17, 1932, in
Burlington, he
was the son
of George and Mildred Wagner
Keuhnle. On Jan. 8, 1955, he
married Mary Lomax Foggy in
New London. She died May 25,
2010.
Mr. Keuhnle began work as a
lineman for New London Phone
Co. in 1955. He worked 35 years
in the communication business,
retiring as district engineer for
Contel, where he supervised
the engineering projects and
personnel for eastern Iowa. He
was Contel’s Citizen of the Year
in 1977.
He graduated from New London High School.
He served in the Army during
the Korean War.
He was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church. He also
was a member of Mount Pleasant Masonic Lodge 8 A.F. and A.
M., where he served as worshipful master in 1972, and Country
Club on the River.
He served on the Mount
Pleasant City Council and on
Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club board.
He volunteered for several
years at Dover Museum in New
London and constructed several displays. He was the Dover
Museum Volunteer of the Year
in 2004.
He was a golfer, a fan of all
sports and supporter of the
Iowa Hawkeyes.
He enjoyed the outdoors,
hunting and fishing. He took
care of conservation projects on
the family farm. He also enjoyed
woodworking and eating out
with the ROMEO Club. He was
known as a great storyteller.
Survivors include two daughters, Kimn Hassenfritz and Lyndel Barton, both of Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one grandchild and his parents.
The celebration of life service with military rites for Mr.
Keuhnle will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Olson-Powell Memorial
Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with
Pastor Bryan Katchay officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to
7 p.m. before the service, and
family will receive friends from
5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials have been established for Henry County Friends
of Conservation and Dover
Museum in New London.

Born March 11, 1923, in Muscatine County, she was the daughter
of Edward D. and Mary A. Bartusch Oetken. On July 23, 1950,
she married Daniel Gerdes in Burlington. He died March 11, 2007.
Mrs. Gerdes was a homemaker
and worked in food service at North
Hill Elementary School for 18 years
and B.G.’s Buy and Bye for 11 years.
She was a member of Oak
Street Baptist Church, where she
served several years as trustee.
She also was a member of the Burlington Police Auxiliary.
She enjoyed gardening, jigsaw
puzzles and time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Carncross of West
Chicago, Ill.; three sons, LaVerne
Gerdes, Wayne Gerdes and Steve
Gerdes, all of Burlington; 10
grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Oetken of Burlington.
Besides her husband, she was
preceded in death by one infant
son, her parents and one sister.
Visitation will be from noon to
8 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel
in Burlington, where family will
receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jr. They divorced in 1976.
Ms. Cerven worked in retail,
did data entry and factory work
and worked for temp agencies in
Iowa City and Coralville. She last
worked at Michaels in Coralville
and retired for health reasons.
She attended school in Gorin,
Mo. She graduated from Gorin
High School and attended the
Upward Bound program in Kirksville, Mo. She also completed a
correspondence course in computer programs. She attended
Southeastern Community College
in Keokuk for two years and the
University of Iowa for four years.
She was proud of her children’s
scholastic accomplishments. She
enjoyed swimming with them
in the summer. She also enjoyed
buying gifts for and spending time
with her grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly Cerven of Bemidji,
Minn.; one son, Travis Cerven
of Park Rapids, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Jenifer Anderson of
Akley, Minn.; six grandchildren;
three stepgrandchildren; one
brother, Gary Creason of Kirksville; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by
her parents and grandparents.
The funeral for Ms. Cerven will
be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Vigen
Memorial Home in Keokuk, with
Pastor Dave Barrett officiating,
