MyDearBrothersandSisters,
TodaywecelebratetheSecondSundayinOrdinaryTimewhichwilllastabout5weeks.During
thistimewewillhavetheEpiscopalVisitationofourBishopGeraldBarnes.Asanassembly,we
willcelebrateMasswithhim,sharemeals,andtellhimaboutourselves,ourministriesand
whatisonourmindswhenitcomestoourparish.
Thisgotmetothinkingwhatdowemeanbytheword“assembly”andwhat,ifanything,isour
roleinthis“assembly”?Askyourselfthisquestion,whenwegotoMass,whatroledowehave?
Wemaythinkthattheonlypeoplewhohaverolestoplayarethepriest,readers,altarservers,
ushers,choirandourEucharisticministers.Ifthatistrue,whatabouttherestofus?Arewe
spectators?Unfortunatelyformanyofus,thatishowweapproachtheroleoftheassembly,weareanaudiencejust
watchingothersperformingtheirtasks.Sometimeshowwetalkbetrayswhatwefeelourroleis.We“gotoMass”,
“attendMass”even“watchMass”.Wecallourpriestthe“celebrant”butdowetalkaboutourselvesgoingto
“celebrate”Mass?Bottomline,wesometimesthinkofourselvesaspassively“attending”Mass,andthatwehaveno
realroletoplayinthisliturgy.
Thetruthisthatthroughourbaptism,wewereinitiatedintothePeopleofGod:thechurch.Wetookaplaceamong
God’sholypeopleandwiththatrolecameresponsibilities.TheGreekword,“ekklesia”means“assembly”anditdenoteswhatthisbodyofGod’speopledo,theyassemble.Byassemblingwhatdowedo?AnotherGreekword
“leitourgos”means“theworkofthepeople”anditisthewordfromwhich“liturgy”comes.Liturgytheniswhatwe
assemblefor.However,liturgyisnottheworkofonepersonoranyonegroupofpeople.Itistheworkofallofus.
Perhapsoneiscalledtoproclaimtheword,anothertoserveEucharist,anothertoleadusinsong.Allofushowever,
arecalledtobeanactive,participatingpartoftheassembly.Whatevergifts,talentswehave,whateverourplacein
thisfamilyis,theConstitutionontheSacredLiturgytellsusthat“allthefaithfulshouldbeledtothatfull,conscious
andactiveparticipationinliturgicalcelebrations…”
FullparticipationmeansthatwhenweparticipateintheEucharistwithallthatweareandallthatwebringonaparticularSunday,wedosowithourwholeperson,fullyattentive,awareanddeliberateinwhatistotakeplaceinthe
Eucharist.Consciousparticipationcallsustobepresenttowhatistakingplace,togivenotonlyourattention,butour
wholeselvestothecelebration.Thisdoesnotmeanforcedparticipation,itmeansbeingconsciousofwhoIamand
whatIbringtoChrist,goodornotsogood,asIcometothiscelebration.Activeparticipationmeansweallowourselvestobeengagedbywhatistakingplaceandthatweenterintothecelebration,fullyintendingtotakeourplace
andtoperformtherolesthatwehaveasbaptizedmembersofthisassembly.Icome,awareofmymood:frustrated
withthekids,aggravatedbyaspouse,angryaboutanargumentfromearlierintheweek,sadfromalossexperienced.
ItmeansthatIcomewiththedesiretoofferthoseareasofmylifetoGodandtohaveGodgivethemback,transformed
withthepoweroftheSpirit.

John’sfaithinJesusisevident,soevidentthatJohn’sdisciples
immediatelyleavehissidetofollowthisJesus.
Thetwodisciplesmaketheirownactoffaith.TheyfollowJesus,
spendtimewithhim,andarequicktospreadthegoodnewsof
theirdiscovery:“WehavefoundtheMessiah.”
Itiseasytoforgetthattheexpectationsofgenerations,the
hopesofmanyagesoffaithfulpeoplewerebeingful illedinthese
simpleactsoffaith.TheLambofGod,theMessiah,foretoldbythe
prophets,had inallycome.NearlyeveryoneamongtheJewish
peoplewaswatchingfortheMessiahbackthen;whoinourown
societywatchesforsignsofthepresenceoftheMessiahtoday?
