Together by Paul Niemiec 18 January Family Service th 18 by January Family Service Together Paul Niemiec Jesus choose Team, perhaps we’d have chosen different?; a Together byaPaul Niemiec OUZEL VALLEY doubter, arguing brothers, one who denied him , some who were Together by Paul Niemiec OUZEL hardly worth the mention; well teams VALLEY are all different. OUZEL VALLEY We all owe the team here in OUZEL VALLEY - huge thanks. For example, my post was agreed to enable pioneer ministry and that has led to a seventh Church in the team. VALLEY In turn, the ongoing commitment OUZEL to that ministry by the fundingOUZEL from AllVALLEY Saints and the prayers, support and encouragement of everyone has enabled the continuing development. Added to the huge blessings from God and the hard work and commitment of all at Good Shepherd, we can all see how potent being together with God can be. Canon Grant and the Clergy team welcomed me in and we meet, pray, eat and chat together regularly, again, like the team that Jesus put together. This is just the kind of model of together we all need. The Church has various pictures associated with it; family, body, indeed the reality of “Church” itself, the people of God supporting each other. I was a goalkeeper [honestly!] in my younger days, as well as a second row at rugby, not at the same time, you understand. In each I had a designated role, ironically the one time I played outfield at Football I scored 4 Goals and the one time out of the scrum, a try. However I was soon back playing my part in our team. I, like others, made mistakes, we all do, but the best teams support each other, if I let in a “Soft” goal I’d get mouthful and then we’d all get on with it….Together. Teams change, grow, develop; something that doesn’t is probably dead. Likewise Churches, we may imagine, sometimes that little has changed over the years but look; new books, new people, sadly some old friends gone, new Clergy, new ways, the list goes on. Sometimes some changes are difficult to come to terms with, look at Jesus and the ways that both his team and others struggled to come to terms with some of both his words and his ways. A good friend reminded me the other day that it’s not about what an individual might see as best for them nor even a Church, rather how being God’s team is about the whole picture, that’s to say what Jesus calls “The Kingdom”. We are together part of the Kingdom team, followers of the true King. To help us God gives us both the example of Jesus and the empowering of His Holy Spirit. However it is still for us together to overcome our mistakes and differences, with His help. This means humility, often very difficult; at rugby we might be playing a different team but it often felt like it was our forwards against our backs, even before the match had started. In the Acts of the Apostles the early Church was highly noted by outsiders by the love that they had one for another; this was so attractive that thousands more joined. We as a team are welcoming new people to our Churches often and It’s a delight to see them stay and grow in faith. When I arrived here I knew no-one, Clergy and Laity alike showed me kindness and support and I could see the love of God in them. Canon Grant was, and is, very understanding of the flexibility that is needed in many pioneer settings, so much so that we are now sighted in the Diocese as a “Flagship” of how to do it. That could not have happened without team at the heart. What then, you may ask, has this to do with me? Well you too are part of THE OUZEL VALLEY TEAM MINISTRY, we all are. Yes, you are part of your Church, and thank you for all you do as part. We also have the opportunity to accept the realities of many recent changes and together make the best team we can. My experiences in 35+years of Church is that where people look at the bigger picture they experience bother a Bigger God and a bigger blessing. We can look at minutiae, wish things were “As they were” and get bogged down or like the early Church we can Show that we are Christians by our love”, which may involve some sacrifice; saying sorry; being flexible and, perhaps most of all, being as generous to others as Canon Grant, all the Clergy and ALL OF YOU have been to me since I joined “THE TEAM” here 3 ½ years ago. Let’s all play for the same team, the OUZEL VALLEY TEAM, let’s not fight or argue but rather let’s; help, support, encourage, forgive and enable. My Dad died a few years ago, he was fascinated the one of my Titles was “Enabler”, imagine if everyone in the team was an enabler, all helping all for the best for all, Jesus may have said it differently, but you and I both know , in our hearts, that’s what he longs for. It’s an honour to serve you in OUR team. And the odds of that happening are…? It was Saturday and my son, Adrian, and I were on our way to see a Chelsea football match. As the train filled up, a man sat down next to me. I paid no attention. But my son, sitting opposite, was curious to know why this stranger, in between studying his iphone, kept taking side-long glances at me. Eventually the man turned to me and asked ‘Are you Russell Stannard?’ I said that I was. He then showed me his iphone. It displayed the webpage one gets when Googling the name ‘Russell Stannard’. Google knows of only two Russell Stannards on the internet. Coincidentally the other one is in the same line of business as myself: university academic, maker of videos, writer of books. Indeed, in the past I have received a royalty cheque for a book I didn’t remember writing. The publisher had got hold of the wrong Russell Stannard (I hasten to say I returned the cheque to the publisher pointing out their mistake.) On this webpage there is a photo of me and one of my namesake. The man on the train pointed to the photo of me and said, ‘So that is you, right?’ I said yes. Whereupon, he pointed to other photo and said ‘And that is me. I’m the other Russell Stannard’. We were both flabbergasted. Google scours the world for Russell Stannards, but here we were, the only two, sitting next to each other! Not only that, but he got on the train at Harrow, and I used to live in Harrow. And he too was a Chelsea supporter on his way to the same match. Now what are the chances of all this happening? Needless to say, having established contact with my clone, we intend to keep in touch. It was clearly meant to be. Russell Stannard (one of them) From the Register R.I.P. Thank you for inviting us! It was an amazing day. Thank you for all the lovely things. I want to say thank you for the beautiful monkey and the lucky dip. From Vivien, Dear Mrs Birch Thank you very much for letting us into your beautiful Church and making us feel very welcome. I enjoyed it when Santa came and gave us the cosy monkey teddy (which I use to sleep with me). Particularly enjoyed the lucky dip and the present I got from it. Overall I enjoyed the singing, also I was interested in the story of the man whose daughter passed away at the age of sixteen. I really enjoyed it and I hope we can visit another time. Kaif and Elouise Dear Mrs Birch, Thank you so much for letting us come to your magnificent, fantastic church. I had an amazing time. My best part was when Santa Claus came and gave us that cute, adorable monkey and I loved it when we did that lucky dip! I still play with it now!! Thank you, Kind regards, Sarah and Rachel. From Stanton School, Milton Keynes. Sunday 18th January 10 am Family Eucharist Service Our second family service with the ‘moveable’ altar was held, with a few ‘tweaks’ following the service in November. This time the choir were in the front rows and as our Church organ is under repair we were regaled by the music from the electric organ played by Richard Watts. The younger children re-enacted a story from 1 Samuel 3;1 -10 well read by Reece and the voice of God was beautifully intoned by Fr Bernard with the help of the microphone. Audience participation is a must on these occasions, and we were finished by 11 am! Christmas Day in the trenches by Kate Crooks After the recent interest in the Christmas Day truce of 1914, I was fascinated to find a story in the Leighton Buzzard Observer (5 January 1915) concerning one of the men on the St Barnabas War Memorial, Reginald Cornish. The article quotes extensively from a letter received by Edward Kiteley of 1 Bassett Road from Private Cornish. At the time Cornish, a former draper’s apprentice and the son of a tailor was 19 and Kiteley, a printer, was 21. The letter was written on Boxing Day afternoon. Cornish describes his Christmas presents from the King and Queen and Princess Mary, mostly tobacco and cigarettes, and is pleased to have received several parcels from home. He says something of where he and his comrades in the Queen’s Westminster Riffles have been billeted and their movements in and out of the trenches. He goes on; “Next morning (Tuesday) we were up at 4 am and back in the trenches by 5 o’clock. Wednesday was fairly quiet and about 5 pm on Thursday our thoughts turned back to home and Christmas Eve, and we started singing a few carols. This seemed to cheer the Germans up, as they started singing back, and shouting to us “A Merry Christmas!” Not a shot was fired by them or by us all night, and it seemed as if the war had almost finished. Next day, Christmas Day, we had a short service in the trench, and after that we started going out halfway to meet the Germans. In less than half an hour we were busily talking to them, and found they were quite longing for the war to cease. They asked us not to fire all day, and they would not fire. In the meantime we exchanged cigarettes and tobacco, and I also managed to get several buttons and cap badges. Two Germans with whom I happened to get into conversation were quite decent class fellows, and a cut above the others. They were brothers in the 107th Saxons, and as reservists were called up in September. One had a ticket for London with him, and told us he was just coming to London for a holiday when he was called up. On leaving them, they handed us cigars and said they were personally very sorry indeed to have to fight against us. The rest of the regiment were of rather a lower class and looked as if a good feed would do them good. Taking them all round they were of medium age and rather well built. One fellow had an Iron Cross which he kept in his purse. Their “Jack boots” made us envious; they are just the things we want. After spending half an hour playing footer at the back of the trench, we strolled round looking for shell cases. We were not long coming across about a dozen, and several of our fellows found the time fuses as well. Some of the holes made by the shells were about four feet deep and at least ten feet in diameter. I do not know whether we should have started firing again tonight, but now that we are out of the trenches I do not worry about it. We may possibly be sent off to relieve some regiment tonight, but we are hoping to stop here for the night as our feet are dry, and we stand a good chance of getting some sleep.” The LBO mentions Rifleman Cornish again in March 1915 when he had “spent a few days at home to recover from wounds”. He was killed in action on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. 0 ST BARNABAS CHURCH JUMBLE SALE 7th March 2pm in Linslade Community Hall Admission 0p Enquiries Foulger & Childs Windows UPVC WINDOWS DOORS, PORCHES, FASCIA & SOFFITS & CONSERVATORIES A FAMILY CONCERN WITH NONE OF THE USUAL HARD SALES PATTER OR GIMMICK PROMOTIONS. 10 YEAR INSURANCE BACKED GUARANTEES FENSA REGISTERED COMPANY EST. 1990 LEIGHTON BUZZARD MARKET TUESDAY & SATURDAY.
