Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills Monmouth Council BSA WWW.Monmouthbsa.org All Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters MUST be trained in IOLS to be registered as a leader in that position. Do you just help with the program and like camping, IOLS is for you. IOLS is required to be considered trained and wear the “Trained” patch. If you are a Webelos Leader or Webelos Assistant, IOLS will help you. This course gives adult leaders the practical knowledge they need to help Scouts to learn outdoor skills. The skills presented closely follow the Boy Scout Handbook and rank advancement requirements. The purpose of the course is to ensure that all leaders are familiar with the basic outdoor skills at the Tenderfoot through First Class levels, and to show them some proven teaching methods. The course will be organized as a troop with a maximum of six patrols of eight scouters each to ensure a hands-on, small-group experience. Staff Instructors will be assigned to each patrol to help as needed in camp set up, cooking of meals, map reading, compass use, rope work, woods tools, hiking and packing, nature, first aid, and Leave No Trace.
