Thetruthisthatthroughourbaptism,wewereinitiatedintothePeopleofGod:thechurch.Wetookaplaceamong God’sholypeopleandwiththatrolecameresponsibilities.TheGreekword,“ekklesia”means“assembly”anditdenoteswhatthisbodyofGod’speopledo,theyassemble.Byassemblingwhatdowedo?AnotherGreekword “leitourgos”means“theworkofthepeople”anditisthewordfromwhich“liturgy”comes.Liturgytheniswhatwe assemblefor.However,liturgyisnottheworkofonepersonoranyonegroupofpeople.Itistheworkofallofus. Perhapsoneiscalledtoproclaimtheword,anothertoserveEucharist,anothertoleadusinsong.Allofushowever, arecalledtobeanactive,participatingpartoftheassembly.Whatevergifts,talentswehave,whateverourplacein thisfamilyis,theConstitutionontheSacredLiturgytellsusthat“allthefaithfulshouldbeledtothatfull,conscious andactiveparticipationinliturgicalcelebrations…” FullparticipationmeansthatwhenweparticipateintheEucharistwithallthatweareandallthatwebringonaparticularSunday,wedosowithourwholeperson,fullyattentive,awareanddeliberateinwhatistotakeplaceinthe Eucharist.Consciousparticipationcallsustobepresenttowhatistakingplace,togivenotonlyourattention,butour wholeselvestothecelebration.Thisdoesnotmeanforcedparticipation,itmeansbeingconsciousofwhoIamand whatIbringtoChrist,goodornotsogood,asIcometothiscelebration.Activeparticipationmeansweallowourselvestobeengagedbywhatistakingplaceandthatweenterintothecelebration,fullyintendingtotakeourplace andtoperformtherolesthatwehaveasbaptizedmembersofthisassembly.Icome,awareofmymood:frustrated withthekids,aggravatedbyaspouse,angryaboutanargumentfromearlierintheweek,sadfromalossexperienced. ItmeansthatIcomewiththedesiretoofferthoseareasofmylifetoGodandtohaveGodgivethemback,transformed withthepoweroftheSpirit.
