There was
no need and certainly no desire to organize it for the sake of
efficiency. Summer was better when it just happened: bike
riding and pick-up softball on the school playground behind our
house and swimming at Lakeside Park and going for ice cream
at dusk and catching fireflies at night and a thousand other
things that come together and make up summer.
There are other things, however, that drop into our lives but
never go anywhere, except perhaps with a lot of prodding.
School comes to mind. I never would have gone had I been
given a menu of options. Having my tonsils out was another
such thing, and wearing braces on my teeth, and moving into a
new city when I was eight, and my grandmother dying on my
twelfth birthday. I took them in stride, mostly because there
was no other way to take them. Given my druthers, though,
they never would have happened at all. I simply lived with
them, and then they were over.
The Gospel this week proposes that God comes in much
the same way. God gives us five talents’ worth of life or two
talents’ worth or even one talent’s worth, and with it enough
energy to double it. Sometimes, though, God drops in when
we’d rather be left alone, and so we try to bury God just
because the situation doesn’t look very life-giving to us. Yet it
can be life-giving, like the weary routine of raising children or
going to the same job we’ve been going to for the past
twenty-five years or taking care of an aging parent. Eventually
we may find out that burying such life is more deadly than the
risk of living it, and living it brings a higher yield than we
could ever expect.

Treasures From Our Tradition
All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of
the sick as essential to church life. In the West, the importance
of the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick
person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the Word.
Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the “Ritual of the
Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the
Word is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes
anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill
them.
Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries,
where it was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a
full and beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of
St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that
was instantly a pastoral hit everywhere. There were two lengthy
rituals for the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy
of anointing that included Communion under both species.
While this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to
see how monks who had the care of parishes desired to serve
their parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the
chanting of penitential psalms, and the second form required a
confession beforehand. Both forms included a laying on of
hands, which everyone understood as being an essential part of
penance.

P.A.D.S. Volunteers Needed
P.A.D.S. (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) has a new site in
Hinsdale and St. Pius X will provide for the 4th Friday of the
month from November 2014 through April 2015. We are also
responsible for Saturday breakfast.
This new site is a family only site and very different from our
past sites. The kitchen is small and clients stay in several
rooms. On October 24 and 25, the site provided shelter and
food for 10 homeless families of 16 adults and 23 children.
To assist in the upcoming months, the St. Pius X Community
needs either 2-3 families or 1 group to provide and serve
dinner and another 1 to 2 families or 1 group to provide and
serve breakfast.

St. Vincent de Paul News
The wonderful response we received due to the returned
Time & Talent cards and from Bob Frazee's talk after Masses
resulted in 22 people expressing interest in the Society and its
purpose of assisting the poor. We had one orientation meeting
and some new folks also attended our 10/25/2014 meeting.
Thanks to all who were moved to further the mission of
St. Vincent de Paul, the Society's founder, Frederick Ozanam
and Pope Francis' call to help all those in need.
50's Youth Group Night
On Monday, November 24 from 6:30-8 pm, the St. Pius X
middle and high school youth groups are having a 50's Night
bash. Girls can wear polka-dots and poodle skirts and guys can
slick back their hair and be greasers with white t-shirts and
jeans. There will be rock n' roll, root beer floats, a craft, and
games. This party is going to be so cool, it's giving me the
chills and they're multiplyin'.
Save Money and Support the Youth Ministry
As a fundraiser, the Youth Ministry will be selling Discount
Cards for $20 that can be used at 18 different establishments
around the Lombard area including Subway, Dairy Queen,
Culver's, and Papa John's. All discounts on the card can be used
multiple times until March 1, 2016. If you would like a
Discount Card, please contact the Youth Minister, Mark
Restaino, at [email protected].
Our food pantry is open to provide assistance three days each
week. The We Care/We Share weekend for the food pantry
occurs every 2nd Sunday of each month. However, donations of
food, paper goods, canned meals are always needed and greatly
appreciated. There is a list of needed items on the Food Pantry
door located in the Martha Room.
Distribution of Thanksgiving baskets is a usual November
activity for the Society and we have scheduled eleven such
deliveries this year. Thanks to all who contributed their time,
talent and treasure.
The Clothing Drive occurred the last weekend of September
and resulted in the truck being approximately 75% full. Thank
you to all who took the time to come by with their donations
and to the student and adult volunteers who helped make the
drive a success.
Thank you for all you continue to do.
2014 Christmas Giving Tree Project
Next weekend, the Giving Tree tags from several outreach agencies will be
available after Masses. The holiday season can be a very stressful time, but the
clients serviced by these agencies find this season difficult to handle both
financially and emotionally. By offering a little extra help, we all share in the
hope and unconditional love, which this beautiful Advent season should offer us.
Please take a tag on the weekend of November 22/23 and purchase a gift for that
person or child. Items listed are ONLY SUGGESTIONS. These families are
most appreciative of any gift they receive.
All gifts are to be returned GIFT WRAPPED unless otherwise indicated. The tag
identification must be attached (with tape) to the gift for proper distribution.
Please return the gifts to the tree area ON THESE WEEKENDS ONLY:
November 29/30 and December 6/7.
Your generosity will benefit the following:
Catholic Charities
York Township
Our Lady of Angels Home (retired Sisters of St. Francis)
DuPage County Convalescent Center
Serenity House (facility for those recovering from substance abuse)
Outreach House (helping low income families with young children)
Homebound Parishioners
Parish Families – several of our own St. Pius families in need of assistance
If you are interested in taking tags for an entire family or helping sort presents,
please contact Carol Weiland at 630-495-2647.
On behalf of all these agencies, THANK YOU.

DIOS NOS JUZGARÁ A CADA UNO SEGÚN
NUESTRA CAPACIDAD
1. Los dejó encargados de sus bienes; a cada cual según su
capacidad. La parábola de los talentos es bastante clara y fácil de
entender; lo importante es que cada uno de nosotros sepamos
aplicarla a nuestra propia vida. Todos hemos nacido con unas
cualidades y unas capacidades determinadas, después la vida nos
ha dado a cada uno unas posibilidades distintas para realizar
nuestras cualidades y nuestras capacidades.
Dios no quiere
vivamos siempre vigilantes y sobriamente. Así, cuando el Señor
nos llame nos encontrará dispuestos y preparados.

DEANERY AND DIOCESAN NEWS
Communication from the Bishop
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has come to the aid of communities nationwide for over 40 years in an
effort to eradicate poverty. During World Youth Day, July 25, 2013, Pope Francis told us to “never tire of working for a more just
world, marked by greater solidarity.” CCHD puts these words into action by funding housing, education, and the development of job
opportunities. Projects supported by CCHD move beyond providing for basic needs. They work to build healthy, sustainable futures
for communities. Ten years ago, Boston’s Haley House began offering bakery training at the request of a few regular guests at the
soup kitchen. Experiencing a tremendous demand, Haley House created a six-month course that includes customer relations and
basic business principles. Haley House currently has 70 trainees who have completed the program and are now employed in the
Boston area.
Haley House also runs cooking classes for at-risk teens and a Transitional Employment Program that provides holistic, individual
support to men and women re-entering the community after incarceration. Haley House creates a strong local economy by building
human relationships; it carries on Christ’s mission “to bring glad tidings to the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . sight to the blind, to let
the oppressed go free” (Lk 4:18).
This Collection is the primary source of funding for CCHD’s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Collection funds offer new
hope each year to those living in poverty throughout the United States. And remember, 25 percent of the Collection’s proceeds stays
here in our diocese to fight poverty in our communities and defend the dignity of our neighbors. Help us defend human dignity and
show Christ’s charity to those in need.

God bless you,
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon
