Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 18, 2015
Your body is a temple of the Holy
Spirit within you.
— 1 Corinthians 6:19a
Stewardship. . . A Spiritual Way of Life
Here I am Lord.
I come to do your will.
Here I am Lord is a popular hymn in many Catholic
churches. That hymn is based in part on our first reading
from the Book of Samuel. The Lord wants us to respond
just the way Samuel does. God calls each of us to discipleship through lives of Stewardship.
Like Samuel we, too, may fail to understand to what God
is calling us at times. Nevertheless, we should also respond “Here I am Lord.” That can be uncomfortable at
times. Eli instructs Samuel to respond “Speak Lord, for
your servant is listening.” Samuel does so and “the Lord
was with him.”
Our challenge is first to hear God’s call. It is there always,
but we must listen for it. Then we need to respond in
ways that show we recognize that the call is to service
and the call is for us to be disciples. The Lord is calling
Samuel by name. In the same way God calls each of us
by name. We need to hear. We need to respond, “Here I
am Lord. I come to do your will.”
Prayer is Vital to Stewardship
As we begin a new year it is a great time to begin a
renewed practice of Stewardship. Prayer is a good place
to start because it is all about your relationship with God
and His people and His Church. These prayer
suggestions can lift your relationship.
Eucharist (Mass) – every Sunday with renewed
emphasis on full and active participation.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
– every Wednesday
The Rosary – is prayed every Monday after daily Mass
and every Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
Mass Attendance—January 3/4, 2015

Pope Francis called for 2015 to be
the Year of Consecrated Life.
Each month during this year, we will focus on a particular saint who was a sister, brother or priest of a religious community or the founder of a religious community.
Also, in the universal prayers at Mass we will call upon
this saint to prayer with us.
Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life
O God, throughout the ages you have called women and
men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you
thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to
make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you.
Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons
and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price,
treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and
reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Facing Regret in Life.....
Polls have shown that between 35-65% of
people have some regrets. Think of regret as looking in
the rear-view mirror while you're trying to drive forward.
It's pretty hard to do. Regret is human and it serves many
purposes - warning, instruction, mobilization. What do
people regret?
- Education - the single most common regret!
- Work - many wish they had chosen a different
occupation.
- Marriage - regrets range from wishing one had married
earlier, later, or a different person.
- Family - if they had to do it over again, people say they
would try to get along better with parents, siblings or
children.
Regret is almost unavoidable, because we really don't
know what we want. The good news is that regret can be
transformed by working through it. Therapy can help us
figure out how to let go of feelings like regret. Treat each
day as a new day!

Priest Retirement Fund:
It is no surprise to learn that the rising cost of healthcare affecting families also affects the church. Many Priests who would
naturally retire at 70 are returning to ministry to care for us and
for our families. Like most organizations, we have a retirement
fund for our lay employees and a retirement fund for the Priests
of our Diocese. With the help of accountants and insurance
companies we regularly project what funding we will need to
cover the expected costs associated with the health care for the
retired Priests of the Diocese of Raleigh. As our population of
Priests get older, those commitments increase and as healthcare
has improved, we are living longer. Each of these factors increase the projected costs to cover our commitment to care for
our retired Priests. Currently there are 22 retired Diocese of
Raleigh Priests who combine for over 800 years of service.
Each year the annual drive for the Priest Retirement Fund generates this much needed funding here in our Diocese. Your generous annual donation to the Priest Retirement Fund helps us
meet our commitment to honor those who have served our families faithfully here in our communities.
Our Annual assessment:
$ 79,935
Donations received to date:
$ 16,591

Next week, we will take up the Collection
for the Church in Latin America. Your generosity to the Collection for the Church in
Latin America is invaluable to the future of
the faith in this region. Your donations will
fund catechesis, marriage and family life
programs, and seminarian formation.
Please give with the joyful and generous heart. Please
support programs like these and give generously in next
week’s collection.
Prayer for Solidarity
Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, we ask you to give us unity and
solidarity with the faithful in Latin America and the Caribbean. Grant us the grace to generously give our time,
money, and talents to those in need. May we learn from
the example of St. Juan Diego and share our faith in humility and love. We ask this through your son, Jesus
Christ. Amen
Groundbreaking for our new cathedral
January 3, 2015 was one of the most historic days in
the life of the Diocese of Raleigh. On that day, Bishop
Michael Burbidge celebrated the Groundbreaking and
Rite of Blessing ceremony on the site where Holy Name
of Jesus Cathedral will be built. Bishop Burbidge expresses his gratitude to all those who have supported
and prayed for this project and asks for your continued
remembrance of this great endeavor for our Diocese
among your intentions. To view photos and videos from
the event, and to learn more about our new Cathedral,

From the Bishop:
Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
Today, we begin the Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity. The theme for our prayer during the Week this year is “Jesus said to her:
‘Give me a drink’” (John 4:7). I ask you to
join me and Christians throughout the world, that we may
thirst for the unity for which Our Lord Jesus prays: “...that
all may be one… that the world may believe…” (John
17:21).
Our Holy Father, pope Francis, continues to encourage
dialogue among all Christians, that this prayer of Our
Lord Jesus may be brought to fruition throughout the
world. It is through such dialogue that greater understanding is gained. As Saint john Paul II suggested, understanding together with a shared work of the Gospel to assist those most in need, begins to heal divisions by expressing the unity which is at the heart of our common
faith.
May God continue to bless, watch over and guide us
always in this great endeavor, as we strive to pray with
one heart and voice in the Hose Holy Name of Jesus.
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Reverend Michael Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh
The Adult Literacy Program at Fayetteville Urban
Ministry is desperately in need of one-on-one volunteer
tutors. Many people are waiting for help with their reading,
writing, speaking and computer skills.
A tutor training class will be given on January 20, 22, 27
and 29th from 6 to 9 P.M. each night. All four classes must
be attended. They will need to work with a student 2
times a week for at least 2 hours each time.
If people would like to help, but cannot attend all of the
classes, they may attend the first class and then teach
computer skills or math.

World Day of the Sick
Pope John Paul II designated February 11, as World Day of the
Sick, “A special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s
suffering for the good of the Church, and of reminding us to see
in our sick brother and sister the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying, and rising, achieved the salvation of humankind.”
In keeping with this special day Saint Patrick
Catholic Church will celebrate the Sacrament of
Anointing of the Sick on Wednesday, February
11, 2015, during Mass at 11:00 AM. Saint Patrick
School will host a light luncheon following the
Mass.
Who may receive the Sacrament of Anointing?
Any baptized Catholic who is seriously ill due to
sickness, injury, or old age may receive the Anointing of the Sick, even though there is no apparent danger of death. The sacrament should be received when
the sick person is best able to profit from it, and not
be delayed until the person is at the point of death.
The elderly who are in a weakened condition are also
encouraged by the Church to receive the Sacrament
of Anointing, even though no dangerous illness is
present. One should also receive it before a serious
operation.
Please contact Beth O'Leary, Coordinator of Family
Life Ministry if you would like to attend by February
4, 2015 to ensure proper preparation of food and
seating arrangements.
