Over the last three decades, this “titan of the

Hear live hit after hit when this country music maestro
brings a downsized, tightly tuned band into an epic evening
of down-home songs, welcome banter and funny anecdotes.
Black practices what he preaches in song and puts his own
life experiences in his show. He proclaims “love should be
a verb instead of a noun.” He is country to the core and
his humble gratitude to his fans shines through on stage.
And don’t be surprised if he gives his band a break and takes
a turn at drumming or showing off his meaty harmonica chops.

The first half of the program will feature each ensemble separately, while the second half will feature the newly
commissioned work, Passion for Bach and Coltrane.
Based upon the poety of A.B. Spellman from his book Things I Must Have Known, Imani Winds composer
Jeffrey Scott has created Passion for Bach and Coltrane, a work for wind quintet, string quartet, jazz trio and orator.
The seven-movement work, anchored by reimaginations of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Coltrane’s A Love Supreme,
explores the influence of spirituality on the art of these two masters and asks the inevitable question — what if
J.S. Bach and John Coltrane might chance to meet?
Imani Winds is one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the United States. This Grammy-nominated
quintet has carved out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant
programming, adventurous collaborations and inspirational outreach programs.
Harlem Quartet expresses boundless energy and contagious enthusiasm as it brings a fresh and upbeat attitude
to classical music, whether it’s traditional, modern or influenced by jazz. Their most recent recording, Hot House,
with jazz master Chick Corea and percussionist Gary Burton, was a 2013 multi-Grammy Award winner.

The beauty, heartache and humor of love
“In a musical world where

— Meurig Bowen, Director,
Cheltenham Music Festival
Love, in all its forms, has inspired human beings for
centuries, and it is brought to life through the immediacy
and resonance of the human voice.
The wonderful British ensemble Voice delivers a bouquet
of songs exploring the beauty, heartache and humor of
love just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Repertoire will range from the devotional songs of the
medieval German abbess Hildegard of Bingen to the
comedy and melancholy in ballads from Shakespeare’s
time. Traditional songs from the British Isles telling
stories both bitter and sweet, and Voice’s own
arrangements and commissions, will round out
the program.

Thank you for keeping the Arts in Education!
“Thank you very much for the invitation to the Chant
of Harlem performance. My students came away
with a greater appreciation for the artists who
thrived during that time period. Many were inspired
to read more about the Harlem Renaissance as a
result. After our visit, the students made journal
entries that spoke of their experience. Many now
have aspirations of being poets, dancers, musicians
and writers. This truly was inspirational for them.”
