The Baptism of the Lord
From the Desk of the Pastor
Just a reminder, this Sunday, January 11th at 12:45 pm, is our next All Ages. Rhonie Butler will be with us to talk about
“Encountering Jesus Through Our Community.” Rhonie is a wonderful woman, whom I came to know at St. Bede, where
she was the Director of Social Ministry. She also held this position at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel a number of years ago. Please
consider attending. Also, there is a puppet show for our children in grades K-8.
Please note, there will be no Daily Mass this week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Also, the parish office is closed on
Monday, January 19th in observance of Martin Luther King Day.
This weekend, we conclude our Christmas Season celebrations. I did so on Christmas, but because I cannot say it
enough: thank you, again, to everyone for all your hard work to make our Christmas season such a beautiful and spiritfilled experience. To the staff, for their continued dedication and hours of service to our parish community. To the Arts
& Environment and Knights of Columbus, who helped decorate and beautify our church and parish. To the Eucharistic
Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, and Altar Servers, who put in many extra hours these last days with all the liturgies. And to our
Music Ministry, for continuing to lift our community in song and prayer! We have so much to be thankful for and proud of
at Immaculate Conception. As 2015 unfolds, may our parish continue to offer everyone who visits and worships with us the
opportunity to encounter and fall in love with Jesus.
Also, Fr. Dan Klem, the pastor of Sacred Heart in Norfolk, where Fr. French has been helping since this summer (he and
Fr. Dan are very close friends) was diagnosed with cancer this summer, which was discovered to be all throughout his body.
He has been undergoing extensive chemotherapy and treatments. Last week, Fr. Dan’s oncologist told him that he is “in total
remission.” While this is excellent news, he is soon to begin radiation therapy on his jaw, which is where they discovered a
tumor that lead to the more grave cancer diagnoses. I thank you all for your prayers for Fr. Dan, and please continue to keep
him in prayer during this next round of treatments! Thanks be to God that things are really looking good!

Haiti Dinner - Saturday, Feb 7
Come celebrate the rich and vibrant culture of
the island nation of Haiti with food, fun, and
dancing! We will also hear how we share our gifts
and talents with our Haitian brothers and sisters.

Our Sanctuary’s Current Icon
This religious icon depicts the nativity, or birth, of Christ. A
religious icon is a highly stylized painting that represents a
particular scene from the Bible. This icon is a good example of Catholic iconography, with various features representing well-known elements of the nativity story. In the Eastern
Orthodox Church, icons are called “windows into heaven,”
for through them we receive a vision of the spiritual world.
In this icon, notice the Virgin Mary resting and adoring
the newborn Holy Child. The magi bring gifts while angels watch from above and adore the newborn Christ. As
an angel announces the Nativity to the shepherds, midwives in the lower right bathe the Divine Infant. One
unique feature in this icon is the depiction in the lower left
of Saint Joseph pondering the mystery that is unfolding.

Faith Formation
Youth Confirmation - Jan 25 at 12:15 p.m.
Those youth and parents who will prepare for the Sacrament
of Confirmation are invited to attend an orientation
meeting on January 25 at 12:15 in the parish Library.
Please come to this very important meeting as we look to
the celebration of the Sacrament this Spring. Schedules
regarding classes and retreat as well as sponsor information
will be available at this orientation. In the Richmond
Diocese, youth in grade 10 and 15 years of age are eligible.
Adult Confirmation
If you are an adult who would like to be confirmed, please
contact Cass in the parish office. Classes begin this month.
Family of Faith Catechist Training - Jan 25 at 9:45 a.m.
Training for catechists of Pre-K through 8th grade
classes will be January 25 at 9:45am. There is no student
class this day. All catechists are expected to attend.
ICCU Theology 201 - Mondays at 7 p.m.
We are now studying of The History of Christianity in the
Reformation Era on Mondays at 7pm. This course will seek
a contextual understanding of each tradition, in both its
own terms and how it wzas affected by the others. The series
is taught by Brad S. Gregory, who is Associate Professor of
Early Modern History at the University of Notre Dame.
Lenten Retreat - Saturday, Feb 21
Robert Feduccia will lead a parishwide retreat
focusing on evangelization and the Lenten season.

Do you have a desire to build bridges with members of other faith communities here in Hampton? We have been invited
this Lent, to once again, join with others in our community, in the Hampton Citizens’ Unity Commission’s Diversity Circles.
In 2013, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and First Baptist Hampton were the first two churches to participate
in the City of Hampton’s inaugural Diversity Circles. Most of those who were a part of this historic event found it to be
transformative both in their spiritual and personal lives. This year the “Circles” have expanded to include members of
the Hindu and Muslim faith traditions. Over the six weeks of Lent, the groups will have the opportunity to meet at the
five different participating faith communities and collaborate on a project that will benefit the community of Hampton.
We are presently recruiting two people from our parish to serve as facilitators for the program here at ICC
as well as 20 participants. Coordination of the program will be done by the Hampton Unity Commission
office. Facilitators will only be responsible for communicating information regarding the Circles to the parish.

There will be two people from the five congregations in each group. The final number of groups will be determined by the
number of people who apply to participate.

have no idea of how blessed you are with consistently
good liturgical celebrations. I wish I had the energy to

Catholic Charities: Save the Date – Mardi Gras!
On Friday, February 6, 2015, Catholic Charities of Eastern
Virginia and Presenting Sponsor Bon Secours Virginia
Health System, will host a Mardi Gras Gala at the Westin
Town Center, Virginia Beach. Enjoy cocktails, dinner,
dancing to live music from the band Hotcakes, casino
tables and a live auction – all to benefit the programs
Catholic Charities provides to 6,400 local families each

Tidewater Catholic Alumni Club
The Tidewater Catholic Alumni Club will attend the
Norfolk Admirals Hockey Game at the Scope in Norfolk

Pilgrimage to Spain - April 13-22, 2015
Fr. Gregory Kandt, Pastor of Church of the Incarnation
in Charlottesville, is leading a pilgrimage to Spain for the
fifth centenary of the great Doctor of the Church, St. Teresa
of Avila. It will be during the Easter season of 2015, April
13-22. We will be going to holy places associated with St.
Teresa and St. John of the Cross, and Father Gregory will
lead you on a journey into deeper prayer and love of Christ
with the help of the teachings of these two great masters.
Among other places, we will visit Avila, Segovia, Toledo,
and Madrid. It will be a wonderful spiritual experience
and a great way to ponder the risen Christ among us!

Saint Mary Star of the Sea will hold an Admissions Open
