THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME This week is National Catholic Schools Week - As we celebrate Catholic Schools, for us at St. Bernadette, I feel, it should also be a celebration of the Sisters of St. Joseph who have made this school what it is over the decades. Why do we need Catholic schools when we live in a time with many great school systems provide a great variety of opportunities? I would never deny these opportunities and the great education academically from public education. However, the ‘DIFFERENCE’ is that along with the academic education, Catholic Schools foster Faith and Service, teaching our young how to incorporate all three into their person. A few weeks ago, Pope Francis addressed the Vatican employees with 10 points for a New Year’s Resolution. I believe in my heart, that these 10 points are good for all people, and are what Catholic Education has to offer all. They are: : 1. “Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are.” 2. “Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention and love. 3. “Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faith into life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy.” 4. “Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly decadence.” 5. “Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, forgiving those who have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others.” 6. “Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion and with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord.” 7. “Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings that devour our interior peace and transform us into destroyed and destructive people.” 8. “Watch out for anger that can lead to vengeance; for laziness that leads to existential euthanasia; for pointing the finger at others, which leads to pride; and for complaining continually, which leads to desperation.” 9. “Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker … the elderly, the sick, the hungry, the homeless and strangers, because we will be judged on this.” 10. And for next Christmas - Make sure your Christmas is about Jesus, Consider abiding by these 10 points during 2015. Whether you have a student in Catholic Schools or not, you’ll have a healthier relationship with your family leading you and your loved ones into eternity in heaven. Pray for this tradition of Catholic Education in the midst of demanding costs and difficulties maintaining the schools. Please consider contributing to our monthly school fund allowing us to maintain our schools, and offer assistance to those who cannot afford it, while encouraging others to be educated by the Catholic School system. We are blessed to have Sr. Carol as our principal and a staff of teachers dedicated to providing our students a strong curriculum coupled with the teachings of both Faith and Service. If you have grade school children and are interested in seeing our school, I encourage you to come to this afternoon’s Open House between 1 – 3 PM. You are cordially invited to a Reception and Documentary Watch with Sr. Rosemary Nyirumbe - In the moving documentary, Sewing Hope, Sr. Rosemary Nyirumbe, who was named to Time’s “Top 100 Most Influential People of 2014” list, tells her courageous story of helping to rebuild the lives of young people traumatized by the civil war in Uganda. • Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at the Power Center Ballroom, Duquesne University • 5:30PM Doors open; • 6:00PM Introduction of Sr. Rosemary Nyirumbe followed by viewing of Sewing Hope • 7:15PM Reception • RSVP by January 28, 2015 by calling 412.396.6209 Attendees are asked to bring pop tabs with them to the event.
